  1. My twin cam sounds a little like a traction engine on idle sort of a tut tut tut and when revved it runs on for a second or two which transfer into a couple loud backfires when you back out of the gas in 3rd gear. The throttle is not sticking, it returns to the idle position immediately. I used a syncrometer and have both carbs reading the same number. Any ideas?
  2. If you are in TO June 30 come to the monthly meeting. There's a good chance one of our new members will be present. He bought a Seven in the states and kept it there for 2 years until it became 15 years old then imported it. http://lotusclubcanada.ca/Public/Meetings.html
  3. I should mention too that my Seven gets driven hard at the odd autoX/slalom like the one last weekend where I probably did 20 hard runs. Still that live axle and Escort 4 speed gearbox performed well. Should also be mentioned that those 4 speed gb's provide a very fast and positive shift.
  4. When I was looking for my Seven I attended meetings at both the Toronto and Eastern Ontario Lotus Clubs in October and by mid April the following year one was sitting in my garage. Guys tend to sit on a car with the intention of maybe selling it but never really advertise it. Mine was only advertised in the club mag and I found another one that the guy was willing to sell if an offer came in. As for the live rear axle I have one and have mixed feelings. From a handling perspective I don't see DeDion cars getting away from me on corners but then there's the A frame bushings that require replacing every year. If you are going for mega HP then you probably don't want a 50 year old rear axle that was designed to go in a 50 hp saloon car. But unless you have specific reasons for wanting a DeDion rear end or a 5 over a 4 speed gearbox probably the more important point is the overall condition of a particular car. Mine has a live axle, a 4 speed gearbox and a Lotus twin cam engine none of which are necessarily everyones first choice but the deciding factor for me was the cars overall condition and the care that had been lavished on it by the previous owner for the last 20 odd years. Having said that they all have problems eventually and/or regularly but the one constant and guaranteed fact is the smile they put on your face every time you climb aboard.
  5. This weekend we had our charity NON timed auto slalom, no helmets etc. required. We take the public for runs around a parking lot course. What frightened me was watching video of passengers heads flopping from side to side especially through the actual slalom part. I noticed probably because I know whats coming my head stays relatively still whereas those of my passengers flop from side to side coming dangerously close to mine. It's that intimate Seven seating:)

  7. You are correct, most cars I've driven run out of oomph 500-800 RPM before redline and grabbing another gear before redline is faster. Not so the twin cam she pulls right up and through the redline if allowed, luckily I have an old rev limiting ignition rotor. I've only ever hit it a couple times but it is a reason I have not gone Pertronix as yet.
  8. Thanks for all the well wishes. Weather was great, good turnout cars, donors and the Seven lives on.
  9. Today's the day I push my luck and run my 50 year old twin cam to the limit. My favourite charity auto slalom event, I'll post photos later. With me luck! http://www.carcontrolschool.com/special-event-days/2014-james-fund-exotic-car-day/
  10. Wow she was typing even before the IBM Selectric (golfball) era.

    A fun event

Hosted by Ian Law who runs a racing school and writes for the Toronto Star Wheels section. Stay as long as you want and drive as hard as you want, in other words you don't have to kill your tires or car. I'll be there amongst all the high powered and high priced exotics and I'll have fun. http://www.carcontrolschool.com/special-event-days/2014-james-fund-exotic-car-day/
  12. The foam inside my Lynx Ram Flo air cleaners (Australian) is starting to show it's age. It appears to be just a regular open cell foam which is oiled. (I've been using the K&N cleaner and oil.) Is that correct, it's just open cell foam?
  13. Is it best done hot cold or does it matter? I'm going to change my plugs, clean the air filters and balance the carbs and I'm trying to decide in which order. Oh yes it's a twin cam so it's Aluminium or Aluminum. Also is it true NGK plugs do not require anti-sieze ?
  14. My old Lotus Twincam with 40DCOEs has the same problem. It's those gas guzzling Webers, gas evaporates from them I think from the jet inspection plate. I have a manual pump and if the car sits for more than a week I have to hit the tickler (manual primer) 4 or 5 times otherwise the poor old starter has to crank the motor for 30 seconds or more. I have checked and I am not leaking. I checked with the previous owner (22 years) and claims that's why he replaced the pump with an even older ticker style. I've lost count how many times I've ripped the hood off because the smell was so strong I thought I had a leak. I tell my wife if I could bottle that oil/gas smell guys would buy it.

    Spring Run

Last Sunday we had our Lotus Club spring run. Great weather, super route, nice break at The Butter Tart Shop, a pleasant lunch stop and no interference from our friends The Uniformed Tax Collectors. No break downs either, not bad for a 270 mile run. 4 cars from the Delorean Club and a lone Bricklin joined us. Next week we have a breakfast run and then the following week the charity exotic car day, chance to show off the Seven's sporty side and raise money for a kids cancer charity. Got to make full use of the short Canadian Blat season.
  16. Very clean looking example, don't think I've ever seen a wagon. Looks very similar to my 1000S except no olympic rings on the grill.
  17. The clear body is back on e-bay http://www.pbase.com/sarrana/image/155526073/large.jpg
  18. Caterham Cars and Redline Components, from Caterham I recieved my suspension bushings in 2 days and from Redline I received motor and tranny mounts in 4 days. If only I could install them as quickly:smash:
  19. Is there a great crimping tool made by anyone. One that crimps at the end of the tool rather than having to feed the wire through half way down the tool. Trying without much luck to crimp a new spade connector on a short wire down by the alternator.
  20. I should because my Seven is running so well something big must be about ready to break.
  21. As another poster mentioned you need an expansion chamber or preferably triple expansion chambers, at full song it's a sound to behold. From about 43 seconds.

    Horn relay

Anyone have a clue what horn relay would have been used on my 76 Caterham. Or what I can use to replace it? I think it's done blowed up.
  23. Castrol "R" used to be the pleasant smelling stuff. Memories … Brands Hatch and Castrol R
  24. I don't do it because I'm insightful but through the experience of a friend. He just took ownership of his new Spitfire, Saturday morning girlfriend wants to go shopping. Looking for a parking spot in a busy lot he thinks he sees one half way down but a guy is approaching from the other end. Foot hard down he beats the other guy and swings into the only empty spot ………. regain consciousness, looks up to see ambulance attendant, policeman and crowd of people. That one empty spot was occupied by a concrete lamp post. Two sore heads and one V shaped Spitfire bonnet later, lesson learned OUCH!
