is there a haynes type manual for a caterham
breezy7 replied to twobone's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Caterham makes the build guide and owners manual available in the technical section of their website. http://www.caterham.co.uk/assets/html/technical/download.html and an older version of the assembly guide is on the California Caterham club site http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com/resources/ Mike -
Glad you enjoyed the visit, Keith is a good guy, we have worked together for over 20 years. He does most of the sheet metal work on the aircraft we work on and was very interested in my car when I was building it. He loves to dive and would probably trade jobs with you in a minute ( from the pictures of your business most people would too). I think the pictures I sent with him were from the LOG in Indy 2 years ago. Did he mention he used to race a Triumph? It was a TR4 or a TR250. He also has a BMW R 75/5 motorcycle he bought new in Germany and rides it to work on a regular basis. Mike

Brad: I have a similar arrangment on my SVT that you are considering. I made a simple intake and bracket that mounts above the radiator to carry a few feet of ducting back to the air filter. It should be better than the stock setup but still must have alot of heat gain due to the mounting near the radiator and the normal underhood heat. I should try a scan gauge and see if it affects the intake temp. Have you considered putting a NACA duct in the hood? I have thought about it but haven't convinced my self to start cutting! It could feed the filter directly or a cold air box in the area vacated by your battery. Good idea about moving the filter to original battery location, I may have to do the same, never crossed my mind to do that. Mike

Just came back from the mailbox with the July issue of R&T. A quick test of the Superlight R500 in an article titled "Hail Britannia! ". They cover the Allard continuation and the Morgan Aero as well.

I just gone done with a bit of polishing on my Caterham. I use Nuvite polish and when I bought the latest jar I also got a bottle of their cleaner for polished metal. It is called Nuvite NuImage, and is designed to remove bugs and oil from polished metal and leave a film to make future cleanups easier. I can't vouch for that part of the claim yet but was impressed how it gets the last bit of polish out of all the stone nicks in the side body panels. Normally I end up rubbing like crazy to get the nicks cleaned up. It also made quick work of cleaning the crud off the rear fender stoneguards. It runs about $16 for a 16 ounce size. Here is a link if anyone is interested.http://www.nuvitechemical.com/Products.asp?ProductID=2 Mike

Stumbled across this site dedicated to the CSR, http://csr.informe.com/forum/index.php Anyone know how many CSRs came to the USA? I recall one at the LOG in Indianapolis ( a CSR 260 if I remember correctly) and none last year at LOG in Birmingham. Seems like they were very pricey in the States, a few options put them in the Porsche GT3 territory.

QUOTE=Mike Rohaley;38081]My center mirror is apparently a Spitfire/GT6 part. I was browsing a Victoria British catalog and recognized it (part #9-1816 $26.95 http://www.victoriabritish.com/icatalog/sg/full.aspx?Page=17). Mike, can you give me the dimensions of the mirror you are using? How tall it is and the size of the mounting base too please. Do you think it would work with a standard Caterham windshield? I have been looking for a smaller mirror since I replaced the windshield last summer and have not found anything I am happy with. Thanks Mike

I think the engine is a Zetec SVT judging by the intake manifold. That engine uses a plastic manifold and the 4 runners are visable over the right front fender. Didn't Car & Driver Magazine run a Caterham in this event a few years back? I seem to remember Nathan Down(ex Caterham Cars and Rocky Mountain Sports Cars )being involved with that race. Mike

Dean I was just on Ebay and there is Lotus horn button for $49. It didn't list a size or what it fits but might be worth a look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Lotus-New-Horn-Button_W0QQitemZ110459773107QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item19b7ea60b3. Mike

I recently bought a set of mirrors that fit the windscreen from Richard at Carbon-Bits in the UK. They are much better than the bike mirrors I had been using, no vibration and a slick mounting system. I was very happy with his service, seems like a good guy. If nothing else if you have not seen the carbon skinned Caterham he built go to his site to check it out.http://www.carbon-bits.com. Mike

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good tire pressure gauge, what I've been using seems to give widely variable readings.

I will go if the weather co-operates, the forecast is calling for rain and cool temps. Mike

Have you tried a search for power sockets on blatchat? Here is one that shows where Caterham installed one, http://www.su77on-se7ens.com/35479.html. A quick look at the wiring diagrams in my assembly guide doesn't show a power outlet. I'll bet there is not a standard location or wiring plan, the mechanic who installed it chose the location and wired it as he saw fit. I placed mine under the dash near the fuse box and wired it through a fuse to the positive terminal of the battery, this way I can use it to connect my battery charger when in the garage. If you do it this way be sure to use a grommet where the wire runs through the fire wall and leave off the illumination ring so you do not drain the battery. Mike -
A few I've collected over the years from Road & Track: July 1961: Lotus Seven America road test. List price was $2897 and a whopping 40 HP. Oct 1970: Lotus Super 7 Twincam road test. Nov. 1984: A Street-Fighter Racer. A look back at the Lotus Seven Jan. 2008: Lotus Seven Chronicles. Peter Egan reunites with his former 7 at LOG 27. Lotus & Caterham Seven Gold Portfolio 1957-1989 by Brookland Books. Over 50 articles covering mainly Lotus and Caterham but Westfield, DSK and Donkervoort as well. I've got a ton of articles covering Caterhams, but didn't want to make the list too long. Mike

Peter Egan's new " Side Glances " column is availble online. http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=26&article_id=8210&page_number=1 It is about his attempt to finish his Elan for LOG 29 as well as his trip to Birmingham and back home. Just a bit of 7 interest too. Mike

Drew, I have been trying to find a 3rd LED brake light similar to the one I saw on your car's rollbar in Birmingham but have had no luck. The one I have installed is a bit bulky. Can you give the source where you bought it and a part number? Thanks, Mike

Thanks Brad. I read your post about using a 180 degree thermostat giving you a power increase. What type of increase in power have you seen with the lower temperature thermostat? Do you notice the engine temp gauge reading lower? Does there seem to be any downside with the new thermostat ? Mike

I'm going to put a new thermostat in my SVT engine and wondering if anyone has a torque value for the thermostat housing. Any recommendations for a Ford Focus repair manual that covers the SVT engine? Mike

Taber: does the Mirrorforsevens eliminate the need for mirrors on the side screens or windshield mounted mirrors? How wide is your field of vision, can you see both sides of the car as well as directly behind ? I recently replaced the windshield on my Caterham and am not happy with any of the mirrors I've found to install on the new windshield. I always hated the standard Caterham windshield mirror because of its size, plus it has lots of vibration. I purchased a small mirror on Ebay but the head adjusts just a few degrees and I can only see the carpet on the rear bulkhead. I have mirrors installed on the windshield stanchion but they cut in half the amount the doors will open making entry and exit harder. Mike

Tows like a dream, glad I opted for the Caterham towing package. It does fill up the rear view mirrors pretty good. Mike

The attendance prize was pretty nice, thanks John, seems like there was some talk of increasing club dues to cover the cost. Maybe we can get Bass Pro Shop onboard as a sponser. Mike

Thanks for your efforts John. Mike

Will there be a sign or a flyer with the USA7s event schedule (times and meeting place) posted at the Wynfrey hotel ? Does my LOG registration cover entry into Sundays NASA racing or is that an additional ticket? See ya Thursday, Mike

My Caterham windshield has 3 cracks eminating from a fan shape on the passenger side and they are getting bigger so I am going to have to repair or replace it. I plan on trying a few auto glass dealers hoping that it can be fixed but if not will have to bite the bullet for a new one. I don't have any experience with glass repair, does it work OK? I'm sure it depends on the type of damage being fixed. Since it is on the passenger side and not a big area that is damaged as long as the glass quits cracking I will be satisfied. If it was in my field of vision or in a more noticable spot I would be more concered with the repair being perfect. I have checked Rocky Mountain's parts cataloge and they have a few options so will talk with them as well as the insurance company. Mike
