Your overall favorite engine for a Lotus 7 variant.
scannon replied to Ruadhd2's topic in General Tech
My Caterham SV has a Miata engine and transmission. AFAIK it is the only Caterham with a Miata engine. I've driven FM's Westfield when it had a normally aspirated 1.6 Miata engine and was very impressed with the performance. I used a 2000 Miata 1.8 engine and transmission in my car. The transmission required removal of about 8 lb of aluminum to make it fit in the Caterham tunnel. Wiring was a challenge because I used an aftermarket Link standalone ECU, a year later converting it to the Hydra Nemesis ECU. http://www.britishv8.org/Other/SkipCannon/SkipCannon-BA.jpg The engine has a Garrett 2560 turbo, intercooler and 550cc RC injectors, otherwise it is completely stock. The latest dyno on it was 301 RWHP and 264 lb ft of torque. It is as easy to drive as a Miata until you go WOT. At that point you had better be pointing straight down the road, one hand on the steering wheel and one on the shifter as you have about 2 seconds in first gear before you shift at 7k rpm. A number of passengers have sworn the front wheels come about 4" off the pavement on the shift to second. I can't verify that because I'm too busy steering and shifting to watch the wheels. Build info is at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/636168/1992-mazda-miata-mx-5/page-10 Pictures of the finished car are at the link in my sig line. -

Wish I had known he was in the area, I would have set up another Colorado Sevens Gathering to celebrate his new car. Mike: if you can contact Ron and he is still in the area, please have him call me. 303.661.9914 -

On the advice of a good friend, I pulled almost all of my money out of my IRA mutual funds and put it into an IRA cash account about 10 days ago. I'm really happy to be standing on the sidelines for a change. Now I just have to figure out when to jump back in. Any suggestions? I have to keep it invested through the IRA to prevent paying taxes on it until I need to withdraw it.

Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess, "Will you marry me?" The Princess said, "NO !!!" And so the Prince lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and banged thin long-legged big-titted broads and hunted and fished and raced cars and went to naked bars and dated women half his age and drank whiskey, beer and Captain Morgan and never heard bitching and never paid child support or alimony and banged cheerleaders and kept his house and guns and ate spam and potato chips and beans and blew enormous farts and never got cheated on while he was at work and all his friends and family thought he was cool as hell and he had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and lived happily ever after.............. The end.

The increase in gas mileage is due to lower pumping losses at higher altitudes. The throttle is open wider for a given speed which provides less restriction in the pumping process. The internal combustion engine is just a big air compressor with a little fuel added to produce power.

Love that white frame. I'm looking forward to hearing about its performance with the LS3 engine.

I've had several dents successfully removed from the aluminum skin of my Caterham by the PRD guy. He was also able to remove a large number of hail dents from the aluminum hood of my Miata. I'm guessing your PDR guy can get most of yours out except perhaps the really pointy ones which he can make less noticeable but not disappear.

I get the sound track but just pretty patterns when I play the teaser. It comes up using Windows Media Player and .avi is one of the types selected and supposed to play on it. Any ideas?

Tom and I made it into Grand Junction at 8 PM. None of the roads go straight from Red Lodge to Grand Junction so it took 13 hours to get here. About 1.5 hours of that was spent stopped at construction sites or for lunch. I think we did about 700 miles. I left early Red Lodge at 7:04 AM and despite a long delay at the construction site at the top of the Beartooth Highway I made it to the Chief Joseph Highway Junction in 61 minutes. I had only five cars/trucks to pass and had a glorious trip over the top. There were only three cars to pass on the Chief Joseph Highway and total time from Red Lodge to the end of Chief Joseph highway was one hour and forty two minutes. Tom took the truck and trailer (of shame) over the short, non mountainous route and we met and put the Miata in the trailer and headed South for Grand Junction. We saw a lot of very desolate terrain as we traversed Montana, Wyoming and into Colorado where things got much greener and prettier. Tomorrow AM we have an appointment at Flyin Miata to test drive the LS2 powered Miata with about 480 HP. Then it is on to Erie, about a 4.5 hour drive on I-70. It has been a fantastic trip, probably the best road trip I have been on. Thanks to Rosie and Gert for planning and setting it up, I'm looking forward to the next one and bringing along the Caterham instead of the Miata.

Thanks Bob, I was hoping there would be a chance to sample a number of Sevens on this trip.

I think they would look great.

Warranty was 50 feet or 50 seconds, which ever came first. I had a conversation with the builder, he is going to fix it but on my nickel. The inconel studs cost $19 each!!!!
