  1. Paul, I have a new Caterham speedometer. It is electronic rather than mechanical. You can run it off a hall effect sensor on a wheel or driveshaft.
  2. No key? Does it have a proximity fob or can anyone just jump in, fire it up and drive away? If so, what is your new address?
  3. I called Ben at Caterham USA to see if he knew anything about all this. Their answering machine said they are closed while on spring break until April 29th. I wonder if the dealers and/or importers got summoned to the factory to hear the news.
  4. Put me down for backup if the sale to pksurveyor falls through.
  5. OK, I'll let you know as soon as I win the lotto.
  6. Drool all over the keyboard. Thanks for the link. Now all I need is GBP 80k. Oh well, I can dream (and buy a lotto ticket).
  7. I'm up for this if the date stays Oct 21 - 23. I plan on going to LOG 31 in Las Vegas the previous weekend and then heading east to Texas, then back to Colorado. # of days interested in driving: 3 but flexible # of people attending: 2 Trailering in: yes Alaskossie and I are planning on sharing Caterham and truck/trailer driving for this one.
  8. The new Kit Car Builder magazine came yesterday. There is a nice article on the V8 Stalkers from Brunton Auto. At the end they state that you can buy a turnkey LS1 Stalker for $36k. That seems like a great bargain. The chassis will fit all of the LSx engines so for a bit more you can theoretically have up to 511 ci and 2,500 HP. They are also looking into making chassis for other brands of V8s.
  9. Terry, Is this an all LSIS inclusive event or just for Lotus and Caterham 7s? I've heard that the last time the lads came over from across the pond it was Lotus and Caterham only.
  10. For the ignition, could it be as simple as changing the plug wires so the wrong coil fires the right spark plug?
  11. Toll booths are no problem. I watched a woman in a RHD original Mini approach a toll booth, pull a hand brake turn, back up to the toll taker, pay her toll, accelerate out backwards and do another 180 turn and drive off. All very smooth and controlled.
  12. Next time it happens, put a hand on the coil pack and see if it is very hot. Also check the MSD box for heat.

  14. Are you running the Ford Focus ignition coils? I've heard that they are infamous for things like this.

  16. I've been a gearhead all my life and have worked on cars since I was 15 so it really wasn't difficult, just time consuming. I didn't set a schedule for completion and would walk away when tired or frustrated. I did spend about 80 hours on the wiring since the Link ECU and Miata engine had nothing in common with the ECU wiring that came in the kit. I removed a complete wiring harness from a Miata, stripped off the tape and identified each connector and labeled it. Then I removed all the excess wires and connectors, shortened the remainder to fit in the chassis and set about merging it into the car's wiring. It still amazes me that the engine started on the first attempt. In the middle of all this, myasthenia gravis hit my eyes and I had to stop the project for six months while the docs got that under control. I had eyelids I couldn't keep open and when they were I had double vision which made it impossible to read the wiring diagrams and work with the wires. It eventually affected my diaphragm which is why I have to carry supplemental oxygen with me 24/7.
  17. Thanks Mondo, I appreciate the kind words. When I get asked what's under the bonnet and I tell them its a Miata engine and transmission I often get some strange looks. I wait a bit then mention the turbo, horsepower and weight of the car and their attitudes noticeably change.
  18. A big improvement over the stock exhaust.
  19. That was my thought as I watched the clip. How can this be such a popular show? BTW, I don't think those are the Evora's engine sounds they are using. I've driven one on the track at full chat and it wasn't nearly that nice.
  20. From Desperate Housewives: YouTube - Lotus Evora on Desperate Housewives Disclaimer: I have never watched this show, the link to this clip came in an email.
  21. I did it relatively cheaply. I bought a wrecked Miata from the salvage auction for $1,800. It had a little over 18k miles on it. I parted it out, kept the engine and transmission and few other items then sold off the parts. I recovered my investment, had a free engine and transmission and around $1,500 pure profit which went into the car. This worked out so well I bought another Miata and did the same thing. I now have an engine and transmission sitting in the shop for use if one or the other should fail. I bought a used Link ECU for $450 which came with a set of 550cc RC injectors. I bought a new turbo for my Miata and moved the old one to the Caterham. A turbo manifold from FM cost about $400. The intercooler cost about $300 and I fabricated the plumbing from exhaust tubing and Samco hoses. The only other major expense was a little over $1,000 for a custom built stainless steel exhaust system. The nitty gritty details are here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/636168/1992-mazda-miata-mx-5/page-10 The finished product is in the link in the sig line below I did 95% of the work myself farming out the exhaust, motor mounts and machine work on the transmission. If you want to talk about it, PM me your phone number and a good time to reach you.

  23. They are called passing mirrors. None for sale popped up on Google where I found the picture but I would think some place like Moss Motors would have them. Just checked eBay and found three of them: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=passing+mirror&_sacat=See-All-Categories If you think your Seven attracts attention now just wait until you mount one of those. The questions you get asked will multiply.
  24. That works and although it is fun it draws too much attention. There are no obvious external stops on the suspension, its like they just didn't machine enough teeth into the rack gear. Ben at Caterham USA didn't have a solution for me, I was hoping someone else might have figured it out. I have been thinking about putting in a Miata power steering rack and pinion with a hopefully larger number of teeth on the rack.
