Exactly. By noting the raw material sourcing issues you surface an additional concern - the environmental costs of electric cars at end of their life are monumental compared with regular internal combustion engined cars being scrapped at the end of their life. Life cycle thinking has not been considered in the push for electric cars.

This is the same British government that took 5 years to eff up a Brexit that is destroying the British economy. The time since 1/1/2021 has seen the largest drop in UK economic activity in something like 300 years. There is no chance that is going to happen by 2030. People forget that you have to charge an electric car. So you have to build infrastructure to do it - not just at rest stops but at people's homes or other centralized facilities. A gas station relies on fast throughput of customers to make the facility work. Will that work for a charging facility where charging takes time? In the utility space there is already a tectonic shift going on to move from coal fired powerplants to gas/renewables (wind/solar/tidal/etc) and that just replacing existing capacity and not expanding capacity exponentially to accommodate the demand need. It can take over a decade to build a gas fired power station. It can take 2 decades to build a nuclear power plant. It takes years to plan out wind farms and solar farms. Even then the NIMBY brigade don't want these anywhere near them so it can be challenging to find a location acceptable that passes environmental impact tests. Companies will only invest in infrastructure if there is a return on investment and their timelines to build plants are far slower than the governments. Then you need to work out the payment model. Currently, a lot of the city/rest stop charging is free to the consumer. It is paid for in taxes or in the purchase price of a Tesla (in the case of their superchargers). Once users start to get charged for charging their cars then lack of convenience/time to charge/cost complaints will surface. Electricity is also subject to pricing issues - the spot price for power exceeded $1 per kw yesterday in Texas. To put that in perspective, charging an electric car to capacity just cost $100. How many consumers will want to pay that to charge a car after the premium they paid for an electric car? Anyway, has no one realized that the vehicle exhaust emissions on an electric vehicle are still being emitted? They are being emitted at some power station which (for the most part) is not as clean for emissions as individual vehicles. Ok the proportion of renewables electricity generation is growing but is relatively expensive generating technology compared with the alternatives. So it is easy to make grand sweeping statements but its a lot harder to execute and a lot lot harder to make the financial economics work. Electric vehicles will have a place but there will be gasoline vehicles around for as long as I am alive. Caterham's biggest issue is the evolving safety landscape in that exceptions for kit cars will be harder to gain for registration. In the last 10 years, the window has been tightening in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan. In another 10 years I expect they will be restricted to their home market for road going vehicles and will be track day toys elsewhere.

LOL - The FB Marketplace is not the easiest thing to share items from! What about this link? Its in Groton CT https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/351910812657116/ Its the only classified ad site that I know of that gives you feather boa ads when you are searching for a Caterham. Hate to think what they would give you if you were looking for a Stalker? -
A proposal for a new HPDE event in SC is coming together. Please review this post linked below and post your interest in that thread. Proposal for a new 2021 Sevens HPDE in SC - Gauging interest (usa7s.net)

Many of you have followed the very successful annual Sevens HPDE event held at NJMP for the last 10 years - if you have not then here is a refresher from last year. Photos - 2020 Annual Sevens Event at NJMP (usa7s.net) An opportunity has arisen to have a separate event in late 2021 at Carolina Motorsports Park. Steve (Merlin on this forum) and Maureen have moved from their home at NJMP to the Camden SC area and in true enthusiast form have made friendly with the track management at Carolina Motorsports Park about hosting a USA7s event there. This would be additional to the existing annual NJMP event which is in the process of having dates negotiated by Tom (Thank you to Tom!). Carolina Motorsports Park Carolina Motorsports Park is a 2.3 mile circuit, freshly paved in 2020 under new ownership and management. It has a nicely challenging layout and is popular with enthusiasts. Their website is linked here: Carolina Motorsports Park – Road Racing Center Of The Carolinas Location CMP is located in Kershaw SC https://g.page/CarolinaMotorsportsParkLLC?share The closest town for accommodation is Camden SC, about 20-30 mins away where a new Hampton Inn is located along with dining options. The track has a concession stand with usual pit food options during the day. Travel distances to CMP: 1.5 hours from Charlotte NC 3.5 hours from Atlanta GA 5 hours from Jacksonville FL 7 hours from DC 8 hours from Cinncinnati OH 12 hours from El Dorado AR For those coming from the NE and not interested in towing a car for a day, I would likely arrange for a truck with 6 spaces to leave from TK Autosports at NJMP in Millville NJ - you could drop off in advance along with what kit/extra tires you need to support yourself. A few of us did this last year with a trip to VIR which worked out well and we would do it again. The cars would be dropped off at the on-site mechanics workshop at CMP where they would be secure until our arrival. The truck would then pick them up from there the day after the event and bring them back to TK Autosports (or my NJMP garage for secure indoor storage until you can get there to pick up your car. Event Format Event format is still open as we are exploring a standalone rental running open pit lane (usual pass on straight only point by rules) plus a day with the Turn 1 Club operated by CMP (analogous to NJMP Drivers Club) where we would get a dedicated session for sevens. They have karting so the traditional race could take place so that someone's young teen son or daughter can win again. Minimum length would be 2 days on track but for those hard core track rats we could discuss options for extending another day. Cost is likely at or less than the $300 per day HPDE fee that we have at the current NJMP event. No profit is made on these events by either USA7s or myself - it is done for the enjoyment of a club event. Estimate hotel at $120 per night. It will not be expensive fine dining but usual sports bar type of dining places. Timing Given the weather in SC, we would look for a November or even December event. Plan on 70 degree days and good sunshine. The purpose of this post is to gauge interest in such an event so that we can work out if we have the numbers to make it financially viable. If you are genuinely interested please post below. If you are uncertain but intrigued please say so as this makes a difference as to how we count numbers. Thanks mike

Rather clumsily, John lost the password to BessieTheSeven so she will not return. Good to see you have a soft spot for Bessie. Not sure I would describe her as "unwoke". She was empowered and won awards for the most gratuitous use of swear words and innuendo on a car forum. :jester: But Les Suave is still out there, usually surfacing with Shane.

Arch still makes the CSR chassis as Caterham cannot do that one in house. Arch can also make replacement chassis if you were unfortunate enough to write yours off as they have the original jigs. -

Much of custom suspension bits are either AP Racing or Titan. Dry sump bits are Titan. Regular front brakes are Triumph Spitfire. Vented Brakes are AP Racing. Rear stop/indicator/reversing lights came off a 1950-60s era UK caravan/RV. Engines: - Ford Cortina UK was sold in the US in the mid to late 1960s as an import - Lotus Twin Cam - sold in various Lotus cars in the US - Ford Crossflow - used in the Mercury Capri - Rover K Series - we were fortunate not to get Rover cars with this engine here as they were undisguised turds - Vauxhall VX engine - sold here are a marine engine. Makes sense as it was as heavy as a boat anchor - Ford Zetec - Installed in Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique, Ford Focus - Ford Duratec 2L - Installed in Ford Focus - Ford Duratec 2.3L - Installed in Ford Ranger Gearbox - Ford T-9 was in the Mercury Merkur XR4i - Ford 4 speed box from Ford Cortina was used in Caterhams and Lotus S3/S2 cars prior to the T-9 becoming available. -

Right now it’s 2 hours drive away from me but I should be heading there late next week if you can wait until then?

You have an MBE 9A4 ECU. The YD prefix to YD8083 tells me it is Cosworth supplied to Caterham. You have coil on plug Duratec I assume? 2L or 2.3L? I have not got my Caterham anywhere close to me but I suspect it is the same ECU code as mine since mine was supplied by Cosworth along with the engine. The options you have available to you seem to be (in no order of preference): 1) Ring Caterham parts and see if they can source a Caterham CSR260 tach here: Tachometer - CSR - Black (caterhamparts.co.uk) The CSR260 was a Cosworth 2.3L Duratec with a Cosworth supplied tune. Coil on plug so 4 coils. The tach for a CSR260 "should" work but you need to check that with Caterham parts - I have no way of verifying. I would also ask the follow up question to them - what other Caterham models used a 4 coil on 4 plug 2L(?) Duratec set up? I suspect an EU4 model tach may work but thats just gut feel based on those models being coil on plug. If an EU4 does work then you will need to also buy the new style connector and update the engine loom connector as these changed from EU3 to EU4 as seen here on this part: Tachometer - 2015 on - Caterham Parts 2) Ring Nisonger http://www.nisonger.com They are the US agents for Caerbont gauges. Explain that you have a Caerbont gauge out of a Caterham designed for a 2 coil set up but you have a coil on plug/4 coil set up and do they know how to source a replacement that would work. It may end up being a non-matching replacement. You may need to ring Caerbont directly in the UK if Nisonger cannot help. They should be able to help on new connectors if you need them. 3) Source an aftermarket tach here in the US. It was a standard size (80mm from recollection) so there should be something available. Look at Racetech brand - fairly close look. Sorry not a precise answer but hopefully it gets you closer to an end solution.

Nice - I like that spec. Such a fun driving car - it encourages you to hang the tail out - not that I need encouragement. Sad that CARB gets in the way. Its bad enough to import one to the USA and dealing with the Federal import but to do it again into CA is just too much. I'd love to move to CA for a bunch of reasons plus I would save on taxes coming out of NJ but the CARB/DMV bureaucracy is a killer to my existing little collection of cars.
-
Can I clarify please? Do you have a Cosworth ECU like a Motec? Or do you have the Caterham MBE ECU that was installed on the Caterham CSR260 Cosworth Duratec? Depending on the answer then it may be as simple as just installing the correct Caterham tach or another brand of tach. The Caterham Tachs are made by Caerbont

Holy hell! how did you buy an e-golf for $12K? Thats a deal and a half. I thought they were $30k after rebates? Difficult choice - 2002 or Mk1 Escort? The Escort is the better handler but depends on the engine you get with it. Whats your ideal spec?
