Gee Bob, you should see what Kitcat is like on track! :jester: -
Sorry, may have confused things. The ECU will require the input but you can get low rise sensors and side mounts. My current 2.3L Caterham has a side mount connection off the cam cover.

Thats a great find - enjoyed watching that. I was lucky enough to see a Lotus 18 in a workshop this week. Sadly I am too big to get into it but I happily drooled all over it. Walter Cronkite looks like he is a surprisingly good driver - never heard of that side of him.

I was visiting Seattle for a project and stopped by to see Bruce at Beachman Racing. This Caterham build got sidetracked for many reasons this year - Bruce in solitary confinement, me in solitary confinement, other distractions, me focusing on other cars, phases of the moon and time of the month, etc. So we spent a good afternoon rolling through the various items needing decisions or in some cases, research to work out a solution - dashboard layout, paddle shifter equipment layout, ECU sensors, missing rear suspension bits from Caterham, etc. The 4 wheel sensors for wheel slip are the next challenge (traction control, launch control, antilock, etc). The engine is done and first pass dyno for 327hp. Full mapping with correct ECU and wide band will likely put it closer to 335hp+. Close inspection of the engine photo by keen eyed forum members will note the Ford sticker showing 2L displacement. This came from the crate engine donor - the block is now a 2.5L. Anyway, I think a new cam cover is needed to remove the high mount electrical connection from the rear top of the existing cam cover to give clearance under the bonnet.

Its the feet. Its always the feet that matter. In an S3, big feet are the problem. Anything over a size 9, maybe 10 is likely to have an issue. You can tweak pedal spacing and small racing booties to sort of make it work but that S3 pedal box is small. Height can be accommodated in an S3 - pedal adjustment, reposition seat mount tracks back an inch, change the seat, etc. I have seen a 6'3" person happy in an S3 Weight is somewhat dependent on a body shape, but I am 250lbs and can fit in an S3 with the regular leather seats. Snug it is. Muffin top look definitely. But I fit. Still cannot drive as I have size 12s wide. If you fit in a regular coach airline seat width then you should fit an S3. There are a few S3 owners down MD way - CarlB, RCollum, Jim (FE07) and others who are escaping me right now. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of any SV owners on here in that location. You may have to come north to PA, just the other side of DE border or to mine at Millville, NJ. Not sure what owners are comfortable with these days with Covid - you would have to check.

Personally, I think this is brilliant. You have have to go for it. Will also teach an old dog new tricks to stay competitive. :seeya:

Hi Ollie - Welcome to the forum. That car definitely has not surfaced on here since it was sold as it would have likely turned up in the classifieds repostings each week.

Well done for snapping up that good deal! Welcome to the forum! There are a number of fellow owners around CT if you are looking for backroad blatting buddies - Paul (Wemtd), Jay (Black Hole), Seb. Bruce (11Budlite) is building a Caterham and will be ready for next year. As an ex-CT resident, I know there are some fantastic driving roads in the state. -
I did a write up to clarify importation rules in a past post #13 at this link: http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?10365-1999-Birkin-S3-(Last-5-of-build)&p=93662#post93662 Federal government deals with importation into the USA. States deal with registration and titling. You could import a new kit or roller kit with a Manufacturers Certificate of Origin (MCO) but the engines and gearboxes cannot be installed in the car and it is unwise to ship them in the same container as the kit/roller. You are not going to Federalize an under 25 year old Caterham that is being imported on a fully assembled basis. Thats airbags, bumpers, crash testing, etc. People have tried to go to Caterham UK and buy direct and then ship to the US but have generally not been successful. Caterham have spent time and effort establishing a dealer network and preserving the rights of those dealers to be exclusive within their country of operation. You might be able to get your kit but not get your MCO. The MCO is essential for getting a title and registration in nearly every state where a car is being titled for the first time, particularly on a car which does not have the usual VIN data plate showing Federal compliance. Sure there are ways around this (picking the state, bonded titling, etc) but its a narrow path. You could thread a need through this and get the car you want but it will take time and effort. I would try another Caterham dealer for getting a price on a 620R, as one has already offered above. I know with the low pound to dollar conversion rate, it will be less than $100K although if you are undisciplined with the option list you will reach that number quickly. You will not have immediate gratification as you will have to wait a while but thats the price of paying less.

I wish they did that lap again in the dry with some grip. Would have liked to see what a real time would have been.

It genuinely did as the roller kit when it came out of the factory. However, once you add an engine, diff, prop shaft,...oh and maybe a gearbox.... -

Sorry but I won't be searching Facebook Marketplace regularly for this listings page. Cannot link outside the FB universe. The search engine is brain dead - where else can you search for a car and turn up cat t-shirts, a feather boa, snowmobiles or a Caterpilar D9 bulldozer but not a car. It also only has a range of 500 miles which makes it a bear to automate a search script for the entire country. I used to think Craigslist was a challenge. I am surprised sellers can sell anything other than by pure luck on FaceBook Marketplace. -

Week beginning December 6, 2020 Based on some feedback this week, I want to state that a listing here does not constitute a recommendation from me or USA7s. Always do your due diligence, first on both the car and seller, before buying. A quick google will always tell you a lot about a selling dealer. I have no financial or legal interest in anything posted here. NEW Caterham and Champion - Facebook Marketplace. Browse the linked page to find them. That Caterham is a bargain if it stacks up. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/105756796124329/search?category_id=vehicles&query=Caterham The Champion from Facebook Marketplace is also listed separately here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-Lotus-Seven/184566363199?hash=item2af903343f:g:5f8AAOSwuDBfyrJM Westfield pre-lit https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/lotus/super-seven/2424257.html Lotus 7 S1 https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/lotus/7/2450326.html and here https://www.wirewheel.com/inventory/available/1957-lotus-7-series-1/ Westfield https://greenville.craigslist.org/cto/d/simpsonville-westfield-se-lotus/7239875025.html Birkin https://pensacola.craigslist.org/cto/d/cantonment-1992-birkin-super-s3/7241215761.html REPEATS Lotus 7 S2 https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/lotus/super-seven/2409828.html Stalker https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/lotus/7/2167534.html Caterham https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/lotus/caterham/2416012.html Locost https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1382221/1979-lotus-seven-for-sale-in-arvada-colorado-80005 Wharton 7 https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1299993/1978-lotus-seven-for-sale-in-cadillac-michigan-49601 Stalker http://www.race-cars.com/carsales/lotus/1437589044/1437589044ss.htm Birkin https://www.wirewheel.com/inventory/available/2015-birkin-s3-for-sale/ Lotus 7 S2 https://thesmiekelcollection.com/1967-lotus-super-seven/ Caterham http://www.beachmanracing.com/inventory Caterham http://rockymountaincaterham.com/inventory/ Mitusoka Zero https://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-Mitsuoka-Zero1-Roadster/373377543132?hash=item56ef092bdc:g:ISMAAOSwCaBff3wu and here https://www.duncanimports.com/vehicles/547/1994-mitsuoka-zero1-roadster Lotus 7 S4 project https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/d/hereford-lotus-s4-seven-project-car/7232085841.html Diva 7 https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/d/prescott-diva-roadster-1962-lotus/7232431342.html CANADA Deman SR20DET https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/city-of-toronto/2013-lotus-seven-deman-sr-sr20det-turbo-like-caterham/1536286420 Project chassis https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/chatham-kent/lotus-7/1532626254 -
Forget GoPro. Their products are expensive and you have to buy all their special proprietary peripherals to make the package work. Absolute bear to get external mic and live power feature working in a car. Yi camera is highly regarded. Lots of people have been positive on that one. Sony action cameras are really susceptible to rolling shutter effects in a car - no idea why but I love them otherwise. Great quality. I am using a Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 and find it easy to use and intuitive. GoPro level pricing but I prefer it. It does overlays and GPS stuff. The app to put it all together is very easy - even numpty me can turn one out. External mic is a bit goofy - you need a bulky attachment but it all works well. Sample with external mic: Overlays are all done by the camera sensors then processed via the Garmin editing software to be overlaid. Quite easy to do. It handles dark/light contrast quite well in the following video. This one is using the regular internal mic - not external - so you hear the wind noise more. DJI Osmo Action is highly rated these days. I have one as my second camera and find it easy to use. Reasonable price. Easy enough to edit. No overlays or sexy stuff like that. Easy for external mic. Editing software is useless - use something else than the DJI stuff. A comparison of the DJI footage quality in 3 different settings is here at post 49 http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?8791-Getting-decent-video-audio-on-your-Seven&p=113548#post113548

Link did not work but I went hunting and found it. Looks like you cannot link it - have to be a FB registered user and logged into FB Marketplace. Try this link to see it plus some others I found. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/105756796124329/search?category_id=vehicles&query=Caterham That Caterham is a great find. Good value at $22K. -
Hmmm...red car? Off the ground? Well airborne? Its Xcarguy jumping his old red Stalker again! :jester: Cue the appearance of Shane in three.....two.....one....

Thats exactly why I mentioned it. It will vary by state. No insurance experience is consistent state to state although companies try to make it seem that way. For 97% of cases it will be the same.
-
Hagerty here. Used to be with Grundy but they changed their policy wordings. Other agencies to check (it will depend on the state - insurance is regulated on a state basis not Federal) are American Collectors, Heacock, JC Taylor, and Lockton. Insurers who offer collector car insurance direct are Chubb and Farmers. I work in the insurance business. The High Performance Driving experience requirement comes from Hagerty taking some losses on ineptly driven performance cars - Cobra replicas and 60s/70s muscle cars that go but do not stop or handle. They want to know you can handle a high performance car. Not sure on TX insurance regs but I don't think they can deny you coverage but they can certainly up the premium for perceived risk factors. The usual way insurers deny insurance coverage is just make the premium so high the customer goes elsewhere to a cheaper insurance carrier. Hagerty also now offer HPDE days so I would not be surprised if you get some marketing materials later, although you will definitely not be insured on a HPDE track day with your standard road insurance policy - you have to buy the supplemental track day coverage for that. One educational thing - Hagerty, Grundy, Collectors, Lockton, etc. are not insurance companies. They are known in the trade as managing general agents. They rely on a state regulated insurance company behind the scenes to actually issue the insurance policy. Hagerty et al are just marketing fronts somewhat independent of the insurer. Different states will have different insurers behind the scenes. In PA, NJ and I think MD, Hagerty uses the Philadelphia Co. for the actual dirty business of issuing a policy and paying your claim. Not sure who Hagerty uses in TX as the insurer behind the scenes? The insurer will work with Hagerty to set the underwriting criteria - so the high performance driving experience requirement is not required by Hagerty in all states.

I loved the 5.8L Cleveland v8 - fantastic engine. Great styling on the Pantera in their original guise, before all the wings and flares.
