2023 USA7s HPDE at NJMP Lightning - CHANGED TO October 14 and 15

I agree with Tom. Gentle break in in green group and assess progress on the day. Sign up at the track for Sunday if you think you are in a good spot. -
On-track incident - Help with damage assessment
Croc replied to KnifeySpoony's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Bummer - thats really annoying. Feeling sorry for you and hoping you and your passenger were unscathed other than being shaken up. I think you got away lucky - that could have been so much worse. Particularly boneheaded by the BMW too - he was target fixated on the white shitbox and not track aware. Assuming he was a racer (given that it was a race car) he should have been aware that you were behind and then alongside but I bet you were below his field of vision (window sill height) because of your low height. That said, it is always the responsibility of the passing car to complete the pass on track safely. This is a major reason I am cautious in a se7en around bigger cars on track - they don't always look, they cannot see and they are bigger than me so I will be beaten up worse. I bet the conversation in the pits afterwards was interesting. Who was the track day organizer? The safe answer is disassemble and reassemble that corner. The damage could be hidden and you will not know until you pull it apart. Something is obviously off for your alignment to be off. I'd check the wheel balance too as you may have lost a wheel weight. Check the steering rack has not moved/shifted. Its really unlikely to have damaged the rack but its feasible its moved somehow. My suspicion is a bent control arm - subtle so not obvious on the car or some bushing damage on a joint. The alternative is assume its ok, realign and off you go out on track again only for it to break out there while at speed. Frustrating I know but is it worth taking the risk when the driver in your car is the air bag (I mean that in the nicest way of course!). -
The problem with importing that Caterham is that it is not yet 25 years old although someone managed it as there is one in the south. David Saville-Peck is sadly no longer with us as he would have been able to do a kit version of that cycle engine caterham. A number of manufacturers have done bike engined cars over the years - Caterham Blackbird, Westfield Hayabusa - although they are no longer current. For for current makers - you have found XCS. But also MK Indy is out there: https://www.mksportscars.com/models/mk-indy-model.html They used to have a USA dealer although not sure who that is or how to get in contact? There is a USA7s member with a bike-engined Locost amongst other things. Calling @spitfun to the discussion as a voice of experience. Deman had a mixed reputation - some loved them some hated them. The problem with bike engined cars is you are using a small lightweight engine to propel something that is a magnitude of weight higher. Thats not a great equation for reliability on the transmissions.

2023 USA7s HPDE at NJMP Lightning - CHANGED TO October 14 and 15
Croc replied to Croc's topic in National Events
No chance. I am distracted and then I distracted Bruce with an October trip to Spa with 4 days on track. It will be finished in October - not sure what year. -
Yes although I struggled with that target given the inconsistency of the traffic on track that day.
-
Spent a day at Brands Hatch on the GP circuit last Thursday with a fresh set of ZZRs in the 333 compound. Like them. Similar to the A24 compound - so much so I really could not tell the difference and had to check the side wall. Lovely 4 wheel rotation from pit straight through paddock - really good for confidence everywhere. Loads of grip through Hawthorn, Wesfield and Sheene - really good turn in on full throttle. One bit of news I heard - Avon will no longer be supplying the Caterham UK race series next year and all race teams are expecting supply will disappear for a time as a result of production transition. I will buy and store and extra set(s) of the ZZR (either A24 or 333) as my dry tire. If the ZZS disappears then I will shift to a set of Toyos for the wet. The Toyos are definitely a lot slower (and heavier) than the ZZR and about the same as the ZZS. All the teams are scrambling for options, I am just going to buy a year or two by storing some sets. By then a suitable alternative will have been sorted out by the various race teams and I can start using that or Avon will be back to supplying.

Older 1980s Caterhams had it that way. It is easier to fill the car as the neck up and out the rear basket seen on later cars does tend to present filling issues. Gives you more luggage room in the boot too as the fuel filler neck is not present. I guess this was the "classic" spec kit as its quite a late model year to seen with this feature? Vent seems to be just a breather hole in the fuel cap? Fixable as you say. -

Hi Bob Welcome to USA7s. Good to hear about for your passion for Fejer 7s and interesting to read your blog on your personal journey with the car. USA7s does have a library of various se7en documentation here https://usa7s.net/ips/files/ ...but nothing in there is on Fejers. I can create a section for them if you want me to store a back up library of documentation for you? They don't come up for sale much in Canada and I have never see one in the USA. One popped up for sale last week remarkably https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/edmonton/lotus-7-replica-by-fejer-bros/1671680916 Cheers mike

Didn't think I was being political, just bemoaning the lack of qualified mechanics skilled to work on specialty cars outside of the regular dealer network. I don't mind them being paid a lot - they deserve it given some of the oil leaks my money pits can produce. Any last humorous digs at Bruce about his daughter's wedding costs before we return to chatting about the other cars that are not se7ens that we all own?
-
Its not just Georgia - same for WA, CO, MI, NJ, VT, and MA. The traditional training path for mechanics via the auto dealer networks no longer exists as most mechanical service on new cars today is plug into a computer, take off old component and put on new component. Consequently, the dealer mechanics are barely equipped to jerk off, let alone truly diagnose an issue on a car. Plus the young millenials who work in dealer service shops have no desire to go into specialty mechanics for high-end Bruce toys as it is too much hard work. Most of my projects ended up on the slow burner for the same reason. Not much I can do other than be patient. I have enormous sympathy for the business owners who are juggling a world of pain right now. My relationship with them is all good so they are upfront and honest with me, so I give patience in return. One CO business I use is going to classic road rallys and shows and offering $250K+ plus relocation reimbursement to any experienced mechanic he finds. Once guys realize there is good money to be had then the labor supply issue will be solved. Cost issue for Bruce in the meantime as he pays a six figure number for his daughter's wedding. Does your daughter need help picking an expensive wedding venue? I could curate a very high quality wine list for the event that I know she would love. Daddy is worth squillions so it should not hurt too much. Just want to help you know.

No, its not that in mine and the two others I am aware of. Mine was clean. No, not that either in any of the three cars I am personally aware of. Bolt is snug. It was regularly torqued and paint marked as part of my maintenance schedule. I think this is getting close. Engineer analysis on my failed part shows poor cast material, some minor corrosion (not visible to naked eye inspection) and metal fatigue at fail point. 1/4 inch would not be sufficient with this fact pattern. Would like to do a full NHTSA analysis but there is no need for my purposes. Paraphrasing the engineer who did the analysis, fix the materials and prevent corrosion, then the fatigue may never have happened. I think your idea of liner has merit but I would not reduce the wall thickness. I suspect this part may get more loading under actual use than Multimatic (the original designers) CAD modeled back in 1998-99. I would love to see the results of the modeling. I attached the original design summary. The upgraded part from Team Leos has not failed in racing conditions potentially showing that using quality materials with the same part design works. Croc replied to rider's topic in General Sevens Discussion
@rider PM sent with contact details. Dont worry about RHD. Bit of concentrating and it will get all natural pretty quickly. I assume you would have a regular rental car in the UK. Excess luggage stays in there out of sight while the car can stay at the rental agency. You would likely only rent for 1-2 days anyway. -

Oh and to add. I never go super firm with a Caterham as 1) I find the weight transfer helpful for maximizing grip given the lightweight nature of our cars and 2) if it is damp or raining, you want a softer suspension anyway and no one wants to be faffing around changing things from dry to wet. Its all a compromise - focusing on the sweet spot is the best answer.
-
Do you want to set it up exclusively as a track suspension or do you want a mildly sporting upgrade from say a 310S spec to say 310R or maybe more meaty with a 310R track spec? Trying to gauge your degree of upgrade you are aiming at. A mild upgrade needn;t be spring/shocks. You could always switch out the rubber/metalastic suspension bushings for poly bushings. Powerflex USA in PA sell them - use the search bar to find Caterham bits as they do not list it as a maker. Just makes everything a little crisper for track or road. They last a hell of a lot longer than any bushing supplied by Caterham if you give them their annual attention. https://www.powerflexusa.com/shop?search=caterham My suggestion would be an " R " type of upgrade with the poly bushings. Good for track but not too extreme so you can still use it on the road when you have opportunity to plus no need to change back. I find I get about 15 years out of my Caterham shocks. There is usually a US maker who will refurb the shocks at the correct valve spec (if you know it). For example, Meteor sell Penske shocks - you can have those serviced here. Some will have to go back to maker in the UK - my CSR Multimatics will have to be rebuilt back there. Bilsteins, Konis, mass market stuff sold here can be serviced here - plenty of places offer the service option. More specialist shocks can be done by some boutique places - I have a contact in Phoenix who does it for my other cars. You just need to know the right valving for your lightweight car. That will be something Meteor usually keep secret but you should try to get the spec when you purchase so you can avoid having to send back in the future.

Definitely that is the way to go. I have not been to the Caterham factory in about 10 years - even going to the showroom is very helpful to sort through the options. They are moving it so visits may be offlimits for quite a few months. The guy you want to make contact with is David Ridley, Caterham's Chief Commercial Officer. Really nice guy. Caterham are slowly expanding on their Experience offerings https://caterhamcars.com/en/experiences/overview A Caterham test drive is usually a brief affair and I bet they will not allow it with a non-UK license. They did not for me. I would seriously consider renting a Caterham while you are there. Plenty of good options, although maybe not the exact model you want. You want some good amount of time to go off and get lost on backroads. https://www.williamsautomobiles.com/caterham/hire/ https://www.sevenhire.com/ https://www.caterhamgatwick.com/hire-a-seven/ https://www.highlandcaterhamhire.com/ I have used Highland Caterham for some past explorations. They accept USA licences. Overdue to do it again. Trust me, you will learn how to use the weather gear, very quickly.... The Ariel Atom factory is worth a visit although it will not be as large as you will be expecting. If you want a contact for Ariel Atoms, then I have a US dealer contact - he owes me a favor since he has one of my cars presently. @JohnCh We may be needing thread separation here... -

Importing a 2022 Caterham 7 from Canada to the US

I think you will find NY State accommodating to a new Caterham. Lots get through the process without issue. Vlad had issues more because of the past title year label from a prior state than it being a bad car. Starting the title from kit is a different exercise. The NY State Caterham dealer will have all the info you need. I definitely don't think you will need to find another state. Are you in the NY metro area like me? -
I have a bundle of these on the work bench - the old broken plus some new milled replacements for future spares since this now looks to be turning into a consumable for track cars. The original failure on the outside surface of the ear (not the side) seems to be poor casting/raw material, then corrosion, into which the inevitable metal fatigue sets in. The failure crack seems to be mostly from the outside to the in from what I have seen in the Blatchat threads, offline photos and the various CSR email chains I am a part of. As you rightly point out, it definitely needs lube on assembly as the there is movement through the suspension articulation.

Annual Gathering of Sevens; And, a Request!

I'm not going to make excuses as I have experienced it all myself as a multi-decade owner. When I was thinking of my 2010 CSR I went to visit Caterham UK as there was no one in the USA with the experience on that model. The problem with Caterham, or most of the Se7en dealers in the USA market, is that this is not their full time job. The sales flow is so small, that any dealership is a side-bar to their main business. Caterham order books are so delayed that some dealers cannot even fulfill the orders so customers walk. How does a dealer keep a business running when they are lucky to get 10 cars a year shipped by Caterham? Also the dealers are all sole individual types of workshops where they are run off their feet with work. Email/Vmail/Call responsiveness can only go so far in that situation - they run out of time in the day to get back to people. There are a lot of false interest inquiries with these cars. People think they want one and then they realize the intensity of the experience and the commitment needed to enjoy. A Se7en is a lot more hard core than a Porsche with an ownership experience model from the 1930s and should not be compared to each other. I will be curious to see if Donkervoort will fix that by asking a quarter of a million dollars for a se7en. As for aftersales, there is a reason USA7s exists. It was into the absence of the post-sales support network that it showed why a club like this is needed. We provide each other a form of support network. Its not perfect. Its limited but then so to is its cost. Its not ideal but for the committed enthusiast, they can make it work. I think your approach to talk with other owners is the right one, however, you may want to re-calibrate your expectations on ownership experience now to prevent later disappointment as, unfortunately, what you rightly critique, is a major part of the ultimate price of an admission to a se7en.
