  1. People are still arriving. Jay arrived safely. After dinner we staked out our spaces in the garage so those arriving tomorrow can join us. Later arrivals can fit into the spaces we have so we can all hang out together. 8 cars here so far. Rest arrive tomorrow morning. Schedule is 7am for breakfast. 7.30 tech inspection. 8.30 drivers briefing. First cars on track at 9am. Sevens head out around 10:15am.
  2. I will start a new thread for photos and will post here over the coming days. People are starting to trickle in. Graham and Tom are here - just dropping their trailers off and checking into hotels. I am just hanging out in the garage watching the donors…sorry…riders on their bikes. Predictably, 3 laps into the session and it is another red flag and ambulance to pick up the wounded. Paul and Jay are on their way - photo from the Garden State Parkway rest area. Off to gather the kit I need for tomorrow.
  3. Having visited Birkin America last year, during my convenient break down, I am confident he has the pieces. The place was huge with a ton of spares stacked high. There were a lot of nosecones on the shelves - question is which one as there was more than one style over the years.
  4. This was predictable. Just to do an engine change the regs do require a state inspection following to confirm it continues to meet roadworthiness and emissions. Obviously they are trying to trap non-like-for-like changes but they trap everything. Most people do not disclose the engine change and travel below the radar. Most of the problem in NJ is the regs on matters like this are not fully published for all to read. The inspection and emissions process is partly outsourced to a private company and so some of the information is considered proprietary and kept private. How do they then expect you to avoid getting yourself into trouble? No idea. That said, this guy could have handled it much better than he did. Still does not excuse what I consider to be an over-taxed, overly intrusive and draconian state. As soon as I retire I will be moving out of NJ. Sooner if I can do it.

I have taken many photos of these two at many LOGs and other vintage events over the years. That event looks to be in PA. Aren't they amazing together?
  7. For those arriving at NJMP on Saturday before 5-5.30pm, I suggest you make your way to my garage overlooking the Thunderbolt track. Directions: Come in through the main gate. Turn left at the T intersection then first right. Follow access road until you reach the cluster of trees on the righthand side - there is a sign Corsair Drive on the right. Turn there and then left to garage 367 (3rd last door). The garage is a good spot to hang out watching Donor's Club (track day for bikes). I have vast supplies of water and sodas and a limited supply of beer since people keep drinking it. After around 5-5.30pm on Saturday we will be making our way to the NJMP Clubhouse for drinks and dinner. Look for us at the pool area. Dress is casual. For those arriving Sunday, please head direct to Thunderbolt pits. Look for the main event garage - its the big barn like building to the right of the control tower in the pits. NJMP will email you a Sunday schedule the day before the event. Cars can be stored in the main event garage from after 7-7.30pm on Saturday. Cars can also be stored overnight on Sunday ahead of the Monday event. Due to my garage being fairly full of money pits currently, I have only 2, maybe 3 spaces for sevens for overnight storage inside. As a reminder, NJMP requires use of arm restraints with your 5/6 point harness for open top cars like ours. While I have 2 (maybe 3?) spare sets, I encourage you to get your own this week since I may not have enough spares for every one. They can be purchased cheaply from any number of race shops.

  9. Not a problem. Can be done. I have driven my car on track in that configuration for many years. May want lowered floors but thats an easy change.
  10. Last call for sign ups. We need 2 more cars by Saturday to guarantee our own se7ens run group. If we miss that then you run with the other big fat lardy cars. Calling @RGTorque @NSXguy @SK400 @wemtd @BlakeJ @CarlB @bball7754 Are you joining or not? We would love to have you.
  11. Another way of doing this - bring one of the wheels and we will compare it to my CSR fronts in my NJMP garage. Then we will know.
  12. Do you plan to race your new track car next year?
  13. Covid-19 put a crimp in my regular journeys to the UK and Europe for track days but slowly I am getting back to it. This month saw me get to Oulton Park and Anglesey circuits in the UK. I was last at Oulton Park in 2012 - so its been some time. My trusty steed is a 2018 Caterham 420R. Ex-Bookatrack rental - in fact I was the very first rental customer and "gently" ran it in at Spa doing 500+ miles around the track. Nothing special done to it. Standard 2L Duratec with 210hp. 5 Speed Miata gearbox. LSD. 13 inch Apollo wheels with Avon ZZS "tyres." Only modification I have done is to switch out the leather seat for a Tillett race shell. A company by the name of TFL Racing Limited support me by storing the Caterham in Stratford and then bringing it to the circuit I am signed up for. They have a sizable business in supporting Caterhams (and even Radicals) with this - not just track days but also race events. It ends up a social day as the other drivers are fun company to hang out in the pits with. UK circuits are old school in style. A lot of them were originally carved out of former WW2 airfields. However, Oulton Park is not one of those. Its narrow, tight, and bumpy. It rewards the brave. I was running with Goldtrack for both days. Goldtrack are a higher end track day organizer. Less cars so no delays getting on track. The format is open pit lane. When you want to go out, you just do, no waiting. Passing is on the left only with point by on the straights. A few race drivers took liberties with that when presented with an open track for a dive bomb down the inside of a slower car. Despite that it was well behaved. The crowd is eclectic. Historic racers. Modern racers. Modern super cars. Race and road Caterhams. A raft of super hot hatches. And all skills of drivers in between. The parking lot at Oulton tells the story. The owners were too scared to put these on track. The track machinery looked like this: This very pretty Lotus Elan, with very rare BRM Twin Cam, sadly did not go far. It was towed in after half a lap with electrical issues: In fairness to the Lotus, it was not the only one with electrical issues. The Caterham 420R (not mine) below was possessed. It would start itself even after unplugging the ECU, removing ignition key, removing the cut off key and removing all fuses. It needed an exorcism or just a good auto electrician. It was not fixable on the day. While I was rusty to find the right lines, eventually it all came together on the day. Yes I do have a comedy "Croc" fake New York plate on the car. It was a gift from some UK track day friends who want to warn those overtaking that I might not know how to corner both left and right... I only had one incident all day. I was following a Caterham 620R and he had a HUGE braking moment at the second chicane with massive clouds. I dropped on to the grass to avoid going inside the smoke cloud - after all who knows what lurks inside there! Justice was served as the results of his flat spot were evident in the pits later. Then it was time for a short 2 hour drive over to Anglesey, in Wales. Normally this circuit is shrouded in mist, fog, rain, drizzle, sleet, hail or snow, all with a howling gale for amusement. This is because it is perched on the edge of the Irish Sea, easily the most spectacular siting of a race track I have ever seen. For the first time since I first drove this circuit in 2010, I got fine weather. Unbelievable. The view from the top of the spectator mount was epic. The other reason I like this circuit is that it is a fun drive. Mix of fast and slow corners. Lots of G forces. And that view as you exit Peel and see the Irish Sea with the mountains of Snowdonia in the background....amazing. Even though it was a Goldtrack day, the crowd attending changed. Less high end posers and more real enthusiasts. Far less exotica in the pits to look at. The only problem was most of the attendees had not not been there before so the slow traffic was quite bad as people tried to learn the lines. The good news was there is lots of passing opportunities on this circuit. So it was easy to get by. Only one other TFL customer came with me to Anglesey for the day - a Caterham 620R . The good news about Anglesey is that bulk hp gets you nowhere. A 2019 visit here showed a 420R can hang onto the back of a 620R. It may not be able to pass but provided no slow traffic gets in the way, the 420R can do close lap times. If you ever want to sample the joys of a Caterham in its homeland - whether on road or track - let me know and I can put you in touch with TFL Racing that supports Caterham rentals for visitors. 14. I had the chance recently to stop by Rocky Mountain Caterham in Golden CO to check out whats going on. Golden CO is approximately 30-40 minutes west of Denver in the foothills of the Rockies. A real bonus of the location is it is located at the beginning of some great test driving roads, perfect for shaking down a Caterham. Josh Robbins is in charge of the second iteration of Rocky Mountain Caterham. He bought the remaining stock out of the original Rocky Mountain Caterham, which has been defunct for a few years now. Despite kicking off just prior to Covid-19, it has been a very successful period of sales, only limited by the delays in Caterham production lines. Josh comes to running a Caterham dealership with great family history. His father, Ross, has a great history of driving across the USA in a Lotus 7 S3 (SB2352) for various Lotus Owner Group gatherings or just road tripping. Ross' roadtrip in 2021 was to cover the 4 corners of the USA in his Lotus Elan. Showing love for the marque, Josh now owns SB2352, keeping it in the family. It has just the right amount of patina. Rocky Mountain operates out of two facilities, the primary one being the Golden industrial unit. Plenty of spares are available for a variety of Caterhams, particularly older ones. Anyone need a lowered floor for a Caterham to give the driver a better driving position? A keen track enthusiast, he can show prospective purchasers not just how to get the most out of a Caterham on a mountain road but also on the local High Plains Circuit. Josh has some projects underway, fixing a Euro spec Caterham for possible future sale. He is shown here next to it. He In short he knows his way around Se7ens - its in the family. 16. ET13 is the marked offset for the standard Orcus wheel. The CSR was then machined to ET38 (or possibly ET40) without changing the stamped offset code. The whole sordid saga is summarized here: A potential buyer will need the actual offset measured to know what they are buying.
  17. Looks like my IT abilities exceed your ability to remember names....
  18. John - the Caterham Orcus wheel you refer to as "CSR" was also done for De Dion chassis (post 2010). It will depend on the offset. The CSR wheel was the same as the DeDion wheel but with some machining to get the correct offset. You may just have the Orcus wheels for a De Dion car.
  19. I have the installation instructions that show how it is wired up. If you send a private message with your email address I can send it to you that way. Unfortunately, I cannot attach PDF in the USA7s private message system so it has to be via email.

  21. Hi Des. You could technically register in person on the day at the event. We dont encourage that as NJMP see if we have the numbers for a sevens-only run group two days before. I'd try for making the event if I were you. You would not be the first person troubleshooting problems at this event (cough cough....Vlad, Steve, Tom, Simon, Stewart....)
  22. The problem with roll is your seat of the pants feel for it could be off. Clearly, you are getting faster because the tires have given you more confidence to carry more speed with the more predictable grip so that is a good thing. I definitely would corner weight the car with your weight loaded up in the driver seat. The adjustable platforms may aid that - not sure which ones you are looking at? On track there is noticeable difference to a car corner weighted with 1 person or with 2 people. Getting that right makes a world of difference to handling feel and your confidence in the car, especially in the high speed corners. It does not matter on the road as you are never on the limit (or should not be!). I would then try the car on track and assess it before going any further. One step at a time in making suspension changes. Personally I don't think your roll looks extreme given where you are in the S corner. My US car rolls a lot at the rear but it handles very well so I have not tried to change it. Flat handling is not always a sign of a good handling car - it is a result of the set up. I searched a bunch of photos to compare rear roll angles with the S suspension versus the R suspension - Donington Circuit for these. My silver car is a 2017 420R and the charcoal car is a 2017 620S. Speed through chicane on National configuration is identical so power is not a factor. Tires are same. Mine is an SV versus the S3 620S so optically the SV roll will look flatter than the S3. The R pack option does make the car corner slightly flatter at the rear than the S Pack. If you do think a change is needed after trying the corner weighting, then I would go springs as the next change. Always fix the primary cause first as the secondary factor can be used to tune the results. Caterham have a tendency to under-spec springs in their cars. Uprating to something stiffer all round maybe what you need? If the car feels good then I would not change just because you think it looks weird in a photo.
