  11. Does the side panel really displace heat from the engine compartment or is it more cosmetic? Is the driver's seat forward of the passenger's seat as suggested in one pic? Are they adjustable??? Rob
  12. We put the car up on a lift yesterday .. First we had to put down 4 pieces of wood onto which we rolled the car .. to get enough clearance to allow the four lift pads to fit underneath. Then the first thing we noticed is that the two rubber fuel lines are dry rotted and terribly close to the drive shaft at the differential. So we replaced both fuel lines .. and then fabricated a bracket and screwed in place to secure both fuel lines away from the shaft. Of course I did spill gas all the way down my shirt in the process! :cuss: Car is running better .. Rob
  13. Yes .. it's been a very long trip! Rob
  14. Yesterday I finally pulled out the instructions for programming my VDO speedo (which I bought used from Mazda and he had put some miles on it.) So I figured how to set it for a one mile drive .. pushed the button at the right time .. and the odometer said: 777.3 Is that a weird coincidence or what?? Now after two days of driving I'm up to 795. Car sounds great! Rob
  15. Great day here in Atlanta too. I drove it to the mechanics' shop and then home and finally to the pool. All the parents and cool kids were very interested. Yesterday I got stopped by an ex-brit who kept saying, "That's a Super Seven! I haven't seen one in 25 years since I left the UK." I didn't say, "Rotus made in Maryland" Rob
  16. Also bought a few more Ladies' belts at the thrift store to better secure the spare tire in place. Three are better than one. See the pic on the back cover slip of Robert Ortenburger's book, Lotus and the Independents. Rob
  17. Hella Supertone Test: The lawn guys were mowing and trimming the yard next door and running their gas powered machines and wearing ear protection. So I pushed the horn button and they all turned and looked a little surprised! Two came over and we talked. Rob
  18. Car has been on hiatus for the duration of my vacation .. Now back to the car. I got to it yesterday .. cranked it up and it was running worse ... revving up to 4000 ! So I fiddled with the carbs a little bit and finally just drove it to my mechanic friends' shop. They looked it over and got it running much better. Not perfect but much more manageable. This morning I'm going back to the shop and we're going to put it on the lift just to check out the undercarriage and make sure everything is OK with fuel lines and whatever. Plus I hope to find the reverse switch and wire in the reverse function for for the Muth Mirror Module. I had a problem with the pin connection in the Grant Security Steering wheel interface .. So I bought a new pin at Radio Scrap and will solder and glue in place. The later Grant Security connections are better. Still having a VIN problem .. which I hope to resolve soon. Tag to be done after that. Rob
  19. I checked in both Sat afternoon and again Sat night .. it was no go. Rob
  20. Having grown up in Chattanooga, Tenn .. I have spent alot of time driving up to Knoxville .. and Johnson City where I attended school. But I have never heard of the Tail of the Dragon until it was mentioned on this site. Sure I've enjoyed drives through the mountains in my old beat '70s Celicas .. but I have never been near this road! So I cannot comment on the best or most fun ways to get there. But I can say something about Atlanta. This past Friday afternoon I was just a few minutes into my interstate commute to my destination, Jasper, Georgia, where I was to work an evening shift. Jasper is one of the more distant bedroom communities related to the big city. Rush hour was what I expected, much congestion on a Friday afternoon as more poeple try to escape for the weekend. So what did I hear on the radio at 5:15pm about my intended route: Vice President Dick Cheney has made a secret surprise visit! He has just landed at Dobbins Reserve Air Base and the police are preparing to shut down I-75 in both directions to allow for his motorcade to zip unimpeded to nearby Kennesaw. Oh hell! Rush hour has just been shut down and delayed for one hour. So as quckly as I heard the announcement I exited and started burning up some secondary streets. A BMW was with me. But he wasn't much for long as I did some quick right hand / left hand turns through some poorly placed red lights. Then I finally accepted the reality and sat in gridlocked traffic for about 30 minutes after agressively maneuvering myself into the best suited pocket. I was actually only 35 minutes late to work .. and I had the best late excuse to use in months. So on to the drive: Atlantans know their traffic patterns. We have some of the longest commutes in the nation. Most tune into News/Talk 750 WSB AM and listen to Captain Herb Emory in the Sky Copter and his friends to tell us what's happening with traffic. Most of the time the information is to inform us that it's time to get off the main road, find a secluded place and read the newspaper. In the 1950s Interstate 75 in Atlanta began as a beautiful treed, four lane, divided parkway. Now the downtown connector which shares about 7 miles with Interstate 85 has 7-8 lanes each way, including HOV. (If our specialty cars were three wheeled we could use the HOV.) Factoid: In 1976, Interstate 75 was the first national interstate to be completed continuously from terminus to terminus. When leaving downtown Atlanta .. stay in the right hand lanes to go northwest on I-75. (The left hand lanes are I-85 which goes northeast). The next interstate is the belt loop called I-285 which circumnavigates Atlanta. The intersection (exit 259) is called the Cobb Cloverleaf. The radio traffic guys describe traffic problems as being on the inner (clockwise) or outer (counterclockwise) loop. North of here I-75 expands to 8 lanes without HOV northbound. Continue north and after 9 miles watch for exit 268 which is I-575 to Canton, Georgia. This is a divided interstate on which everyone drives really fast (sometimes 80+). It has one really quick turn to the right at the bottom of the hill at exit 16. I-575 terminates after 30 miles in Jasper Georgia where the traffic thins out and continues as Highway 515. There are 4-5 traffic lights. North of Jasper Highway 515 is a beautiful 4 lane divided parkway through rolling hills. The next two towns, Ellijay and Blue Ridge, do have traffic lights. Just after Blue Ridge watch for signs for Spur 60. This is a narrow two lane road which begins at Mineral Bluff, Georgia and connects to NC Highway 19 at the state boarder town of Culberson, NC. Next town is Murphy. Beyond that NC 19 / 64 is a nice 4 lane divided parkway through farmland. After about 25+ miles the highway narrows to two lanes. Follow the signs to continue on 129 to Robbinsville and the Tail of the Dragon. Happy driving! Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
  21. On Santorini, we rode the cable car up to Fira .. but made the mistake of walking down the winding path having to avoid donkey poo at every step and numerous asses (both front and back). Santorini is a collapsed volcano caldera with the volcanic activitiy on the center island. It has a black sand beach! It is the site of that cruise ship that ran aground and sank recently. I really enjoyed the trip. We were aboard the Windstar which holds about 150-160 passengers. Not one of the big ones. And several times they were able to turn off the motor and only use the wind to propel the boat. Rob
  22. Nice top! I tested my Hella Supertones recently .. The lawn guys were mowing and trimming the yard next door and running their gas powered machines and wearing ear protection. So I pushed the horn button and they all turned and looked a little surprised! Two came over and we talked. Rob
  23. A small request: As this forum continues to grow (both in topic threads and member users), would everyone who starts a new thread please title it to its content? This will help us all remember what we were talking about and when. About six months ago, I went back and read some early threads that I had started and retitled them to the context of their contents. Rob
  24. I don't get excited about other cars .. so in being a sub-member of a grander club I would feel lost. This is the spirit that I am enjoying! Rob
