WCM Diff/ driveshaft vibration thunking noise

I started hearing a rattling or thuking noise coming from the center of the car. At first it would only make the noise in a hard right hand corner then throughout the cruise it became much more frequent. It was hard to tell where exactly the noise was coming from. I made sure nothing was loose with the heims or suspension and gave the car a good shake down. everything seems solid. i took out the center console and it seemed like the noise is coming from the start of the diff where the driveshaft attaches, I could be wrong though. Nothing is touching the drive shaft that would cause any vibration or rubbing. I have a few video clips ill try to see if the will upload

Had that in a car a few years ago. A couple of the u-joint needle bearings had failed and the trunnions were rattling around inside the caps. Got it fixed before the joint broke loose.

I had some wierd clunking noises when I first assembled my kit. After pulling the diff, and lots of looking, I finally took out the driveshaft, and the

front u-joint cage was broken, and balls were loose in there.

I called Brian Anderson and he immediately sent me a new driveshaft, and all is well.

Ultralites us CV joint on front and U joint in the rear. I have seen this happen a few times over the years. I suspect that the metal U shaped brace that the diff mounts has an issue on the front support. I think that the sheet metal has torn and allowed the diff to drop and its hiting the rear u joint as it rotates. Or the rubber bushiing has broken. Usually it happens from getting on and off the throttle. If the metal has torn then the solution is to weld a reinforcement strap around the nose of the metal shell. Most of the later cars had this strap added but some of the earlier cars just had a hole drilled thru the metal brace. You will need to pull the trans cover and see what going on there. A diff support brace will keep the nose section from ripping out.

With the trans cover pulled out the drive shaft will look like it clears everything. If you look back under the u shaped metal cover the diff nose has about a 4" round flange that the U joint adapter bolts to. That is where the noise is most likely coming from. The bolt that holds the nose up can collide with the u joint if over tightened.

Awesome thanks for the pictures and responses. I will have to take a better look now that I know what I'm looking for. I tightened the 4 drive shaft bolts so far and only one was a tiny but loose. The car is making the vibration most now when I slightly back off the gas and decelerate.

Since the rear mounting bolts go through rubber grommets and the front is a single center mount you are going to still have a lot of torque twist unless you also add a differential brace like most of us who seriously beat the cars have had to do. I tried to upload a photo but it wouldn't let me because it was already in a previous thread called "reverse lights". It will be the red inverted "V" shaped item if you find it on here.

Thanks for all the help. I know that the front diff mount is ok and it looks like it was reinforced in the past. I'll have to check. The rear mounts but I found that the bolt that hold my exhaust to the hanger fell out since it's a new exhaust. That's probably where the vibration is coming from. Pretty simple fix once I find the right bolt to put back in there. Oh well at well at least I gave the car a good look over if it's nothing else.
