Sorta Se7en - The Velocity Rail

Recommended Posts

A twist on the Aerial Atom showed up at C & C the last two months. They are made in Arvada, CO. I visited their shop today and got a ride in one of them.

Three guys build these and their craftsmanship is very good. There are two varieties, one accommodates an Audi engine, either the 1.8 turbo or the V8 from the A8. The other car is for the LSx engines and uses a transaxle from the Boxter S. It is 8" longer in length but I think the shorter Audi engined cars have better proportions.

There are plans to change the fabric body panels for fiberglass and also to add fenders.

I got a ride in the black Audi V8 version which is the owner's personal car. It was a fun ride, although on city streets I got a good feel for the power and cornering as well as the ride. We also went on the Interstate. It has far less wind buffeting than my Caterham, probably due to the steeply raked windshield. Can you guess what that windshield comes from?

Their website is at http://velocityrails.com/. I priced out a V8 version and it came to about $20k less engine and transmission. That includes assembly to a roller. They will also install your engine. If you want to assemble it yourself they will also sell you a kit that should require only some drilling, no welding or machine work.

The red car with the LS1 engine was bought by a dealer in exotic cars and will be up for sale on the Denver Mecham auction in August.

  • 3 weeks later...

I can't get excited about this or an Atom. Cars without a skin look like dune buggies.

I built a Chenoweth dune buggy, but I put the fiberglass front and sides on it, and it looked a lot better than the Velocity

Well, Skip,

Seams like the Velocity Rail is a complete bust in the looks department. A'dune buggy' ugly, light weight, exoskeletal car with a high powered V8. Well, who really needs skin when your bad to the bone  ......may fate allow me to drive an LS9 variant.....whenever someone finally builds it. :jester:

There is more stylish fiberglass body work coming in the future.

Xcarguy, he will put any engine you want in the car, just bring a bushel of money.

Skip,

Therein lies the problem; my bushel holder has a big hole in the bottom. :jester:
