Proper hood badge

Jacques

Recently acquired 1988 Caterham came with a Lotus hood badge which fits nicely but is clearly incorrect. Car has a 2 litre Cosworth. Which badge should it have? Lotus badge is 57 cm in diameter, 37 cm between rear studs.

I don't think a Caterham ever came stock with a Cosworth YB engine, but did come with the Cosworth BDR around the same time.  I think the most appropriate badge would be the "16 Valve" or the "HPC" versions.  They might be hard to find though!

Good to know - I haven't researched the Caterham much yet.  Does the 'Super' label have any special significance?  I've seen some badges with just a large 7.  J

If I recall during the history of the original Lotus 7, there was an engine upgrade that made it a Super 7. It was either larger or even had "super" in the name (super sprint? or something?) and as far as I know the name has stuck around as it was only made with that engine going forward.

Can't find the source on that right now, but I'm sure somebody will correct me otherwise.

As I recall, it started with the S1s with the Coventry Climax engines.  With the S2, Super Seven was used for the Cosworth-modified 1500 engines (both the 109E and 116E, I think).  All S3s were "Super Sevens".  S4s were not, until Caterham took over - and I think they used Super Seven since they couldn't use the Lotus logo.

I am sure SENC has it correct. There were only a few Coventry Climax engined Series 1 made. I think Graham Hill raced one with great success. My 1959 series 1 was an oddball. Perhaps the original owner could not afford a Coventry Climax engine but did not want to go slow with the tiny Ford side-valve. He installed a 1300 Alfa twincam.

I'm not big on FB but I had no idea such sites existed.  Thanks for the tip.  I've applied to join.  I've got friends in the UK who could assist in purchases/mailing.

At the price I paid for my 7, way back when, anyone would have been crazy to try and make a fake one to try to pass it off as original for a profit. That is unless their labor cost was $0.25 an hour and parts were free. Even decent, running series 2 were closer to 1000-2000 pounds max sale price. Not so sure now, given the prices that real ones in good condition can sell for.  Oh I wished I had $18,000 back in 1962 or 1963 when I first got (real) close to the team 250 GTO at Bridgehampton Double 500 races. That is what a new one sold for back then. I think there are some replicas going around now, but obviously not worth the $36,000,000 or so a real one might sell for. I am hooked on the 7 but if someone gave me a T61 or RSK or 250 GTO I might be even happier.

Does anyone know current pricing on 7 hood badges?  Have just received prices for a 7 badge (black and silver) and a Caterham yellow and green version....from the UK.  The black one is 80 pounds.  Is that what you have to pay?  Cheers

About $50 USD is what I've been paying, but I typically combine shipping to have about one big order from the UK a year.
