I'm not entirely sure of the registration process in SC. Someone way back when posted a big to do list that I will now frantically try and find. Lol.

Yes we did. This will be fully Customs-cleared

You definitely want a Customs Broker working for you.

Not because you can't do it yourself, but because of the investment you have in this.

The brokers know the importation language and are in regular communication with the inport specialists.

Do I still need a broker if it's going to be "customs cleared"?  I do know a fellow who used to be a customs broker, in a past life.

There was import/DOT/EPA paperwork that had to be filed when I did mine and I couldn't be on-site as it cleared to do that - so I had to have a broker and give power of attorney to file that paperwork on my behalf.  May be different in your circumstance, but definitely check with Caterham and the shipper.

I would treat it like consulting an attorney before a starting a business selling roadkill meat pies,  what could go wrong?

 

Call a broker or a friend who knows the business and ask if you need a broker.

If your import passses thrthe port and Customs swimmingly, great.  If not, the time and storage fees can add up.  I do know that Customs doesn't care about your storage fees and they may not answer to you at all.

Do you have an import agent or broker sorting out clearance?  It does not happen automatically.  

 

The customs folks do not just call you to say it is cleared.  It is all done electronically and you are not on the online portal to know this.  

 

The priority is always with the import agents as they know the customs guys and have the process down pat.  They have the phone numbers.  Who are you going to call?

 

Storage charges can sometimes start even before customs clearance.  You get a day or two grace then the charges can start - it will depend on when they get to your container.  Once they have your container and its accessible for pick up then the timer starts ticking on storage charges even if it is not yet cleared by customs.  This is why you want an agent to expedite customs clearance.  Whoever, the agent is should have a recommendation for transport as well.  

 

If you want to trailer the crate then start thinking how you get box onto trailer.  You may not have access to a forklift or need to bribe a guy with a forklift to do it.  Those guys are not just hanging around for you either.

 

You need to scramble on this now since it will take time to put in place and storage charges are really expensive.

Ummmm, I’m a lil panicky.  After a delivery call where we talked about (no joke) the rough parking lot at my builders shop, I thought my role was simply chilling and waiting on a car.  I.  Am.  Panic.  Right now.  (Emits very Nervous LOL).  

 

I will figure it out, I know Bruce will straighten me out with a call when he wakes up on the west coast.  (I think most or all of this has been done, and I have just been blissfully unaware).

 

If all else fails I will be back on the forum recruiting a crack team of highly skilled individuals to conduct a midnight op to “liberate” my crates from the port of Charleston.  I’m thinking we call it Operation Scalded Cat!

Okay okay okay, I am in contact with Brilliant Bruce and he has pulled me off the ledge.  

 

Pretty much all this is done and dusted, I think.  

 

I guess we can cancel the midnight raid on the Port of Charleston which is a bit of a relief cause let’s be honest, I am too pretty for jail!

So... I have a good buddy who builds race Porsches and BMWs. He offered to make the run. 

 

In theory we will get a lil notice, it will go to a warehouse after my 2 crates have been "unconsolidated" from the container. 

 

We will get a forklift guy at the warehouse to slide the crates on to his 18 foot trailer (it's very low as he rolls racecars on and off). 

 

We will strap the crates down using approx. 250 heavy duty straps and drive to his huge racecar shop. Once there, uncrate on the trailer, roll the roller down.  Uncrate engine transmission etc. Install. Plumb. Spanner check. 

 

Then the fun begins. 

 

I will keep you all advised as the saga wraps up.

Well...

 

The saga continues:

 

The container with my crates in it has been selected for a CET exam...  Whatever that is. I googled for you all. And for my own bewildered amusement I guess. You cannot make this up. (I mean *I* am not creative enough to make this up) 

 

Apparently the CET (Contraband Enforcement Team) is looking for drugs or bombs. Lol good luck fitting drugs in a 7. You couldn't smuggle 3 ibuprofen in that car. It is made out of sprite cans, zip ties and English elbow grease.

 

Best part: I will pay between $500-$1000 for the exam AND any storage fees (which there def WILL be).

 

Luckily Bruce is steering the ship so to speak and has assured me this is nothing over which to stretch my neck. 

 

It's times like these I really wish I drank though.

Hey, that sucks, CET exams are more likely in LTL where you share the container with other importers as any slip up in paperwork will more likely trigger the algorithm to alert CBP to make the inspection, there is no good news as the CES is a bit of a black hole, most often, at least in my experience in NYC and BAL its a week or more before you get any information back, they are not very effective communicators unfortunately, but at least you will share the cost of the transport to and from the CES with the other importers in your container. The other thing is that anecdotally I have heard that Automotive parts and assemblies are more often inspected than say ping pong balls as there is a ton more legal use requirements on Automotive.

Yes these are common exams.  Been through more than a few myself.  Colonoscopies are cheaper and done by professionals.  The pain point is it delays delivery by about a week and you pay for the privilege of some officer to rip apart your crate unless they are using the container scanner.  These exams usually go after the one-time importer (e.g. you) or as @Bartman notes where someone has screwed up paperwork in your shared container.  

 

The only wrinkle I expect is they see all the parts bags and ask for them to be separately identified at which point you explain it is part of a whole kit and to refer them to the inventory as part of the customs documentation.  

 

You'll be fine.  I am sure its because your reputation preceded you....
