weather equipment for the race roll cage

Hello,

I am putting an order on a 420 cup, SV chassis, drop floor. I really want the race roll cage.

What options do I have for weather equipment ?

I suppose the caterham windshield can be installed with the race roll cage...correct ?

Need something on the top (hood of some sort) and some weather protection on the side

I'd ask Caterham or the reseller you are dealing with.  Your question is of interest to me because I am buying a 2012 Superlight SV that has a cage.   My research is that the factory weather options are limited and maybe there are some limited options from softbitsforsevens but I doubt you are going to get full protection or regular attachment of doors to windshield.   https://www.softbitsshop.co.uk/slr-cage-weather-set-708-p.asp   I'm not sure if this is a current 420 Cup order form but there is a note on it about weather equipment non-compatibility with teh race rollcage.

Which cage? There are three:

 

1) The track day cage (with easy entry)

2) the Sport cage (same as 1) without the easy entry as there are bars across)

3) the FIA race cage

 

Option 1 looks like this.  The easy entry is because there are no bars to side of the half circle bars.

 

 

 

 

Option 2 is has extra bars across the top at the side of the semi circles preventing easy access.

Yes the windscreen and side curtains will mount with cage installed.  I do recommend that you put protective strip or rubber between top of windscreen and top front bar of cage - the paint will rub off both as it is a tight fit.  

 

I have never seen the full hood used on a cage.  It would be a big job to make it work but I bet it has been done.   However, I do know SoftBits4Sevens has done custom half hoods with cages.  With windscreen and side screen plus a rear mesh you would kept reasonably dry.  

 

Have you ever tried to get into a Caterham with a full race cage?  If not then I recommend you try.  You get in through the top.  Also, if this is for road use then keep in mind you need to wear a helmet at all times when driving.  Clouting an unprotecting head against a roll cage is a bad thing.

Going through the configurator, it looks like Caterham has made some changes to the cage options.  The current Race cage looks like a combination of option 2 above and your FIA race cage -- i.e. it has the same curved and straight bars on the top as the FIA race cage, but the forward hoop of option 2.

According to the configurator, you can't option the windscreen with the Race cage, and looking at the photos, that makes sense, as it appears the forward hoop will occupy space needed by the windscreen stanchions.

I am familiar with cages, Hans and 6 point Harness. I used to race SMT and porsche SPB.

I assume the recommendation to wear a helmet is the same (for road driving) whether is is the sport cage and race cage isn't it ?

The track day cage doesn't have the lateral bar, which I presume is the bar the head could hit. I don't know what clearance there is under the lateral bar... In the SMT, I had a drop pan, for this reason, which I am specing for the 420 cup.

Am I understanding correctly ?

On the same theme, if anyone in the SF Bay Area has a cat with a cage of some sort, please let me know. I think it is indeed a very good idea to check head clearance, ease of ingression etc
