Seven Mishaps

My first Seven mishap .. I thought I had everything secured in the car as I went down the road in August. But a piece of paper flew around and out of the car as I was going 40 mph. I remember thinking .. what is that? Is it important? Well after arriving at my destination .. I realized that it is a printed check for about $30. Oh well .. So I went back to that part of the street and searched in vain .. no Check.

So about 3 days later I receive a USPS envelope with a cellophane window .. with my address .. and there is my check shining though! Some nice person gave it to the postman! :)

I once checked the oil on my previous Seven standing somewhere in the street and while I did some old fellow came and bombarded me with the usual questions concerning Sevens. So I forgot to lock my hood. Guess what happened next day at 60 mph. :banghead:

And on that Seven the hood had hinges near the wind screen so it didn't simply fly away like it would do with my current Caterham. Instead it folded itself over the wind screen like a blanket which meant I suddenly found myself in blind flight - and this without a proper IFR license.

I think that I will put some kindof "map" net on the passenger side of the tunnel.

Here are a couple of photos of how I addressed the storage issue in a Se7en. These are bags made by a company in St. Louis and purchased in a sporting goods store in the camping supplies department. Used cable ties to fasten them to the frame tubes. The bags have zippers to keep everything contained inside.

I used two of these bags on the passenger side. The bag in the front is larger.

Is that anyone we know?

I have 2 fire extinguishers in the car just in case, but probably won't go the full remote "fire supression systems" that you see on Miuras.

Subject: [birkinowners] Fire Sale...

So, there I was.. driving along on a gorgeous saturday morning when my

FPR ( I am making an assumption here.)let go and allowed 87octane

Quick Trip gasoline to spray in my engine compartment at 50psi. By the

time i pulled over.. bent over to look for gasoline dripping, said

gasoline had found an ignition source and went off like an FAE!!

Long story short. My car is totalled and i have the opportunity to buy

it back. I would consider buying it to salvage the bell housing..

water pump tensioner and T9 with close ratio kit. Does anyone need any

Birkin parts? frame is OK. skin is gone it has upgraded lower A arms

by Woody.

I don't believe a puny extinguisher would have helped in this case (assuming somebody is brave enough to take off the bonnet of a burning car). The fuel pump will squirt an amazing amount of fuel in short time when the hose bursts. Maybe a plumbed in extinguisher kit?

:iagree:

Fire extinguisher will save the day in case of a small electrical fire, or fire due to oil leak - if fuel starts spraying, your life is worth more than the car.

Among my many (mis)adventures at the Dragon was this: I was attempting to repair my broken throttle linkage. For reasons I don't recall (and can't possibly now imagine), I took the fire extinguisher out of its holder in the passenger compartment.

Later when I finally got everything repaired ,and being exceedingly late for Saturday's Sevens' festivities, I hurriedly shoved it back into the passenger area, between a bunch of junk I had stuffed there. Way too busy to secure it properly.

Unbeknownst to me, the safety pin had fallen out, so when I shoved the extinguisher back in, the trigger was compressed and out came the fire suppressant . Man, that stuff really shoots out fast!

By the time I figured out what was happening, I had bought myself another hour of delay, this time for cleanup. And yes, one of my many recent repairs was to a leaky gas hose connection above the carbs. Thanks for the reminder that its past time for a new fire extinguisher.

You know, you just don't get stories like these with regular cars:).

i found this bag at Wal-Mart for $4.00, it is meant as a trash bag but works great for keys, wallet, glasses etc.It is about 10"h x8"w x5"d and fits nicely between the seats and doesn't interfere while driving or getting in or out of the car. I used a few extra snaps leftover from my tonneau cover to secure it to the bulkhead. The base for the snaps is pop riveted to the bulhead.
