  • 2 weeks later...

finally got to spend some time on the car. project of the day was the dash pod for the driver side.

Everything is temporarily tacked in.

The dash will have quite a bit of rake (30 degrees)

A shot of the driver side pod. It will be connected via a tube at the top to the passenger side to form the hood line.

Playing with the steering wheel.

2nd pod in place...

The bar on the driver side needs to be adjusted up 1/2"

Tomorrow night i'll get the tube across the top and that should form the dash structure.

With the seat moved back, the car is super easy to get into... I almost have to reach to operate the pedals.

Looking good Mazda.

You better get going if you're going to have it ready for Carlisle! :D

Bruce :7drive:

Everytime I look at the car I realize there is SO much work left... I guess I'm just not as dedicated as Kevin to work on it in 48 hour chunks.

The current goal is to have the car mechanically running by Carlisle. Not sure if we will be able to skin any of it. I might just have to park it far away from the seven tent to not offend anyone

If we park beside each other we can offend each other!

Hi Mazda,

I like the way you tied in the center of the frame with the hoops. Looks like it will be strong and safe. I also like the first photo with that V8 out front. Gives it that " No Bullshit Look ".

Keep hammering away !!

Steve:cheers:

Oh dude, keep the cardboard...adds lightness!

Besides, I like Frankenseven with just that little bit of unfinished feel that it's had since, oh, we first met at Skyline east. Didn't it have a wooden veneer dash at one point?

No, it was brown vinyl. That's what was on the car when I bought it.

With Arya's school done (yes, the man graduated from VT :yesnod: ), he is putting some time on the car this week. First project in the firing order is the headers. Starting with a set of LS1 long tube headers, we had to modify them to clear the frame. In the process, we found the tube lengths on the original header were about 1" different, so we set out to fix that problem as well...

Here are a couple of pics of Arya's handywork

Steel stock tacked to the tubes to maintain their relative positions before they get chopped

Shape of the new bends required to clear the chassis... note the back section is longer. Luckily for us, the original header primaries got shorter as they went from front to back, so we simply corrected that with our longer additions.

This week has been disappointingly slow. Work has been killer, and Arya keeps getting called away with family duties.

Today we managed to get the steering done. It's nice to have a working steering wheel in the car again. It resulted in spontanious imaginary drives in the car.

Arya came up with a couple of tricks along the way. Here are some pics:

wheel looks off center due to camera angle... but it's nice and centered

current state of the dash...

The steering can telescope (bolt is temporary)...

Closest fit near the headers...

The whole thing will get powdercoated before final assembly.
