spotcheck
The corporation I work for does lots of business transactions - purchase agreements, supply agreements, plus many acquisitions. We have some internal rules, including: "You can't do a good deal with a bad guy." "Your first loss is your best loss." "When you are digging a hole for yourself, the first thing to do is throw the shovel away." This situation won't get better. Walk away.

locostv8
If the check paying for the car was sent thru USPS then you might be able to get the postoffice to take some action under mail fraud.

southwind25
Nothing could be worse than the very first car i ever bought. A FIAT X-19 :_deadhorse: That car was on jackstands more than on it's wheels. :ack:
Kitcat
I had a Fiat 128 (wh/I think the X-19 was based on). Bought it new in 1970 as my daily driver. Toss-up on reliability vs. the Seven. Since my Seven is 10 years old and hadn't been used much in recent years, many of the problems have been age & disuse related. So maybe the Seven is more reliable. On the other hand the Seven is mostly a garage queen-maybe 6K miles a year of driving (tho always spirited or track days), whereas the Fiat was on the road more (when it wasn't in the repair shop) so the Seven has had less opportunity to break or for things to fall off. Honorable mention in the unreliability sweepstakes shd be given to the Austin-Healey Sprite I bought new in '67. Any distance farther than a large parking lot & I was looking for trouble . gjslutz
My first 12 cylinder was an 1971 XJ12 Jag. I thought about adding stop leak to the vacuum system due to all the leaks. All of the hoses would crack from the heat. When I picked up an 1974 XKE 12 I found out the problem was still there. Both cars were problems from the first week on. I had a couple Italian 12's during the same time, with no problems, they just ran. Even my Lotus Elan was better than the Jaguars. Thankfully I missed the Fiat's. OrangeS1
Nothing could be worse than the very first car i ever bought. A FIAT X-19 :_deadhorse: That car was on jackstands more than on it's wheels. :ack: "Your mileage may vary." I owned the first yellow and black X-1/9 delivered in Chicago. It was almost totally reliable as a daily driver and racked up 30K miles in the first two years. The handling was amazing, especially considering it had tires with only a 145mm section width. The only issue was that once it popped a coolant hose in the engine compartment resulting in a huge cloud of steam coming out of the engine cover. Not as much fun as a Seven, but still a great driver's car. Traded it for a VW Scirocco that had dismal reliability. Mostly electrical gremlins. Still have the special tools needed to change the valve shims on the X-1/9. Ah, the "good old days. The X-1/9 was also way more reliable than its predecessor, a mechanical injection 2002. My "Seven" has been on jackstands a lot more than the FIAT. Sorry for the off topic tangent.
S1Steve
My first car was a Fiat 850 Spyder, I told my grandfather I wanted a " Sports Car ", and he found this rusty car that should have gone to the Junk Yard. But it came to my Dad's garage instead, and I learned about Bondo, welding, engine rebuilding, painting. It took me 2 years to get it running and driving. I had it on the road for 6 weeks, and then my friends Mom ran into it ,and crushed the rusty front end. But I drove it home, and my Mom and I cryed over it's bad luck !!! Oh to be 16 again, not going on 50 !!! I like that orange S1, looks like mine !!!!:yesnod: Steve

Just shows what impeccable taste we both have. Re: 850 Spyder: Can't think of a better car to use as a "learning experience".
