ex-driver
Hi, noob here. I don't have the skills to build a Seven, so this is just purely for discussion. I've seen a company called Stalker fitted a GM v6 in a seven replica. Since the LT and LS series engine isn't much larger (physical dimension) than the v6, has anyone attempted to fit one of those in a seven's chassis? I imagine 350hp in an 2000lb car would be pretty kick ass.
xflow7
Welcome! The answer is yes, it has been done. A gentleman on here named Mazda (aka slngsht) has a hotted up LS-1 in a Rotus chassis. and it weighs much less than 2000lbs, IIRC. Cue Mazda in 5...4...3...2...1... And then cue the BEC crowd in 10...9...8...

You have to be careful which seven you choose, because even in my Rotus, which is bigger than most, there is not a whole lot of room to spare. I kept the T56 tranny, but if you ever plan such a thing, ditch that in favor of a TKO unit. My car weighs in at roughly 1750 (roughly because I've had some configuration changes since I last weighed it - lost some weight in some areas, gaining it back with more rubber, bigger roll bar, etc...). Rotus is a pretty heavy seven to begin with. I think a completely normal looking LS powered 7 that weighs 1500 lbs is possible. There are a couple of scratch built sevens under various stages of construction over at locostusa.com. One guy (I think wittlebeast???) is trying to build a super light LS1 based seven, *I think* with a 3 speed box of some kind. His target weight is super low (I can't remember so I'm not going to quote numbers).
Dave W
The Rover aluminum V-8 is probably the most common V8 put into a seven. The V-8 builds and the stalker frames are normally 4 or more inchers wider and 2 or 3 incher longer to be about to shoe horn the engine in between the rails Visit LocostUSA.com and the builders log. every thing from small diesel to big V8's engines. and a lot in between. slngsht
My car initially came with the Rover V8. That engine is LIGHT by V8 standards (not counting bike based V8s)... and SMALL. But it has nowhere near the punch of the LS1. I think you can get in the neighborhood of 300hp out of the olds/buick/rover engines fairly reliably and relatively cheaply. After that, it'll cost $$$, and there are not too many state side vendors that support them anymore.

Al N.
You know, I was just wondering if anybody has taken a wrecked GNX motor and put it in a Stalker....those are supposedly even more massaged than the normal ones. That said, those SuperStalkers are crazy fast. As in, I have have a pretty fast Caterham all things considered, and I was frightened by the way Paul W. was able to pull away from me down in Deal's Gap... Also, there are the narrow, bike-engine based V-8s like the RST or Hartley that sort of fit into narrow bodied Cats/Westies....but they cost about as much as a Zetec-powered Cat all-in. Mazda, I know when you win the lottery you're going to do a LS9 engine in the Rotus, right?

Jack L67 is certainly an option - it is cheap and fairly reliable, and 350hp makes for a stupid fast seven. With a supercharger and iron block, I'm not sure if it's any lighter than the LS1 though. Engine weight numbers are all over the place on the internet, and 350 is the bone stock hp for the basement of the LS architecture.
slngsht
You know, I was just wondering if anybody has taken the GNX motor and put it in a Stalker.... I remember when I was in AWE of GNX's numbers. Looking back now... 275 hp, 330 ft.lbs. of torque is pretty ordinary. Back then, it was amazing to see a brick like that do the quarter in the 13's. Of course the buick 3.8 has been built to insane power levels with forced induction.

I read somewhere that the actual output of the ASC/McLaren GNX motors was more like 350 hp/400 ft-lbs, but they downplayed the numbers so that it wouldn't overshadow the 'Vette. Though I'm sure wrecked GNXs are rare (or perhaps not rare, but immediately snatched up by the faithful).

slngsht
Here is a interesting comparison of the Hartley V8 to a Chevy V8: http://www.dpcars.net/dp1test/recent.htm From dp's site: Just emphasizing the relevant parts  It is not unheard of to drop $35K+ on a smallblock and from what I'm told, at least within some circles most end up closer to that number than not (granted, that's with way more than 400hp). Hartley's V8 is a work of art. I would love to have one to play with. But realistically, the trusty LS1 will put out 400-450 hp with just a mild cam upgrade (few hundred dollars), and still idle like a kitten, sit in traffic all day when it has to, run a couple hundred thousand miles, and still deliver awesome performance - and you can pick it up used with tranny for about $3K. That including harnesses, PCM, etc..., and huge aftermarket support for reprogramming tools, parts...

andrew7
EX, lots of options available. A Regal GNX motor will fit in a standard "book chassis". The NA version is in the frame sitting in front of the garage, it could be intercooled, turboed and MegaSquirted very easily. Its the only seven I know of with a little go pedal and a big whoa pedal, no clutch needed. Why not put a motorcycle engine in? A 150 pounds for an Aluminum 4 cyl with a sequential tranny and FI, 175hp at 14000 rpm all for under $2000. I shift out of first near 70, plus they can be turbo to over 300 hp if you want. Those Chevy V8s are for AARP members like Mazda, I only need half the pistons to keep up. :boxing: :jester:
