solder_guy
Bucket seat versus tonneau? I want bucket seats with removable headrests .. so that I can fit on a tonneau over the passenger's side or maybe the driver's side too if not driven .. but thus far all I can find that will fit are cheap buckets without headrest hardware. (Caterham seats are just too expensive) .. so anyone want to share how they may have a solution? Rob
Al N.
Rob- If you don't already have a tonneau cut, some people do the little pockets to accommodate the seat tops. Jill Judd Site If you do have a tonneau, then perhaps someone can modify it to accommodate your new seats. -Al
southwind25
The factory stock seats in the Birkin are terrible! the slide mounts work well, and they have a good headrest but it's like sitting on an old wooden church bench! OUCH, about 10 miles and your Bum is bumming. We want to keep the tonneau which means removable headrests. we started looking for an alternative but  YIKES..the cost of seats are nuts! I have bought cars for less than the cost of most of the seats we have seen! besides, most are too wide or have the funky high back to them. So our answer is..we are going to Make a pair! I got some new "scrap" sheet .100 aluminum from where i work and i have an old sheet metal brake and luckily i can TIG a bit..Mary is good with her sewing machine.. We are going to try and make a set not unlike the Kirkey vintage aluminum seat but weld in a couple tubes to put the existing headrest into. We will use the existing slides as well ((unless i can make up a nice set from some reject slides from work as well.)) I figure i cant possibly make something less comfortable than what i have. A company that makes boat covers did the work. I was impressed with the quality of work performed and the owner is pleased. powderbrake
Check out Ultrashield seats, prices are reasonable. They are what I have in my Ultralite, but the headrest portion has been cut down about 6". Ultrashield Here is a pic of the tonneau that I have. Yours could be simpler, without the windshield pockets. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1997433235_tonneau.jpg
Dave W
Rob Another option "if you can weld" is to use a pair of salvaged seats with head rests, and actually section the seat frame so it will fit in a seven. Most seats can be taken apart easily, the foam trimmed to the narrower width, and you end up with a comfortable seat. The only thing is most house hold sewing machines can not handle leather or vinyl, you may have to have a professional shop sew the sections back together. While you are at it, you save half the wt by removing all the adjust mechanism. It worked for me Dave W :7drive:
Birkin42
You could try the factory Birkin seats. I'm sure they wouldn't be too difficult to get hold of since a lot of owners seem have swapped them out. Maybe you might find them acceptable for comfort. I have the new version (2003) and am hoping they are better comfort wise then the earlier ones that most seem to have. Otherwise I too may be swapping them out. I have to get the car on the road first though.
lotusman1951
:7drive: Think better foam, closed cell, latex, lumbar support-its all contact cement and sissors-plus they wont soak thru when wet.
solder_guy
Thanks for all the suggestions and pics .. I had started cutting down a seat from a Honda Pilot .. but was getting discouraged about how it was looking .. Maybe I'll attack it again soon .. and make it fit and work. I like the removable headrests .. as they are square shaped and have a large square hole in the center. Rob
