DB6 Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Any good stuff you guys like and where its best to put, I have toasted feet. I used a product years ago on an old Vette, really nothing more that 2 layers of aluminum foil with ceramic dust sandwiched in the middle and sticky peel off off on one side (I think I got it from Summit) , this was for interior use, due to footwell limits any one try stuff out of the footwell? i.e engine bay. Does Jet Hot or other Ceramic coatings pull down the footwell temp to notice? Thanks
Al N. Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 My old came with some insulation on on the wirewall...standard optional Caterham stuff, I think. I had the Jet hot done on the headers, but can't say that it worked/didn't work. I never really felt the heat in the pedalbox area was an issue. Though once or twice I felt the heat off the tranny tunnel.
d15b7 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 hi! try 'Pegasus Racing'; they carry all manner of that heat resist stuff. i run alot of it on my road race turbo honda civic; to protect the fuel lines, and plastic looms, and shifter cables, etc etc. works really well, and not too expensive! they have a nice website; give it a look! good luck todd
pksurveyor Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Try J.C. Whitney. http://www.jcwhitney.com/Heat-Shield-General-Purpose-Insulation/600002669.jcw?in_dim_search=1
Ian7 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I bought the heat insulation kit from caterham with my new car. It's installed on all the surfaces of the pedal box and partway down the tunnel. Can't say that I find the cockpit of this car any cooler than my previous seven. I'm going a different route over the winter, with some kind of cooling duct for fresh air to the feet area instead.
pksurveyor Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I agreed with Ian7. My 09 green Caterham has the full Caterham package like yours and the heat factor is more or less the same as my 03 silver Caterham.
southwind25 Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 We ended up doing 2 things.. First we did a header wrap. which we had always done with the race cars as well.. prevents burnt fingers when working over a hot engine as well. But you have to replace the wrap every couple seasons. Then we got an aluminum, fibre sandwich material as you described with sticky back for the outside of the footwell. seems to work fairly well..
scannon Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I had a problem with the foil delaminating from the rubber foam on the driver side footwell insulation due to the heat from the exhaust manifold, turbo housing and downpipe. I also had the toasted until crispy toes syndrome. I used Multi Layer Insulation (MLI)used on spacecraft that I obtained as scrap pieces from where I used to work. I had to patch together smaller pieces which I then glued to the underside of my carpets and under the cover for the trans tunnel. I also made a simple ali heat shield that stands off about an inch in front of the driver side footwell to deflect radiant and convective heat from the exhaust. BTW, it is extremely light, I doubt I added 3 lb to the car. With these two in place, I drove most of last summer in sandals and I seldom noticed any heat on my feet. As fall approached I had to use the heater to keep my feet warm, even with shoes on. I get the MLI scraps free and I think I have enough for another two Se7ens, If anyone wants some let me know and I'll send it along, no charge. Skip
lowflyer Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Not very high tech, but most hardware stores sell a product that I've used in a couple of different cars. It's a triple layered item, the outer layers are aluminum foil with the center being the same stuff that they use in bubble wrap. I had a hot rodded '56 Chevy and ran it on the inside of the floor above the exhaust system, worked well. On my Stalker, I cut pieces and fitted them inside the footwell areas. I can't be sure what the stuff is called but it is sold by the linear foot, and comes in a 36" width. Price is very cheap also. You can see it at the sides and bottom of the footwell here. The aluminum at the front of the passenger's side footwell is the bulkhead between the foot space and battery box. There's more of this insulation inside the battery box. http://www.usa7s.net/ASPNETFORUM/upload/1968443478_stalker115.jpg BTW, I did my headers with a JetHot coating. The coating went dull within a short time, in the length within 12" of the engine. I checked with JetHot and they tell me that this is because the temperatures went about 1300 degrees!
powderbrake Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 I used a material called Cool It from Thermo tec Cool it I believe I got it from Jegs or Summit. I lined the inside of the passenger footwell and the passenger side of the car, and also the exterior of the footwell. I also have Jet Hot coating on the headers. My wife tells me it never gets hot in her footwell. http://www.usa7s.net/ASPNETFORUM/upload/605798209_IMGP4620.JPG http://www.usa7s.net/ASPNETFORUM/upload/686893469_IMGP4631.JPG Note the shiny, aluminized mylar goes towards the heat source, the aluminum covered side goes away from the heat source I then covered it with a corrugated plastic used for signs, very lite and replaceable http://www.usa7s.net/ASPNETFORUM/upload/1570843928_IMGP4622.JPG
