The Se7en Got a New Trailer for Christmas

During the trip to the Kansas City Se7ens Gathering this summer fighting head winds going out and coming back, my Silverado got 6.5 mpg towing an 8 x 16 enclosed trailer. I decided it was time to get a smaller more aero efficient trailer. I have now owned four different trailers to haul the Caterham & Miata around and I think this time I got it right, at least for me.

It is a 7 x 14 Haulmark Low Hauler motorcycle trailer. It's roof is 20" lower than my old trailer and has a V nose to further reduce drag. It is only 64" tall inside so I can't stand up straight but then one needs to be humble and bow to the Se7en while attending to its needs in the trailer. ;)

The trailer is a used 2008 model that was purchased in Phoenix and used to move to Colorado Springs. It tows much better than my old one and the brakes seem to be more effective.

The V-nose looks to be a great place to stack a set of track tires while traveling.

The old one left for Kansas without me today, sold at a small loss but that was offset by keeping the Coleman generator set and the nitrogen bottle that came with it.

Looks nice Skip! I think some other members are using the same type of trailer for their Sevens and it works out well.

I like the looks and some of the construction details of Pete Brock's Orca model, but for the price difference you could probably travel around the world a couple of times! :) Looks like this:

Friend of mine briefly considered the Brock trailer, then did the math on how far he had to drive to offset a $10k price difference, never mine the reduced internal capacity...

Steep price to pay to look "swishy". Besides, trailer shouldn't have more "wow" than the contents

Hey Skip,

You can't go wrong with a Haulmark Low Hauler. I really considered one, then ended up buying a Cargo Express, 7x14 with V nose. The V nose was great but the extra height brought my gas mileage down to about 12MPG in my Dodge Dakota 4.7L Quad Cab.

Ended up selling the Cargo Express this Summer and had Brunton Auto build me an open single axle tilt bed made specifically for Se7ens. Justin Sims delivered it during LOG 28. Really happy with the open trailer and decent gas mileage but did have a towing cover made for the Stalker.

Had I purchased the Low Hauler first, I would most likely still have it. I think your V nose is the first that I have seen in a Low Hauler package...Great combination!!!

I also have a Haulmark Low Hauler, although mine is the "Edge", which doesn't come in a V-nose.

I would have preferred the V-nose, but when buying used your choices are somewhat limited.

I've towed with mine a couple times and find that it does pretty much what I expected. The flat front is topped with a roof line that is rolled back, as are the sides some they offer some slight aerodynamic advantages over the typical flat nose.

One thing I did do, which you may find helpful. After determining the location in which the car would best fit, I screwed a couple 1"x2" wood straping pieces to the floor of the trailer. I also marked the location of the inside of the left front tire on the door ramp.

Now it's easy to locate the correct spot for entering the trailer in the center as well as having the front tires "drop into" the correct spot. Doesn't allow the car to roll back or forward if loading on a grade either.

Good luck with the new piece.
