Skinny-Yes, that's small!

As the former safety cop for my local auto-x club I was surprised (shocked actually) at how lax (non-existent) the safety rules seemed to be for the spectators. There are people sitting on the edge of the course, people with their backs to the course talking, dogs hanging around! Yikes!

If I learned anything in my now ended auto-x career, cars can and will get everywhere. We had cars so far off course you had to see it to believe it: brakes failed, nerves failed, brains failed, accelerators stuck wide open, cars rolled, cars flipped, one car went off course, launched itself and impacted a neighboring tree 8' off the ground, several others slid way off and launched them selves over the retaining wall and onto an adjacent busy nearby highway. I am not saying that was the norm, but we had at least one memorable event a year in my 10+ years of auto-x. No deaths or serious injuries, a few cracked ribs etc.

We made every effort to keep the spectators safe, much to their disgruntlement on occasion ("Hey, I signed the waiver", etc.).

wow those sound great! but such a small track, are there no full size tracks in the area?

I England they call it an Auto Test or Gymkhana but here in the USA we tend to call any event in a parking lot or large area with cones an Autocross. Most auto-x her in the USA are more of a challange to the ability of the driver to operate their vehicle around a predetermined course in the fastest time without hitting any cones (usually adds 2 sec. for each cone hit) so it is more of a control test than a highspeed event usually.

Here is a clip that is one of my favorite of a GYMKHANA / AUTO TEST in England in a small parking lot....wish I had the drivers abilities.

Defination of a Gymkhana from Wikipedia:

"Gymkhana events are time/speed events events (four our purposes here,) in an automobile. There can be obstacles such as cones, tires, and barrels. The driver is expected to maeuver through the predetermined "track" performing many different driving techniques. What separates gymkhana from your traditional autocross event is that in gymkhana drivers are required to perform reversals, 180 degree spins, 360 degree spins, parking boxes, figure 8s and other advanced skills. Also drifting is encouraged where helpful/necessary. Really though, you can consider any event a Gymkhana which has a starting point, a finish line and some sort of "obstacle" to get through, around, or by, and is timed!"

What a surprise! I'm infamous.

Yes that is me racing on the biggest lot in Bozeman MT. It's on the MSU campus here and the lot is small but fun.

We live in a small town with small lots and most lots have little islands of green space in them that make them unusable.

Race season here starts in one month and I've got work to do on the car. I'd better get busy.

Dave - Glad to see you finally take credit for that fine drive in that awesome sounding Birkin!

It's funny how slow it looks when the camera is panned along keeping the car in the center. I'm hitting the limiter at one point in 2nd so it's not a really slow course.

It's a fun lot to drive in as it's a bit slickery and the big HP guys have trouble putting it down.

The sound is a DNA truck muffler with a 2 1/2" side exit set up. Glad you like it.
