Dick Brinks Caterham

Unless I am missing something, this is a great price for a beautiful looking 1988 Zetec powered Caterham, assuming it sells for the reserve. It has the De Dion suspension, 5 speed T-9 transmission, 4 wheel discs.

Caterham went to an enlarged foot box in '94, stiffened the chassis in '96 and redid some of the suspension settings (per"The Magnificent 7", by Chris Rees), so it's not state of the art Caterham, but still ....

I agree. Those wheels look nice also. If they're the Kodiak wheels I think they are, they go for over $400 a piece, plus $40 each for the black anodized centers. Plus they're strong and very lightweight.

sanity check please (before i seriously consider making a "reserve-ish" bid)...

1) i assume the title on this gem being "1964 Lotus" would equate to "no problems in registering/licensing in California" (since it should be smog/CARB exempt due to model year pre-'68 or whatever)... yes??;

2) and therefore there's no need for any need to try to apply California SB100 exemption, which are realistically only available in the morning one day a year and (as i've observed) get snapped up so fast as to become a critical hurdle for simpletons like me attempting to license a new 7 or an out-of-state 7;

3) and if #2 is correct, is my (and other CA-located 7 seekers) only practical option to either buy a used in-CA already-SB100 licensed car or anything else w/ a '64-ish title (like Dick's offering)??

thanks and regards... WM

Your most likely not going to have a problem if the title is "1964 Lotus".... you'd be just one in a line of thousands registering an out of state car. I'm sure they're on the lookout for 60s Cobras or GT40s etc... don't know about 7s.

But, if there's any paperwork that says 1988 on it you might have some explaining to do... also if you look like your smuggling drugs across the border while at the teller.

Google "California Caterham Club". Their website has info on registering Sevens.

Or, ask Dick Brink, he would probably know.

If it is already titled and registered in Texas as a '64, that should simplify things tho I don't know for sure. I do know that when I bought my Caterham (built in '98) it had been registered and titled in New Jersey, where I bought it, as a 60's vehicle`. There were zero problems switching everything to here in Ohio.

If the title from the previous state says it is a 1964 vehicle then their is no problem. The DMV will check the VIN to insure that it matches the title and ask for the value and collect the TAX due on the Vehicle for Calif and then ask for proof of insurance and then issue a temp registration and tell you the title will be mailed to you in about two weeks and hand you a set of plates for the car along with the proper stickers and your done. I know as this is how I was able to register my 7 here in SoCal without any hassles. No SMOG REQUIRED due to it being registered as a 1963 model.

California looks at it as a car that has already meet the requirements as a street vehicle if it is titled and registered in or from another state of the USA and is older than 1973. One thing that will cause them (the DMV) to ask questions about the car is the lack of a windshield or a very loud exhaust note (above 89db) and most DMV offices have a sound sensor near the place they inspect the VIN number of the vehicle (from a friend of mine who works at the DMV now). I trailer my car to the DMV and when asked why I did not drive it into the DMV I told them that I had just brought it into the state and had not unloaded it from the trailer yet. Another note is you have 0nly 30 days to register a car or vehicle that you bring into the state of Calif otherwise you have what they cal a penalty / fine for not registering the vehicle once it is in the state, I know this first hand due to having brought my Porsche into the state and not getting it registered within the thirty day window and had to pay the penalty which was about twice the amount of the registration. My friend told me that I should have registered it as a NON-OPERATIONAL vehicle and that would have saved me the penalty fees.

Hope this helps and just my observations and not to be taken as fact but has worked for me and my cars.

Just read the add for the car and it says thaty it originally came from Calif so it most likely has already been titled in the state and when they run the Vin it would come up on their system and show that it has been a titled car in the past if it was registered in Calif's DMV system. Something to check into...you could get the vin and for a small fee have the DMV run a history on it as a prepurchase option.

I got my Seven registered in 2003 as a '69 "Birkin Lotus Replica" based on previous California and Florida titles (I had copies). However, for whatever reasons the old title that was 5 years old did not show in their system (maybe because the VIN contained "B1RK1N" instead of "BIRKIN"). Anyway, it still went through, only the electronic gages in the dash raised some eyebrows for a '69 model year at inspection.

You should have towed a little trailer full of vacuum tubes and told them the dash computer is in there :D
