So what is your Tow Vehicle and Trailer look like?

Question for open trailer folks: Do you put a car cover on your Seven when towing? If so, are there any issues (excessive flapping, rubbing down of paint, etc.). Given the less-is-more philosophy of se7ens in general, the lightweight, minimal approach is more attractive to me, not that I'd refuse to ride/sleep in Kevin's full-tilt set up (as long as he was paying for the fuel:)).

I have an open trailer, and I've been through heavy rain with it - and it sucks.

it is difficult to fasten the tarp to withstand turbulence. Last time, I used two tarps, each rolled under one set of wheels (one under the front, one under the back), and overlapped and strapped in the middle.

We went through a massive storm coming back from Carlisle. Some water still got in because a little bit of the tarp got shredded.

There is no substitute for a closed trailer IMO. That's where I'm going next.

I had a tarp once over the car for a few hundred miles when my trailer was still open. Bad Idea. Although strapped down tight, the wind flapping rubbed nasty spots into the bare ali. The surface had something of a leopard skin after that trio and it took forever to polish out. Also, it rubbed the chrome plating off the top of headlight pods.

Fortunately, it did not much damage to the nose-cone gel coat.

Question for Kevin.

What is it like to pull two trailers and is it really legal even in GA..

I am just amazed at the length of that setup you have.

Hey Martin,

It has advantages and disadvantages.

Surprisingly it is not as hard to tow as you might think... You just have to remember that

you have another trailer behind the trailer behind you when you are weaving in and out of

traffic.... :D

Lane changing at night is the most challenging. I just turn on the signal and keep the hammer down until they flash their lights to let me over...

My wife will drive it during the day, but is reluctant to drive it at night.

The challenge is always remembering to only pull into areas you can pull out of.... backing

is a bit of a challenge. I have done it, but only for about 60 to 70 feet.

This can not be done on 2 ball mounts. It can be done 5th wheel then ball mount.

My Excursion tows in 5th wheel configuration.

As far as the legality of it, I have driven it from Georgia to Maine to Washington and all over California for 2 years and have never been pulled over.

That being said there are other factors involved that allow me to do this legally.

My rig falls under a differant set of laws then most people and I don't travel with the same

documents (IE drivers Lic.) as most.

I hope this answers your Q.

Cheers

Hi 7evin,

Yes it answers my questions but also makes me want to know more about the documents you have..maybe a commercial license (CDL with endorsements) and what does the 5th wheel dolly look like that the Excursion pulls look like.

You have peeked my curiosity now.

Martin, Its kind of that whole Red pill, Blue pill issue

I don't know how familiar you are with Constitutional law, but this issue involves

international treaties, commercial law and common law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Driving_Permit

Convention on International Road Traffic

Convention, with Annexes and Protocol, dated at Geneva September 19, 1949; ratification advised by the Senate of the United States of America August 9, 1950; ratified by the President of the United States of America August 17, 1950; ratification of the United States of America deposited with the United Nations August 30, 1950; proclaimed by the President of the United States of America April 16, 1952; entered into force March 26, 1952.

BY PROCLAMATION OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Now, the rabbit hole goes way deeper than it appears to from the surface....

But I will leave this issue for private disscussion between you and I off the forums.

If you haven't seen it yet and you would like to take a peek and have the ability to

measure reality with an open mind, Put on your 5 point harness and check out

Zeitgeist the Movie.

http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

Warning..... This will not make you sleep better at night.....:D

( if anyone wants a free copy of the DVD I have about 20 or so )

Now on to the mechanical side of things... :)

The hitching system I use is made by Pull-Rite

The PullRite eliminates sway and operates like an upside-down 5th wheel,

pulling your trailer from a point immediately behind the axle housing

when the equalizing bars are fit into the ball mount, the side-to-side movement

is locked out, so the trailer can no longer pivot on the ball.

I don't have any pics here with me in Costa Rica, but when I get back next week

I'll attach a few to this post.

You can go to http://www.pullrite.com/pullrite_works.htm

and see pics and a video. Its a pretty slick system.

Cheers

I had Brunton Automotive build me an open trailer specifically for Se7ens and I love it. Single axle, tilt bed and added the tool box.

That is a very sweet trailer. I really like the way your fenders on your trailer match the front

fenders of your car.

What does the trailer weigh?

I used to have a conventional enclosed trailer until I built this for my Stalker. It's finished now, with tool box on tongue and fenders in place.

I think the award for uniqueness defiantly belongs to you.... What a trick Trailer....

I'm sure it is probably light enough that you could tow it with your 7.

WestTex built one of a similar design a couple of years ago.

standard Q ..... what does it weigh?

7evin,

About 500 pounds plus what ever the weight of the junk I have in the tool box. I generally put heavier stuff (floor jack, tools and air tanks) in the back of the truck. Tie downs, car cover and light stuff in the box.

Thanks for the information 7evin I will look into all of it as I think I have 9 or 10 drivers license from different countries that are still valid and that would eliminate just about all of them from what I have just read.

By the way have a nice time in Costa Rica.
