Grounded-broken wing

I killed a cone at 6X MPH this weekend, and pulled the rivnuts out of the aluminum body on the right rear wing. The holes are cratered out, and I'm looking for solutions that don't involve new sheetmetal. Any best practices out there, both for the repair and perhaps for strengthening the body (this is my 2nd right rear wing in 2 seasons-I need a car that is 2" narrower, but only on the right side!)?

Depending on the severity of the cratering, you might be able to lightly tap the aluminum back down with a light mallet if you can get something something behind the panel to back it up.

 

As for preventing same in the future, I remember reading, I think on BlatChat, of people using Nylon bolts to hold the rear wings so that in the event of a strike, the bolts fail and don't tear out the rivnuts.

 

I know people have also fitted Nerf bars in front of the lower edge of the rear wings to deflect cones.

Have to say maybe you need to just move to the left 3 inches to keep from hitting the right rear fender with a cone :rofl: just needling you as I know how it can be. That is why I made my rear fenders the way I did (see photos below). As for fixing the pulled fender attachment points you can always go to a larger rivenut and then use plastic bolts in place of the steel bolts.

Box, the thread IS interesting.

 

After some feedback here and elsewhere, I am going to try the US (McMaster-Carr) version of the well-nuts with polycarbonate bolts on the front half of the wing and the stock set up on the back half. I've knocked the front half loose twice now, but done no damage to the body behind the back half. I would also like the wing to not come completely off when (not if) I hit a cone.

once this fix is done, put a deflector in front of the rear fender. don't have a pic, but basically a bar that goes from the body to the outside of the fender at 45 degrees to drive the cone out of the way and minimize impact forces.

The problem w/our cars is the rear wheel arch sticks out 12" or more from the side of the car. And it's behind the driver and out of sight . So it's easy to misjudge and hit something with it (at least that's my story and I'm stickin to it).
