windscreen and radar detector help needed

i just bought the carbon fiber windkick and installed it. it fit good except it didnt seem to be tight in the middle. there is a gap between the windkick and the body. did i miss something? does it need to be held down by more then the two outer bolts? also i bought a valentine one radar detector and am having a real hard time figuring where to mount it. should i mount in in the center and have both side mirrors, or on the passenger side so i can have one center rear view mirror? or somewhere else? i need the detector, i just had a speeding ticket in this car. how should i cut the carbon fiber so the radar sensor is not covered by the windkick? and if i want to get the center rear view mirror, do i have to drill holes in the carbon fiber and into the body?

Dose the valentine one radar detector have the ability to have a remote sensor. If it dose then you could mount it in the nose of the car and have the control and lights in the dash or just under the dash.

So did you get stopped in the 7 or are you just being careful to avoid a ticket.

Also you might want to make sure you have some type of EYE protection on while driving your car with only the aero screen and even check to see if it is legal in your state to drive with one.

Good point on the high mount with a remote.

Much better reception especially for the rear.

If you high mount it with the remote

I would put it in an enclosed plastic box.

That way officer friendly doesn't see it.

You could label the box with some kind of cool acronym like

F.L.I.R (Forward Looking infra-Red) That would raise some eye browse.... :D

alright ill try mounting it on the rollbar. what should i do about the cord coming from the detector? just tape it down to the rollbar? also i dont think it is long enough to reach the power outlet under the dash. is there a place in the back of the car that i could hook the power outlet to so i dont have to run the wire all the way up front. any suggestions on how i get a plastic box or something else to cover the detector. cause it would have to have two openings, one for the front and back

i looked for boxes online and had no luck so i got two button tops to put on the buttons in between the seats. i sanded down the button tops to make them more flat. i took a small aluminum plate and super glued it to the two buttons. then i plan to put velcro and the aluminum and detector to secure it down. i did this so i can take it off when i park it. i just hope the wheel on the back or the windkick dont block the signals.

Here are a couple of links.

As far as the wiring goes, they make tubing that has a sticky tape on one side that

you can route your wiring through. I would wire into the ign hot side of the switch

so that when you turn the key off the detector goes off.

here are some pics of what i did. if this doesnt work ill try mounting it on the rollbar. i already went for a ride with it on, it was sturdy above 90mph. now i am just waiting for the power outlet to come in the mail.

My Escort detector is hard to hear at speed, I have to have it in front of my eyes to see the lights. With the aeroshield I also wear ear protection to compound the lack of sound from the detector.

I have the Whistler Cruisader bike radar detector but only installed the main and auxiliary laser detector looking forward. I could not imagine what a rear detector should be good for.

I mean if a cop raises the radar (not to mention laser) gun from behind it will probably just serve as ticket notification device? Unlike the pickup of spurious radiation while approaching the trap you have really no reaction time when gunned down from behind.

Or is that only for the case that a cruiser is following you with radar turned on?

A light weight mount to see over the carbon fiber would also work. I had made one for my detector once. It was made with aluminum flat the width of the detector with (2)

90' bends. To raise it to the proper height. I had velcro on the top and bottom of the mount to match velcro on the panel top as well as on the bottom of the detector. I was able to remove the detector when it rained or I was away from the car. I kept a Ziplock bag in the car for rain storage.

Does carbon fiber block radar? If not you could mount it on that center support tab of the windscreen. That would keep it dry when driving in the rain.

It's my understanding that carbon fiber blocks radar and some other electromagnetic radiation. That's one reason that track transponders clearly state that you shouldn't mount them behind metal or carbon fiber. I think fiberglass might be ok.

well i did the first part of the wiring. i ran it straight down to the trans tunnel and ran it along where the leather meets the carpet. i ran it all the way under the dash and tuck it behind some wires for now(because im waiting for the power outlet in the mail). i bought the concealed display and was thinking of mounting it where i put it in the pic. i would drill a small hole into the body under the carbon fiber tab of the windkick so i can run the cord to the concealed display. i am probably just gonna use some double sided tape to keep the display in place. i never drive my car in the rain, i actually check the radar before every drive, so nothing will ever get wet. to me it looks nice and will work for the back laser, but i just hope it will not be blocked by the windkick. i dont think it will. if i cant see the display in the daytime, valentine 1 offers a headphone hookup that i can put in my helmet to hear it.

That looks much better...

I agree with you on the laser detectors... Not worth much.

On our Excursion we run the Escort 9500ci... It was worth every penny I paid for it.

It jams laser both front and rear..... And it works... I have been hit with laser over 15

times and no takers.... It is so funny to see the cop holding the gun on you...

He will just keep holding on you till you blow by... Then they lower the gun and give

you this weird look like... WTF ... I laugh every time... Some times I even wave at them...

I Love It...

In the Charger and the Corvette we ran the Blinder unit http://www.blinder.net/

2 years in a row in the Fireball Run http://www.fireballrun.com (won it last year)

My wife got hit with laser in excess of 100 mph (Bad Girl)

She never even let off..... (bigger ball then me)

Mojito will get the Blinder Extreme. Can't say enough about their unit.

My 2 cents worth

i bought the concealed display and was thinking of mounting it where i put it in the pic. i would drill a small hole into the body under the carbon fiber tab of the windkick so i can run the cord to the concealed display. i am probably just gonna use some double sided tape to keep the display in place. valentine 1 offers a headphone hookup that i can put in my helmet to hear it.

I use the remote display in all my vehicles except the se7en. There I use the remote audio with a earbud in my left ear so I can hear the beep. I don't use the remote display because the V1 is mounted right in the center of the dash. It's upside down, but I got used to the arrows being reversed. I used a visor clip on mount that comes with the V1 to clip it on to the hood.

In the pic you can see the detector in the center, and the remote audio just below the dash on the left, next to the silver frame tube.

I generally mount the remotes with velcro tape so they can be removed. You could mount the remote at the far left of the windkick, and run a wire up to it without drilling a hole in the dash. You only have to look at it when the beep sounds.

The remote display and the remote audio both can mute the sound.

how would i not have to drill a hole. where do i have to run the wire? is it possible to have the remote display and the remote audio?

I am not familiar with the dash of your car, I just thought it might be possible to "hide" a wire on the left side, and escape drilling a hole.

According to the Valentine 1 manual, you can wire the V1 to the "Direct Wire Power Adapter" then to the "Remote Audio" then to the "Concealed Disply, so you can have them all working together. Or you can go from V1 to Remote Audio, to Direct Wire Power then to the concealed display.

It appears that you are using the cigarette lighter power supply. I do not know if you can wire both adapters with that power supply, you will have to check with Valentine.

In any event you will have a great system. I am a huge fan of the V1 arrows. I get nervous driving my wife's car without the arrows, is he ahead of me?, is he behind me and catching up?. I just hope someday Valentine will add an automute and maybe GPS. The reason my wife doesn't have a V1 is that she insists on automute, and can't be bothered to press a mute button.
