The more I think about this, the more I am thinking of running a brookland style windscreen as opposed to a full on one. Reasons:

- less drag

- I will be wearing a helmet w/ earplugs 24/7 anyway due to concerns about hearing loss, safety and my bald head. :p

-I will install an intercomm & stereo between my helmet and passengers.

-I don't mind a few bugs on my helmet, hehe:

Here's a pic of Jack Banker's Stalker with Brooklands. One of these days I plan to do the same.

I've only ridden in my own Ultralite and another Ultralite before I purchased so I can't speak much about the SS cars. I did see a few of them at Run'N'Gun and they are good looking cars but I really prefer the look of the 2K. I am very partial though to the F20C drivetrain and was planning on building a Toyota AE86 powered by one when the 7 bug bit. It is an amazing motor and really a marvel of engineering. I saw a few mentions of the torque band and wanted to say that with 1200 lbs tied to a F22C, there are no torque issues. It's not going to pull away from a stop light in 6th gear, but it has no issues with a 2nd gear start and will easily drive around at 40 mph in 6th all day long. When you want to drive fast, you are going to want to shift but that's part of the fun.

I don't know what the pedal cluster sizing is on the SS but it is very small on the 2K. The steering wheel is often pretty low on the 2K as well. You have 2 options, below the dash brace or above it. The first car I road in was below the bar and it put the wheel close to your legs. Above the bar is pretty high and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are going to sit pretty high in the car. My car is apparently the only 2K with an adjustable steering column. Brian did some special engineering to allow for the column to go up or down a couple inches. The dash bar is braced with an upside down U to maintain control. If anyone is interested I could take some pictures if you wanted to try and build something similar. I'm very glad my car has this feature as it really puts the wheel in the perfect position for me.

I'm not sure what the SS uses for suspension, brakes, rear end, etc but the 2K has a very strong setup. The willwoods are easily capable of locking up the tires if I get overly aggressive with my braking. The suspension setup is very well engineered and easily adjusted. The rear end is very solid (WRX setup) and can be built using STi parts if more power is added. My only complaint is I wish the car had 5x114.5 (or whatever pattern 240SX/350Z/etc use) instead of 5x100. You can find 5x100 wheel setups but I'm a fan of the used market with wheels and the other bolt pattern would open up a lot more options for me.

I'll throw in another vote for "ride in both if you can". I saw your post on the Yahoo user's group but CT is a long way from OK. If you were closer I'd definitely give you a ride though. Regardless of which car you pick, I'm sure you'll be happy.

Its actualy quite easy to change the front wheels to a 5x114 bolt pattern. All you need to do is change the rotor hat (or drill new holes in the existing one) and thread in new studs and you will be good to go. I am currently running 5x114 fronts with 5x100 rears though my rear wheels are dual drilled so I can switch to the STI 5x114 setup if needed. I've posted more info about my wheel setup at http://www.rahulnair.net/blog/2010/04/16/setting-up-a-seven-wheels-and-tires/

I'd like to see your adjustable steering set up

I'll try to get some pics of it tonight and post them up. If you don't see something from me in a couple of days, please hound me about it. Things are very crazy here and I'm not responsible for my own forgetfullness...

I've started reading your blog and I'm seriously considering this. My car has some old Azenis that are not up to the task and its time for some new wheels, just because. I am a huge fan of the Racing Dynamic wheels (been considering them for the Mini) but its not the look I want for the 7. I also like the idea of moving to the Sti hubs. I'll need to replace my rear rotors as the builder used an old set of WRX ones with Willwood calipers and they only partially grab the rotor.

I posted a comment in your blog post about having a bolt fall out of the rear end. My car is the black 2KR with the double side bars you linked in another post.

Front end is easy to change to 5x114.3 set up just change the rotor hat and install lugs. The rear hubs are a little harder you can change to a STI rear end. The other option is to locate the large 5x100 hubs. There are two sizes of rear Subaru hubs with 5x100 pattern. The larger hubs has room to drill the 5 x114.3 I think it is in the 2003 or 2004 years with larger hubs. Millennium auto might be able to point you in the right direction they deal in slot of Subaru stuff

I currently have the s2k that was in this thread sitting in my garage for some updates. A guy in Houston is the new owner.

I have a used s2k that I will be putting up for sell shortly. I have a few items that I would like to fix plus I would like to enjoy for a little while.

I will be selling for around 22800.00 or 23500.00 with trailer. I will get a better picture and post in FS section but if anyone has an interest let me know.

Frankly I'd hold out for either a Genuine Lotus Seven or a Caterham.

Colleague recently bought a one owner series 3 Lotus Seven with the 1600 Kent engine & down draught carb, a whopping 84 Hp.. maybe. But it's a blast to drive, despite the wee motor (which IMO is lotsa fun despite the lowly specs) and as a one owner 'genuine' (not clone of a clone) car he paid $30K for it. Likely he can sell it on for $5k more whenever he wants to.

Besides, all the visual proportions are exactly right, there's No mistaking it for a Clone Or being embarassed/having to mumble when some kid asks you what is it Mister?.. ever :-).

Danillo,

We try not to get too negative about other 7 type cars on this site (or pretentious about pedigree).

When it comes to price... a lot of us go for performance (and dare say looks) over heritage. Probably something Colin would appreciate.

The main thing is we all share a passion for these bare bone cars and their basic design.

Plus, we're commenting on a year old thread and it would be more interesting to know if Bster13 ever got one of these.

...and were not going to hold it against him any more than I think most people hold our clones against us S2K owners. I've had several "original" numbers matching type classic cars and it really isn't important when your driving them unless you have "that" mindset. As for embarrased, why should I be when the people asking me what it is are usually drooling on it! LOL.

Given that the current Caterhams share zero parts w/original Lotus Sevens, we are all driving clones. But this is an old debate, many prev posts, and the all-inclusiveness of this site is well-established at this point.
