new owner introduction and questions

Hello All,

I would like to introduce myself to the board.

I am the lucky new owner of the S2K Ultralite recently posted for sale by afs.

I'm sure this board will prove to be a very valuable resource -- I've learned quite a bit already.

 

Later I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions about suspension setup, etc., but I have a few more immediate questions:

 

1)Title and registration, and State inspection: originally titled in Ohio as 2006 World Class Motorsports S2K Ultralite Roadster. I'll need to transfer title to Texas. I have no experience with registering this kind of car in Texas, and am looking for some guidance from some of you who have already been there. Any helpful advice or pitfalls to avoid?

 

2) Insurance: My other vehicles are currently covered by the Hartford. Unfortunately they have declined to cover the S2K. I will try State Farm, and then Grundy, Hagerty, and Zurich. Any other suggestions?

 

3) Closed transport, Columbus to Houston: So far I've gotten bids from Demoise, Intercity, and G & L. All are at least 2 wks from p/u. Any great recommendations here?

 

4) Outdoor car covers: Any idea where to find one for this car? If the car can stay outside occasionally it would be very helpful.

I'm in Utah, and bought my car in Houston. After a bit of searching, the seller located Sterling Auto Transport and driver "Tom" at 480-313-1445. The transport price was VERY reasonable, and top-notch in every regard. The car was loaded by the seller, and unloaded by me, with nobody touching it in between. My car, along with an extra engine, body parts, 12 extra wheels/tires and various other spares, was alone in Tom's two-car Featherlite enclosed trailer. It was delivered in only about a day and a half.

 

I'd be wary of any exposed trailers, or multi-car trailers where the driver may have to load and unload your car in order to make other pickups or deliveries.

I have insurance with State Farm. I had a lot of discussions with them, and they with their underwriters, but eventually they came through. I do have all my cars and my homeowners with them ,as well as an umbrella policy. I wanted "standard" insurance, as a daily driver.

Hagerty or others of that ilk should be willing to insure it, with typical restrictions

 

I have a tonneau, not a car cover. It fits on the snaps in the rear that the trunk cover uses, then additional snaps around the sides and hood. here are couple pics without and with the tonneau ( sans snaps). I do not have a pic of the tonneau after I added the snaps.

I here Texas is easier than most states... I'm sure someone from there will chime in soon.

 

Farmers Insurance got me a 3rd party insurer for daily use and still under my umbrella (have everything with them). It was kind of expensive for the little I drove so changed to Hagerty.

 

I have a generic style car cover from Pep Boys that I use in the garage. It's not form fitting so probably not good for outside (with any wind).

State farm cost me about 600 a year for agreed value policy of 30 k. I havey home and autos with them.

Registration can vary even in the state. You will need to get the car inspected and get a form from the inspection place that you will take to your local license place with proof of insurance. What your inspector will require varys with districts. Some Require you to hook to OBDII and you can have mo codes showing others do a sniff test others do nome of the above. Houston is more strict due to smog Dallas is tougher too. Might go visit with local inspection guy to see what he expects. Might ask some horrid shops they usually know the more slack inspectors.

To register in Harris County, you need to get a safety inspection sticker and ask for a green sheet. Since the car is already titled, you should be able to take your current title and green sheet with proof of insurance to the County Tax Assessor to get your Texas plate.

Since the vehicle comes from another state you might have to get it weighed. I purchased a truck from Nevada in Jan that was already titled I was required to have it weighed. I don't know if this applies to cars.

I don't know if you've had the car shipped yet but definitely look for an enclosed trailer setup and if you can afford to have your car shipped by itself you will be best off. When I bought my M3 it was shipped from NC to OK for $1200. It was on a double car trailer (by itself) and hauled behind a 1 ton dualie Dodge truck. The car was untouched from NC to OK. I was in contact with the driver the entire time and he was very helpful.

 

I've got a big policy with AllState but they wouldn't cover the car. My agent sells Hagerty and set me up with them. The cost isn't too bad, I think its around $600 a year and doesn't have any ridiculous restrictions.

 

I don't know the process for tagging in TX but it is definitely possible. My car came from Tyler, TX and was tagged.

I'm set up to have Demoise Trucking ship the car. The ultralite won't be alone, but it will be on the truck toward the end of a run. They use only enclosed trailers and only their own trucks. I got a good vibe from them, and feel pretty good about the plan.

 

Grundy is insuring the car. It's a limited use policy so I can't use it to commute to work, but happily there is no milage limit.

Scott, make sure you speak with the driver of the truck. If its going to be a on a trailer with other cars, he might need to pull it off to remove other cars and then put it back on. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but the pedal cluster is very tight, the seats aren't exactly roomy, and if the pedals aren't adjusted right he could end up losing control of the car trying to get it on/off the trailer. It's not to say he won't be able to handle it, just that its not a typical car.

if ur looking for good insurance i recommend safeco. im setup for $44,000 agreed value and i pay $480 a year (im 26 years old) and its the only car i have with the company. this is not the daily driver policy but it works great!

Unfortunately insurance is state-specific premium rate filing plans. Safeco will not touch our cars in some states.

 

State Farm is usually reliable for insuring sevens as regular use in nearly all states. Hagerty, Grundy and the other specialist classic car policy insurers are also good. Chubb insurance will insure in nearly all states under their masterpiece insurance product.
