Any recommendations for really loud horns?

One of these three from FIAMM:

66020 - two plastic horns + electric compressor

66025 - two "metal" horns + electric compressor

66030 - three plastic horns + electric compressor

Any of the above run about 25-30 bucks, plus shipping. I bought a 66030 using Amazon (because the 66030 it was the cheapest of the three when I was searching), but it is not yet installed. I have heard these before, and they are effective. All of the above claim 134 dB. Weight penalty is about three pounds.

:iagree:

Supertones. At least twice the volume of whatever Caterham supplies in their cars. Same current draw as I recall.

There's nothing like a nice pair of hooters.

I'm a fan of this horn, often used on motorcycles:

I've had one of those on my Caterham for three years. It wasn't really loud enough for me. It died last weekend and thus began an odyssey of horns that just ended today.

My Miata has Italian air horns with 13" & 15" metal horns and a separate compressor. It is truly loud and has literally saved my life. I had obtained another set a few months ago from a friend. They are unused but at least 5 years old. I decided Monday was the time to install them.

The first problem was where to put them and how to mount them. I tried a number of different options and actually made mounts for three locations. The final location was beside the engine on the driver (cold) side down low at the lower frame tube level. The first mount I made for this location didn't get the angles right as I was mounting the horns to the underside of the passenger foot well which is a 30 degree angle off vertical.

Murphy was in attendance and things were going so badly that I had to walk away from the project several times. Parts and tools would disappear when I needed them. Working space was so tight I have cuts on my hands and arms. Coolant was dripping into my eyes as I had to remove the hose to the coolant catch tank and drain it but it kept dripping for several days.

I finally got the horns mounted on the third day and started on mounting the compressor. Finding space for it close to the horns was a challenge. Once mounted it was proving extremely difficult to run the hoses to the horns. More cursing and bleeding and another walk away.

When I finally got the compressor in and plumbed and wired I gave it a test. The horns honked but not nearly as loud as on the Miata. I had a look and decided that I needed to put larger inside diameter hoses between the compressor and horns as well as add another relay between the Caterham relay and the horns with larger wires. Getting the larger stiffer hoses in required removing everything and finding a way to get the hoses in place.

When I tested again, the compressor would spin but no sound from the horns. WTF! I first checked to see if the polarity of the pump was reversed and making it run backwards. It was wired correctly. I then looked to see if one of the hoses had come off, they hadn't. I then tried the system again. Still no sound but when I let off the horn button, the compressor kept running. Tried the button but no change so under the car I go and unplug the compressor ground. Applying 80 psi from the shop compressor also produced no sound. Almost to the point of throwing tools and cursing profusely, I had to walk away again.

Later that evening I went back to the shop and did some electrical trouble shooting. I found that the new relay had changed from a normally open condition to a normally closed and permanent condition. I also found that applying 12v directly to the compressor motor produced nothing. Nothing else to do but walk away again.

Today I went shopping for new horns. I found another Ear Cannon under a different name, Bad Boy, at Autozone so I decided to use it. This horn is packaged under about a dozen different names.

When I got home and back into the shop I decided to test the old horn that had failed on Sunday. I shot a little WD40 in the intake and applied 12 volts. It worked. Since I hadn't opened the blister pack on the new horn I decided to use the original. After removing the compressor and air horns and re-routing the wiring I found the mount for the Ear Cannon and proceeded to mount it on the car. When I tested it, it was back to whirring and making noise but very little horn sound. You may notice that the intervals between walk aways is getting shorter. I walked again and had some lunch.

Now all that is left is to use the new Bad Boy horn. First I tested it with the circuit it will be using, with it hanging from the wires before mounting it. It worked once but not on the second try. The torque of its compressor had twisted it a bit and pulled a wire from its crimp connector. Fixed that and another test, this time successful so I went ahead and mounted it, cleaned up the area and got the car off the jackstands. I haven't driven the car yet but plan to this evening or tomorrow.

The above does not come close to describing all the various events that caused delay and frustration. I estimate I have spent at least 20 hours on this project. I could have R & R'd the engine at least four times in that many hours.

Below is a picture of the Ear Cannon and the other air horns.

Sorry about the long rant but I do feel better now.

Looks like we need to commission Grover to produce 1042 Organtones in Carbon fiber. For that matter, how about an all carbon Nathan P5 or Leslie Supertyfon?

You'll know your horns are loud enough when the roadkill scurries for the ditch...
