blubarisax
So, I pulled the trigger on the Sadev sequential gearbox this morning. I ordered it from Mog-Racing.com in Germany. The same place I got the Nitrons from. They were great to deal with. Apparently, they are now a Sadev distributor and have created a true plug-and-play setup for a Caterham. The kit included the wiring harnes, GCU (gear control unit) and gear position indicator. MOG-Racing had a Sadev (with the 1:1 final ratio) in stock so it won't be long. So... this leaves my Caterham 6-Spd up for grabs, in addition to the motor. I plan on explaining to the wife that it's nearly an automatic, no need to use the clutch or even let up on the gas to upshift!

blubarisax
funny you would ask, Ben did offer to build me a CSR today for the Cosworth engine.

yellowss7
Darn, I was trying to convince myself that I could use the extra 25 hp to keep up with you guys. Someone got a great deal. Keep me in mind when you get ready to trade the new one in next year. :jester: Tom
Croc
funny you would ask, Ben did offer to build me a CSR today for the Cosworth engine. uh oh....I smell a temptation coming on.... Karl - you know you will not be able to resist! So if you have an R400 SV and you replace the engine, transmission, seats, chassis, etc....do you still have an R400?
blubarisax
I tried to talk Ben into giving me your new car and just painting a silver stripe on mine for you...no luck. I am expecting to end up with something like an R500 in with a wide body (SV). My wife would complain too much if I got a new car when I already had a new car. She will hardly notice the extra HP and "automatic transmission"

blubarisax
Here are a few pictures of the progress of the Cosworth Duratec 2.3L build. I'm told it will be done next week. http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac336/blubarisax/Cosworth%20Duratec%20Build/YDEngine4.jpg http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac336/blubarisax/Cosworth%20Duratec%20Build/YDEngine3.jpg http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac336/blubarisax/Cosworth%20Duratec%20Build/YDEngine2.jpg http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac336/blubarisax/Cosworth%20Duratec%20Build/YDEngine1.jpg Edited March 12, 2011 by blubarisax
yellowss7
Karl, that engine looks HUGE. Are you sure it will fit in your Caterham?:jester: If that ain't Auto Porn, I don't know what is. Keep it coming:flag: Tom
blubarisax
I'm told the 2.3L Duratec is only 10mm taller than the 2.0L that came out of the car!!!
Croc
Wow - I own one of those puppies? I never saw my engine looking like that - instead it was just one big sexy lump! ummm....I am talking about the engine Karl - not you sorry! I'm told the 2.3L Duratec is only 10mm taller than the 2.0L that came out of the car!!! That sounds too small an increment? I understood the 2L cannot fit in an S3 chassis (or a Birkin for that matter) as it is too tall by 2 inches?
yellowss7
Croc, I thought the 2L Duratec does fit into the S3 chassis. Doesn't Alaskossi have one in his? And Isn't Ron's R500 a 2L in the S3? Tom
blubarisax
Yes Tom, the 2L is the standard motor for all new US Caterhams. The block for the 2.0 and 2.3 are exactly the same except for the additional deck height. All the ancillaries are the same, i think.
Sean
I understood the 2L cannot fit in an S3 chassis (or a Birkin for that matter) as it is too tall by 2 inches? My S3 has the 2.3, which j-u-s-t fits. I had to remove the decorative c/f cover to get the bonnet on, but that thing was just adding weight anyway. Alaskossie
Yes, I also have the 2.3 Duratec, dry-sumped, in my S3 Caterham chassis. I opted for a Reverie carbon fiber cam cover with no oil filler cap on top, which reduced the overall height a bit. No clearance problems with the block, but we did have to re-fashion the upper c/f airbox fasteners so that they would not interfere with the bonnet. Sean
Oops, I forgot - like Tom's, mine is also dry sumped (standard on Cosworth 250-spec 2.3). I had to modify the oil filler cap to be flush with the top of the cam cover and trim some material from the air filter mounting tabs. Unlike Tom's, I have the short input shaft on my T9, which locates the engine just a bit further rearward, necessitating modification of the TPS to avoid fouling the pedal box, and removing material from one side of the bellhousing due to interference with the driver's side footbox. Wow, I guess I left out quite a bit, but they were all pretty simple changes. Thanks for the reminder, Tom! edit - Tom's car is better looking than mine, particularly under the bonnet. The cam cover in particular looks fantastic, and is a functional replacement piece rather than an add-on. Edited March 13, 2011 by Sean

Ok I was brain dead this morning - I typed 2L when I should have typed 2.3L. Either way it is moot as others with S3's have popped up to say they shoehorned the mother in there. Separately though I do recall Dick Brink telling me 2 years back that a Birkin will not take a 2.3L as it is too tall. I guess a Birkin is more svelte than an S3? Croc
Completely off topic but this link will be irrestible honey to Karl to open his checkbook again :jester: I have a cam cover on order from Reverie but it is yet to arrive. I had no idea that Tom (Alaskossie) used it on his car. http://www.reverie.ltd.uk/home.php
blubarisax
Not off topic at all. I looked at the Reverie, but am working on an old school option. http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac336/blubarisax/Cosworth%20Duratec%20Build/duratech1.jpg http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac336/blubarisax/Cosworth%20Duratec%20Build/duratech2.jpg Edited March 14, 2011 by blubarisax
