HankMauel
I know for about 2/3rds of the country this is going to hurt, but it is lovely in California...about 65 degrees...and I just couldn't bear to keep the 7 locked up until springtime. I attach a couple of photos taken from the cockpit...gauges, a country road in Auburn and the view we get everytime we come home (looking east towards the Sierras and Lake Tahoe. Ignore the date stamp, it's a month behind. For the frozen part of the country, take heart, your spring will come and then you can rub my nose in it! MHKflyer52
Yep that is the way we roll out here in California. I do not even have a top for my 7. Today in Ventura it was 72 degrees and very sunny with clear skies. Tommorow it is going to be 80+ degrees and clear skies.

Jon W.
This is how we roll in PA: No top, no sides, and very little feeling in the extremities. It was a little chilly at 75 mph.
MHKflyer52
Jon W., That is one nice Clone Atom. I can remember sitting in your car when you were building it in your garage. Sure has come a long way and from what I can see your craftsmanship has become even better with time. I think your car looks better than the real Atom but that is just my belief. Sure looks good. jimrankin
I hate to rub it in (not really!!) but had the S2K out on sunday because it was well over 70 and sunny and I just couldn't resist one more blat before I pull it apart for some mods. Crusin' on 280 and then over to the coast in a T shirt with my sweatshirt tucked away under the passenger side belts, where it stayed for the whole ride. Tried to burn up all the fuel in the cell but even nailing the hell out of it and driving reved up in 4th instead of 6th still had a gallon or two left to drain when I got home. I lived in the far frozen north as a kid so I feel for you "snowbound" 7'ers. Have faith, spring will eventually come and you can make fun of us Californians driving around topless with an unmerciful sun baking us at 110 degrees. LOL. turboeric
I officially hate all you Californians! I spent 3 hours yesterday dealing with 6 inches of snow on top of glare ice on my 1/4 mile long, steep driveway. That was just so we could get the Subaru (with 4 good, winter tires) out onto the road! Blech!

Did you take the road over Crystal Springs reservoir to Half Moon Bay and then terrorize Highway 1 or did you play on Skyline? I grew up in the SF Bay Area and my folks still live in Menlo Park. The back roads on the coast mountains are fun...La Honda, Saratoga, over the back way to Santa Cruz via Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Felton. Great fun in a sports car! And for the folks who "envy" us out here this time of year, remember, we have to put up with 30 million plus bozos and bozettes, most of whom have absolutely no comprehension of vehicle dynamics, trail braking or clipping the apex of a turn. Their highest driving skill levels top out at 1) Cell phones & texting 2) putting on make-up 3) reading a novel resting on the steering wheel while commuting and 4) Oral sex, while driving! That one gives a whole new meaning to"Multitasking"!

On Saturday I took 17 to Canepa Motors to have a look at the motorsports museum there. From there I drove over to felton and took empire grade to 236 and took the long way back to hwy 9. It was a beautiful day. I had a light fleece on-even up in high elevation.
jimrankin
Hank, All the great roads you mentioned have now become overpatroled speed traps due to the Rice Rockets mixing it up with about 10,000 out of shape Lance Armstrong wanabee's riding side by side down in 21st gear. Sunday was nice on 280 and over to Pacifica but bailed on using Hwy 1 as it was already slow. Did as much backroad as I could but was really just out burning up fuel and enjoying some "open car" time. Had hoped everyone was home getting ready for the Superbowl but I guess nobody cared since both our bay area teams sure weren't "super" again this year. Back in the 70's the Highway Patrol used to make their last run over 92 at just after midnight on weeknights. By 1:30 AM I'd be up there in my Amped up MGA 1600 (later my Jag) hunting up someone to run with from 280 to HMB or up Skyline all the way out to 9 and back. Gone are those days, tickets and cars both got too expensive and I got older if not a whole lot wiser.
HankMauel
Ahhh...the Good Old days! Too bad it's all gone. I guess a good portion of those 30 million clowns I mentioned earlier have had their way with our State. Your comment about the bicyclists fits up here, too, but not as severe as yours sounds. Still, they are the first to scream and yell when they think their "rights" have been compromised on the road...after they disregard all the traffic laws. From what I've seen here in Auburn, fully 95%+ blow stop signs as if they don't exist. And the "parade" of 2-3 abreast is standard procedure up here...ever since the Amgen went through here last year. We're going to have to form our own state, with all drivers required to pass a rigorous "at speed" driving school a la Bondurant, Russell, etc. and have their cars thoroughly inspected for road worthiness. If I were "King of the Forest"....... Maybe we should head north to the Booneville area and work over the roads to Elk and Highway 1 north. Not quite as overpopulated as SF bay area. Mondo
I once got a ticket for not coming to a complete stop, at a 4 way stop, on my bicycle... it was at the base of a hill that I was going to go up. I had slowed down to about walking speed and saw the cop (who was the only car around and parked about 50 yards away). I could see ticketing cyclists blasting down the hill... actually think that was why he was there. Oh well, went to court to make sure it wouldn't affect my car insurance. jimrankin
Met the owner of Blastolene at the track last year (he and his dad have a handbuilt 7) and he is an "ex" californian who moved to southern Oregon. He said it was like moving back in time to the "old" California. Since half of the people from Oregon that I've met over the years were also from California originally that is probably true, took the old NORCAL mindset with them and left to take it where it wasn't being strangled. Let's just hope for Oregons sake that the next wave of Ex-Ca's does as well by them. We have some big problems here but it's still a great place, just not quite what it used to be. Or maybe I'm just gettin' too old. LOL.
twobone
Two years ago, I was on business in NorCal and took a full day off and rented a Corvette. With the help of local Porsche guys, I drove some of the best roads with some great guys. So jealous of NorCal drivers! Here is a link to the pics and story. Sun up to sun-down with the "hammer down"! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/511871-california-guys-need-some-p-car-guy-travel-advice-3.html I was not a big fan of the Corvette, but it sure made some good sounds at full throttle. HankMauel
Well guys, I did "pay" for it after all. Immediately after that weekend, NorCal entered into a REAL winter that has just ceased, hopefully. We have had rain, snow...even our own tornadoes which I realize do not hold a candle to what has occurred in the midwest lately...but nonetheless a real exciting spate of weather. Our local high school grads sat through a downpour last Saturday. They normally sweat in 85+ degree sunshine. So, the Seven has been quitely sitting in the garage, Battery Tendered, since that first blat. Another week or so and I'll be "on the road again".:driving:
jimrankin
We have been in tha same boat down here in the Bay Area, no summer yet! I did drive the S2K to work yesterday, just to celebrate the 10 day forcast of NO RAIN!! A bit damp with fog at 6AM but cleared off nicely later. I guess were getting "payback" for all that California Weather bragging we did a while back. It's the second week of June and most of the snow pack is still frozen solid up in the Sierras. One of my friends from out in the valley said he is usually on his second irrigation water call by now instead of waiting for the ground to dry out enough to get around on his tractor. LOL. Texas and Arizona are dried out and burning, half the mid west is flattened, the east cost is too hot and we are pushing three months late for summer. Not that we can do much about it but maybe Al Gore is right, the sky is falling! Better weather and great driving wishes for everyone!
