Hamburg is a great city to visit with fine dining, beautiful scenery and many wonderful museums. Two of the best, for the mechanically minded at least, are, 1, the Miniatur Wunderland, a fantastic model train, and now airport, facility, and 2, the Prototyp Museum, dedicated to mostly German built cars, especially Porsche and VW.

I have visited both several times over the years. I heartily recommend them both as a great way to spend a long afternoon.

Also, for those of a certain age, those who appreciate history or those with an appreciation of the significance of the Beatles in modern culture, a visit to the new (it opened just last year) Beatles museum, Beatlemania, is a must. The museum chronicles the history of the band with a significant collection of memorabilia and documentation, focusing on their time spent in Hamburg in the early 60s.

All are worth a visit.

We've all seen elaborate train sets... but an airport?

In Leon Spain just up from the train station they have a bronze map/model of the city. When I saw it I thought it was a very cool idea.

When I was traveling in England in the mid 70's I visited the MG Factory in Abington, England. Outside of Abington their was a small village that we walked through and after touring the village we where directed to a scale model of the village that was built at the begining of World War II as the village figured that if they were bombed they would have a exact replica of their village to rebuild their village. The whole model was built so one could walk down the streets which where about two feet wide and the building roofs were at about bet height, wish I had more information about that village as it had a small auto musiuem in it and I can not for the life of me remember it's name. The model airport reminded me of that village and their scale model of the village. Sure wish I could remember the name of that village as I would like to see it again if and when I get back to England.

Someone must know about the model village discussed by MHKflyer52. It sounds facinating.

Talking to my wife and after showing her the clip of the model airport she thinks the name of the place was Baconfield or something like that and she says it was about an hours drive to the place after we left Abington....sure was a longtime ago....sure would be neat to go see it again if we get back to England someday.

That could be it....I just do not remember it being an amusment park back in the early 70's but then again things do change. I need to show it to my better half as she has a lot better memory than I...just don't tell her that.....
