slomove Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 No idea who built that, but found the link on Blatchat
WestTexasS2K Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 That is so cool. There was a company in Europe somewhere that building a Supercar completely out of wood. It's been a few years back. It is amazing they can shape wood like that.
DeanG Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Pretty simple actually. Check out stripper built canoes.
turboeric Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 That's gorgeous. Wood is the original composite - a carbohydrate fibre embedded in a polymer matrix. You wouldn't want to drive it in a rainstorm 'though.
locost7018 Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 My 17' cedar strip kayak does quite well in the water. I'm sure he (or she) has covered the wood all around with fiberglass cloth and resin and then coated it with spar varnish. It would be quite waterproof then. Although rocks and someone else's bumper is another story all together. Wood encapsulated in fiberglass is surprisingly light and strong. Russ
solder_guy Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 That looks heavy though ... if it hit a cone would it splinter??
slomove Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 (edited) ... if it hit a cone would it splinter?? You bet. I would guess it is quite light weight. But that is apparently not the point. It is just very pretty and outstanding workmanship. Edited June 2, 2011 by slomove
JohnCh Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 According to the post on BlatChat, the car weighs 20kg more than an S3, so not too big a delta. I'd love to find more picture of this car. The smooth transition from the top of the scuttle to front of the rear wing looks fantastic. -John
Ian7 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Imagine discovering a structural bamboo tube chassis under those skins.... LOL
Tralfaz Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Few Thoughts... Is it a very well done 'Locust' ? http://www.locust.org.uk/about/about.htm There was a Supercar called the 'Splinter'.... Not sure what ever came of it. http://www.joeharmondesign.com/ There was a Picture around some years ago that I can't seem to find right now of a Caterham/Lotus S3 that had been bodied similarly to the one in the Picture by/for West System Epoxy... FWIW I have been thinking of doing something like this as an exercise for my Cabinetmaking Business.
