soareyes
Anyone know if the NC's (2006 and up) have more, less, or the same legroom as the NA's and NB's? I haven't sat in the newer cars but have driven my brother's 1996 Miata and I wished that it had a bit more legroom.

They have thinner seat backs which give you a little more leg room.
WestTexasS2K
Flyin Miata has conversion for GM LS series v8s in them. It looks like it would be a really fun car with 450hp with little weight change and good weight bias. Cost is the main issue and not sure you could ever get your money back or a majority of it you built one.
Jim F.
I remember a lot of years ago there was a production version called the Monster Miata w/ a high HP V-8 (Ford?).....haven't seen any discussions over the years whether they were good, bad, or indifferent. Anybody care to chime in on its specs, popularity, desirability, collectibility, etc. Can't remember the last time I saw one, if I ever have. I've always liked the Miata and felt (probably like a lot of others) that Lotus sure missed the boat when it was introduced.
Croc
When I was in Denver in March, there was this little Miaita beastie at Skip's well organized event. Owner Bryan comes on here from time to time with the profile name "Rugger". Clearly it is not your usual 1.6L or 1.8L 4 cylinder engine. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a354/mjohnson555/seats/CSR/Colorado%20April%202011/DSC_5416_edited-1.jpg This would put some hair on your chest (and other parts of your anatomy too!). No rainbow stickers on the back of this one. Edited July 5, 2011 by Croc

Ruadhd2
The longest I have ever kept a sports car was 2.5 years with a 1996 Miata in beautiful Montego Blue. Nothing went wrong, not even a light bulb. It sort of becomes like a glove or sock you forgot you were wearing. Its that seamless to operate. Here's a hint: If you buy a 1999 or 2000 you get rid of the pop-up headlights and still can run regular gas. After that it is premium. Also, there is the Mazdaspeed only made in 2004 and 2005, which is turboed and doesn't even say "Miata" on it. If you want a little more power and better resale value look for the Mazdaspeed. Also, you'll feel a little less feminine as a guy, if that's how you want to feel, because of the boost in factory power. Ultimately I got rid of mine for an M3. I just needed the thrill. I've always liked the Miata and felt (probably like a lot of others) that Lotus sure missed the boat when it was introduced. The red Miata at my shop has a Chevy 327 in it. The Ford 5.0 powered Monsters were produced by Monster Motorsports in Escondido, CA. They also made the Mega Monster with a supercharged 5.0 engine. They no longer make them. I've driven two of the regular Monsters and they were powerful but didn't seem well balanced. The current trend in V8 Miatas is the FM conversion using the LS2 engine. Weight difference from stock to conversion is about 100 lb and the shift in front to rear balance is 1%. Keith Tanner of FM recently installed one in his Targa Newfoundland race car and will be competing in the open class this year. Below is Elvis, the first V8 conversion done by FM. They took Elvis to a Corvette club autocross shortly after completion. Elvis took FTD by about 6 - 8 seconds.
WestTexasS2K
I think the LS series is the better choice. Lighter in weight lower profile and better heads in stock form cheap great hp upgrades. It's has also become the engine of choice for the early z car conversions.
Mondo
Wonder if you could put in GM's CARB approved Emotor kit (for hotrods) in it and be California legal?

snookwheel
I just bought my wife a 2002 Miata for her birthday. Very fun car and She is grinning ear to ear, says she doesn't want to AutoX it though. Check out the off-set wheel spokes, they are part of a physics defying top secret skunk-works project. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v640/snookwheel/Marydrivinghome.jpg

snookwheel
They are the standard rims. Just some wierd illusion that happened when taking the picture, I'm not sure why it came out like that.
jbanker
My wife and I bought a '99 MX-5 2-1/2 years ago that had 33K miles on it (red one on the right). We have put about 13K trouble free miles on it since we purchased it. It is used mostly in dry weather as our preferred daily driver. Recently we took a week long, top down trip through the Smokey Mountains and a jaunt up the Blue Ridge Parkway. Plenty of storage in the trunk for the two of us. We have done several similar trips in our Stalker. The MX-5 is a lot more comfortable. Ours is minimally equipped but does have leather seats, wind deflector, glass rear window, AM/FM/CD, air, power steering and brakes. It is a 5 speed with limited slip diff, 1.8L and gets better than 30 MPG. Cruise control for long trips would be the only option that I wish it did have. My son bought a '95 last year that had 115K miles on the clock (black one on the left). It is his only car other than the Locost that he has been building for the last three years. He autocrosses his Miata nearly every weekend when he is not co-driving with me in the Stalker in Indy Region SCCA Solo events. On week days he drives his Miata 75 miles round trip dailey to and from work. Probably the most versatile, least expensive and great fun car we have ever owned. You can't go wrong owning a MX-5 plus they have pretty good resale value if you take care of them. Jack

MHKflyer52
They are the standard rims. Just some wierd illusion that happened when taking the picture, I'm not sure why it came out like that. Interesting to say the least.....something to do with the speed the car was going when the photo was taken and the shutter speed of the camera I would suspect....I come to this conclusion only after realizing that the photo of the Miata was taken from another moving vehicle which was along side if I am not wrong. Neat illusion that would be hard to reproduce I bet. :driving:
snookwheel
I did take the picture out of my car when we were on the way home. What a fun ride. I have almost zero Mata experience, and when I got in it and floored it...... I thought to myself 'there must be something wrong!'..... but no, that is just how they run. I am so used to having my ears pinned back when the Stalker is floored. But now that I am getting some seat time, I find it to be an absolute blast to drive!
Mondo
I'm surprised that I feel like I'm going faster (down the freeway) in the Miata than the 7. I thought the lowness, openess, firmness, etc... would make the 7 feel faster at freeway speeds. It might have more to do with the 6 speed (vs 5 speed), 3.9 rear end and 17inch wheels in my 7. The good thing is my commute is highly patrolled by CHP so low 60s is just right (and hopefully good on the gas too). Believe me there are several. Jack
