Local laws too tough - no brooklands

Recommended Posts

I guess its a function of the Canadian approach to legislating public safety.

I've done a bit of research and I'm putting myself at risk of a steep ticket for driving an unsafe vehicle if I remove my windshield and put on a set of brooklands.

Vehicle safety laws says I need a safety glass windshield with working wipers.

Its the same law that governs other vehicle safety items so it carries a $200 fine or even vehicle impound.

I live in a busy urban location with lots of local and highway police around so I'm pretty sure I'd get stopped by an officer with a ticket quota.

Just venting my frustration.

Makes me wish I lived out of town.

All in all Canada is a wonderful country....just a bit tight on motoring freedom

I hear ya. PA has no lenience on windshields either yet other states don't even require a windshield. Its AS1 safety glass at least 12" tall (or 7" for street rods) or no car. :(

The worst part is 12" is a little too tall for a 7 and looks kind of disproportional compared to the rest of the car.

For road use I keep my full windshield on. I switch to my Brooklands occasionally, or for track days, but I like the extra flying rock/debris protection. We have all had cracked windshields on our family cars when something whacked us. Sure goggles protect your eyes, but what abt your forehead? On track I have a full face helmet.

Still, the look is so cool w/Brooklands....

You have probably already checked onto this by now but does your state have a weight classification? California has one good thing going for "hot rod and kit car" owners, besides SB100, and that is the 1500 pounds rule. Stay under 1500 and you get to skip things like fenders and other bothersome items. Some past legislator must have either been from SoCal or decided that we don't drive our "hot rods" in the rain. LOL.

When I went to register my first Seven in Quebec (wiper and squirter less), I successfully demonstrated I could reach over the top of the windscreen and shoot water on it from a bike drink bottle LOL

Must have caught the inspector on a really good day !!

  • 4 weeks later...

I've never known anyone who drives a 7 without a windscreen to get hassled in Ontario.

There is so much about the 7 that seems illegal to the uninformed, the average cop wouldn't know where to begin and therefore it doesn't come up.

I live in Calgary, I do not have wipers!. I mean whats the point I get rain on the front of the windshield which a wiper would remove but what about on the inside, should I install wiper there also?????

Seriously though I took my Stalker for an inspection at a renowned Hot Rod shop and they said I needed front and rear Defogger, bumpers, etc., not sure what I was supposed to defog at the rear LOL!!!

Another Alberta Stalker owner changed out his windshield for Brooklands without any problem from the local constabulary.

About thirty years ago I had a Manx style buggy and ran without a windshield. At the time the law stated that if your vehicle was manufactured with a windshield you were not allowed to remove it. I was stopped a few times and questioned about it and I argued successsfully that my car was built by myself and and I didnt design it to have a windshield so I wasnt required to install one. None of the officers decided to push the issue. I too live in the Toronto area.

I love Texas. I went to get my car registered the other day. I had to get an inspection first. I pulled up to the station about six guys came out asked a bunch of ?'s about the car. I told the inspector I need a sticker he asked does everything work? I said yes he said I won't make you unload it off the trailer. He gave me the sticker and I went on my way. It doesn't work that way in Dallas or Houston.

In BC, nowhere does it say you have to have a windsheild. It ~does~ say vehicles with windshields must have wipers and a two-speed defrost. The ultimate decision falls to the inspector. Whether you get hassled on the street or not, depends on the cop. It's just not fair.
