Croc
I got given a few of these to play with yesterday. Freshly released this week. Better lens and resolution of detail/lighting. Allows an external mic which remediates the biggest flaw with the earlier versions. http://gopro.com/hd-hero2-cameras/ At $299 it is a bargain compared to some other more expensive cameras. yellowss7
Mike, I don't see any mention of the exteral mic in the description or accessories tab. That is obviously a necessity for the rollbar mount IMO. My camera is still performing intermitantly and I want something that will be sure to catch your next gardening adventure. If it has the external mic capabilties that would be a great option. Tom
Croc
Well it will hardly ever record you spinning as you never get out of 3rd gear! :seeya: The external mic is now there: 1) Go to the link http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero2-motorsports-edition/ 2) Click on the features tab on that page - say 1/3rd to halfway down the page 3) Look at the piccy of the camera. 4) On the side of the camera is a 3.5mm external mic jack labelled Edited November 1, 2011 by Croc
jimrankin
After 10,0000 emails to them (at least half from me) about their shit sound they finally listened. LOL. When they came out with the 3D unit and still no decent sound I almost drove over the hill (their headquaters is only a few miles away from my house) and pitched my HD unit through their front door. Luckily for then it was foggy (alway foggy there, maybe it's why they are so slow to catch on) so I didn't fire up the 7 and do a drive by. They should develop some software to let you synchronize your existing "going to be second" camera video to the sound in your "my next buy" one so you can mount them both and share the soundtrack. Editing back and fourth two camera views with the "new" decent sound to the totally crap sound of the "old" unit would probably turn out a video from hell. LOL. Trackvision, RaceRender or Dashware allow you to synchronize multiple video feeds and sound tracks before then merging it with any data logging results that you have and overlaying the data onto the video. So I think you could take the footage from the old Go Pro and match it into the soundtrack from the Go Pro 2. At least this is what I am experimenting with using an old camera and RaceRender. jimrankin
Thanks for the heads up on the software. I've never had the time to play with the "fun" side of computers, just word/spread sheets for work etc. but I'm starting to get a bit more into it now. I would like to actually put together something worth watching. I had/have some great track footage from the HD Hero but other than wind noise the only thing it seemed to pick up was metalic clicks from suspension or seat belt mounts. Even with overlaying some hard driving rock&roll a track video is lame without tire and motor sound. When I say I may have to hire some 15 year old geek to show me how to use the software I'm not kidding! Actually, RNR lives pretty close by and seems to have it all wired, maybe I'll fabricate an intake silencer box for him and trade it for software lessons. LOL. MichaelD
Mike, Will that external mic allow us to hear that Ohssssssssssssssssssshit you say as your gardening experiment begins? If so it will be well worth it. ;-)
JohnK
Croc, Anyone done a comparison with the just-released Nikon Coolpix AW100? Similar price ($320 at Costco), and, among other things, it includes a GPS - which I would need to find my way out of the woods I'd get myself lost in after going off the track ;-)
rnr
Also try the Contour Plus which now includes GPS and external mic support: http://contour.com/products/contour-plus I have the earlier Contour HD and while it has the same noise issues as the GoPro I do prefer its ease of use with only 2 buttons to operate. Not sure how good a GPS function would be as it only seems to read like 1 spot per second in movie mode. At speed you would travel a long way before the next GPS data point is recorded. The Contour seems to record GPS as 5 spots a second so that may be better if you want to create a track map instead of a piece of abstract art. I will give the Go Pro unit a little try out against the HD POV camera I have at this weekends LEO drive (hopefully no more snow!). Personally I am a fan of the POV unit as it is one button operation to record and has a nifty little wireless remote to wrap around your wrist. Despite this it still took me a day to work out how to record! Edited November 2, 2011 by Croc

Does it have a remote to start and stop it? If it's mounted to the rollbar It is not really accessible to reach up and turn it on when strapped in. Does it accept a Lanc remote? The new Plus has a 170 degree field of view, I wonder if it gives a fish eye look to the video. That's a pretty wide angle. Tom

Tom Put a racing stripe on your car. When I did the business chat show interviews I was told to wear stripes as they make you look slimmer on camera.

Tom No remote that I know of but it has one button operation which I find easy to use even when strapped in the car with the camera on the rollbar. It does have some sort of bluetooth apps that can connect to the camera and wirelessly view video and change settings - maybe they can turn the recoding on and off as well?
