Hi Guys

This is an early post for me. But I am a Caterham Race car owner and Driver. We compete in the SCCA's E Prepared Division. Two weeks ago I took the car to Watkins Glen Double Weekend. I had never driven this car in Anger before (just a couple of solo events) and MAN! This car is a freakin' BLAST to drive.

I was Put in a group of cars that included other E Prepared cars..... The Caterham just blew them away! I then concentrated on the GT cars in my class and passed 12 of them on my way to a 5th overall position. There was no way I was going to catch the Trans Am prepared Corvettes and Mustang (one had a DEI, 675hp, Corvette race engine and tube frame) But I was having a lovely dice with a Camaro at the end of the "long course" race.

The "short course" was a little easier on the Big engined cars and I was only able to finish 7th.

I have been reading about this track day and wish you guys the best. I was tempted to drive down, but I will be at Lime Rock the weekend before and I will be Racing the Caterham in a national Race.

I will keep this group in mind in the future for track events. Although our car is a little under powered because we ar limited to our Ztec 4 cyl engine and 13" tires, as per SCCA.

Hope you have good weather and a fun time.

George

Hey CarMan. Good luck w/next race @ Lime Rock! I recall other drivers saying that National level racing is much more competitive than regional. Look out for the hump in turn five at Lime Rock, one of our guys stuffed his Caterham into the tire wall there a month or two ago. Do a search here for a thread called:"I learned something in Driver's...." for the details/video.

And congratulations on success at Watkins Glen. Small engine, big air resistance definitely limits top speed.

George, Welcome to the forum. I'm the guy that went into the tire wall on the uphill. An expensive lesson in car control for sure. I just did the SCCA Double Driving school at NJMP and and had a ball, can't quite figure out how to get my car into an SCCA class though. Let us know when you are racing and we can come to cheer you on! We would all love to have you at the NJMP event later this month. I expect to have my car back together by then.

Hi George - Welcome to the forum. Where are you based out of? As it is, I would not be worried about having an underpowered car - your skill as a driver probably exceeds all of us 'track day hackers' that have more power. After all Yellowss with 50hp more is driving Miss Daisy. Blubarisax has a fetish for rubber and likes getting close to it. Kitcat is usually mowing grass and I just go spinning round and round in circles getting dusty. :jester: Hope to see you out there some time.

Thanks for the welcome.

I am a "Walter Mitty" driver who always wanted to be a racing driver. But, you know the reasons; work, family, $$$$$(or lack therof) mortgage, ridicule by others, skiing, golf, yadda yadda yadda.............. never took the plunge.

So finally, after the kids got into ....and out of college. I went to Skip Barber and learned the "craft" of driving. And I do mean craft. It was like the difference between learning to ski without and instructor, and with an instructor. You can only get so far without one.

Raced in their series when I could afford to. (About 2 times per year) and finally went in with a friend on this Caterham. He is at Lime Rock with the car as we speak.

Every time we unload this car.... People come over and want to talk about it. Forget match.com guys. Just put the caterham in front of the bar and everyone will want to see who has this car. Everyone has a story. Everybody smiles.

But I would also like to meet you guys. Our car is a little beat up, like most race cars. A true race car is nothing more than a tool to be abused in pursuit of a podium. Although we are not podium regulars, we are thrashing this car. It was origionally brought into the country as a racing car, and went to the Nationals.

While it will never win a concours..... We love it anyway.

Seeeeee Yaaaaa

Just an update on Lime Rock.

My Co owner and racer spent this last weekend at the Rock and had a great time. Even in one Rainy session.

He was cautious at the uphill and always made sure of the steering being straight and he even lifted at the breakover to prevent any loss of control.

Brian was coming off of a BIG Off at Watkins Glen last fall and was being careful. He had a blast! Says the car is Fantastic!

I am Based in Johnstown, NY and, even though I am the local Dodge,Chrysler,Jeep dealer, We have a Caterham. The Caterham is so similar in driving dynamics to a Skip Barber Formula car, I just had to be a part of it.

Well. On to the Next adventure. Lime Rock National Race on June 22-23. I hope to have a great time and bring everything home in one piece.

Things are looking good for me to have my car back for this weekend. The motor, gearbox, rear suspension and electrical harness. Just need to fit the front suspension, engine ancillaries and roll cage. The final parts are on their way too.

I'm really looking forward to having my car back on the track for this event!

:hurray::hurray::hurray: Excellent news Karl! Your guys will soon be able to become an official Caterham Dealer, having put your car together a couple of times.

My new slicks are in and I'm going to take my wheels over today to have them mounted. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Yes Karl, Croc and I are both doing the member days on Saturday and Sunday. I think I'm arriving on Friday night. We'll be on the track opposite you but I'm sure we willl stop over to see you. Looks like we will be partying in the paddock for a few more nights this time. I'll make a bigger batch of salsa. I think Jack is coming in on Saturday to ride with Croc. And Michael D will be there on Sunday I think.

When are Steve an Kitcat arriving? Guys? Chime in.

I'll arrive in Mahwah to visit family on Saturday afternoon. Thought I'd get down to NJMP around 4:00 pm Sunday.

I'm staying at the Fairfield Inn in Millville. Assume I can drop off the trailer at the track on Sunday?

Yep drop the trailer off at the track. I think we are running Lightning on the Monday so maybe drive over there and park your trailer next to Karl's (Caterham signs make it easy to find) as he will be there with Track Daze on the Sunday. I think Karl will leave his trailer there overnight?

If he is not leaving his car then come over to Thunderbolt. Tom and I will be at Thunderbolt somewhere around pit garage 114 on Sunday as that is what I have been assigned to end of Tuesday. My car stays over night in the garage. Tom will leave his trailer overnight there and then truck over to Lightning in the morning.

I will roll in late afternoon Sunday, if all goes as planned. I am staying at the track.

Tom: Anything planned for Sunday nite dinner (cook out, head to the clubhouse on site, in to town)???

Karl: I want your mechanics! I still have the following math problem: 1+1 = 0. I visited my no-longer trusty mechanic today. Car sits untouched in last week. Call to my buddies in Seattle where I was promised new car wld be shipped out and received by today-uhh, still looking for a carrier.

I am still 99% sure the Birkin will be done in time, looks unlikely the Caterham will be here tho. I am committed to coming with or without a se7en. Like Steve (BBall), I have family in NJ and have planned a reunion w/them as part of this. I suspect if I am desperate there will be a rental of some kind available.

Mike,

Thankfully, my mechanic has been non-stop on my car. I think he actually likes to work on it as much as I like to drive it.

If you need any tips on micromanagement, just let me know. I go by the shop every day and call england all the time looking for any missing parts.

Good luck getting a car on the track.

Mike, et.al. I will put the ez up out along with my well recevied Salsa and chips, Some Cheese and Salami, and a case of beer. Feel free to add to the spread. I figure we will sit around and check out each others cars. I hear that Croc has added more carbon. Rumor has it that he's added so much carbon that it now weighs only 350 pounds.:bs:

Bring a folding chair if you have room. Once everyone gets in, we can head to dinner. I'll check and see if the Finish line pub on site is open and make reservations if it is. If not we can head out and do dinner in town.

Still room for any other local seveners to join in.
