So I run a Birkin and it has the stock rear exit exhaust. I'd like to replace it from the collector on back and set it up as a side exit system. The stock system is heavy, has lots of back pressure, and causes fumes to come into the cockpit when using the side curtains. I'm told that a side exit system will help a good bit with the fumes and it most certainly will be lighter.

So..........I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation as to what muffler to use. I'm looking for something that is reasonably quiet so that I don't feel like a criminal driving out of my neighborhood at 6AM on an autocross morning or through town.

I was told by one Seven owner that a DNA muffler from Summit racing would be good and then told by another that the DNA was really loud. So who knows. I realize that it's hard to gauge how loud a system is but I'm guessing you all understand what I'm looking for.

Any thoughts on mufflers?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

no personal experience, but I remember someone 'highly recommending' the 6.25" titanium silencer from http://www.raceco.com/ on one of the seven forums a while back. Steve.

PS: if you go ahead, please post details and photos as there's few of us that might be interested in that mod (OK, I might be interested in that mod). Thanks.

Opps, sorry Dave, forgot that's from my UK contacts book. They're apparently very good, but will be V expensive at todays exchange rate (and do not get me started on that  )

I'm sure you can do better 'locally'

Dave-

I had my car (Caterham) converted to side exit by simply replacing the pipe that comes off the silencer with a 90 degree bend. It's worked fine so far (2 years of ownership). I had to do this to get past NJ's ground clearance rules...but probabably would have done it anyway.

I would bark up Woody Harris' tree at MSI Motorsports in Vacaville CA...those guys prep race Birkins, so he'd probably know best. Also, I think some guy from usa@se7ens.net (a list serve worth joining if you aren't already a member) has made his own carbon fiber can...was it Pierre Demartines?

I used the Aeroturbine muffler on my Miata powered Caterham. You can hear how it sounds on my car

. I really like the sound and I have seen local independent dyno proof of their performance claims.

They make a version with a built in resonator which is the one I used. I have never had a turbo that spooled up so quickly as this one does with the Aeroturbine muffler.

Hi Dave,

I know that Paul Shipp, another Birkin owner, had a custom Burns SS muffler made. He documented it on the "yahoo" birkinowners site if you do a search. See his car here: http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=255

The Burns website is here: http://66.223.106.208/UltraliteMuffler/ultralitemuffler.html
