m wirth Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 (edited) Just wondering if anyone has been able to change the air flow with deflectors or extensions on the standard Ultralite side exhaust, as pictured, to keep the fumes from overcoming the passenger? thanks Edited July 1, 2013 by m wirth
powderbrake Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I don't seem to have any exhaust fumes getting to the passenger. I haven't noticed it when riding in the passenger seat, and have had no comments from passengers. Maybe just drive faster?:leaving:
rss Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 mike, my understanding is that fumes coming back into the cockpit can be an issue if the exhaust exit is mounted too close to the body. that said, i don't recall there being an issue when i had the standard exhaust. my current exhaust extends further rearward and further out from the body, and it works well. were i to do it again i'd extend it out a little more -- only because now the hot exhaust has fried the paint at the bottom outside corner of the rear fender.
WestTexasS2K Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 M Wirth attach a picture and lets see what you currently have.
m wirth Posted July 2, 2013 Author Posted July 2, 2013 thankyou for your responses, maybe it will upload for me now.
WestTexasS2K Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 it looks like it is turned down to the ground. instead of turned out. Maybe try and turn the tip out a bit and try that.
m wirth Posted July 2, 2013 Author Posted July 2, 2013 thanks, that would probably get the exhaust out into the air stream better.
xcarguy Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Mike, While my car is not an Ultralite, it does have Ultralite fenders. Here are a couple of photos of my car where you can see the RH side exhaust turn out and where it is located in relation to the fender. The exhaust, as is currently designed and installed, was originally done when the car sported the smaller, fiberglass fenders. As it sits, I have no issues with exhaust fumes. However, as stated by rss, I would asdvise making turnouts a tad longer than mine as I do have slight browning on the lower front edge of the rear fenders from exhaust gases. X
powderbrake Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 It appears that my exhaust angles down closer to the ground than the OP's, and that may be why I haven't had any exhaust fumes.
jimrankin Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I have the stock exhaust system with the tip turned at 45 degrees (half way from straight down to straight out). The tip ends 10" from the rear fender and I have never had a complaint about fumes. Noise yes! Remember that as you turn it more out than down the car is going to get "louder". Could be a problem if the tracks you go to limit DB.
Mondo Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 (edited) Mine's a little more out than down Edited July 3, 2013 by Mondo
m wirth Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 again, thanks for the feedback. Jerry, it looks like we have the same build exhaust and "door" frame. On Mondos it is a little shorter but more parallel to the ground as is mine, but he has a heat shield and maybe the air flowing between the muff and the shield creates a faster air stream and.........think I'll go get another beer, been doing hay all day and it was definitely a Murphys rule day, broke tines on the tedder, blew the hyd line on my mower and worst of all the ess switch on my Dodge went out so the A/c didn't work, 94 here today. Later everyone have a fun and safe 4th mike
xcarguy Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 With all that going on, better have a couple of beers.
