You Drive Your 7 In Big City Traffic?

Recommended Posts

So here we have a story about one of our fellow 7'ers driving through Times Square in Manhattan. All the pedestrians rubbernecking the car caused immovable gridlock. So did the police shouting at him for disturbing the peace. :cuss:

Also, apparently many kamikaze taxis almost killed him. :ack: Obviously.

Who around here drives their 7 in big city traffic? It seems to me a deathwish! Am I just being a total girl?

2 days after I bought my 7 I drove thru chicago on a highway/freeway during heavy traffic. GPS said it was the fastest route. It was kinda fun zipping thru traffic trying to get out of chicago before my gps (cellphone taped to steering wheel) batteries died.

Maybe just a "girlyman"

Drove mine to work yesterday, 35 miles each way of stop and go rush hour traffic. You really have to drive defensively.

I drive mine in heavy traffic sometimes but avoid it if possible. I find that most people give me a wide berth, mainly so they can get a better look at my car. Russ

The key for me is to drive a little bit faster then most folks. You have to stay out of folks blind spots. Its easy to dice thru traffic in the seven. You can guarantee that those lade SUV drivers have no idea you exist, so you are better to scoot past them as quickly as possible. It takes me about 35 minutes of busy commuter roads before I get to the country roads.

i live in houston and drive in the city, but i do my best to minimize it, driving off peak hours and driving very defensively. still it is very scary. many many distracted drivers in big suv's playing with their cell phones plus other drivers doing stupid maneuvers in order to get a better view of my car. to put it in perspective, two years ago i was rear ended in my former dd while stopped at a traffic light by a soccer mom in an suv trying to figure out her new cell phone -- impact at about 30 mph. two months ago i was t-boned in my current dd by a woman at an intersection who blew through her red light. she didn't even notice the traffic signal -- her defense was that she was "sleepy". it's doubtful i would have survived either incident in the seven.

Driven through San Francisco city streets many times. The main issue for me is parking as I both need a safe spot and want to be close to my destination so that I dont have to carry my helmet and toolbox too far.

I find highway driving to be scarier than city driving as the speeds are higher and you have less time to react to a moron.

Been thru Manhatten a bunch of times in my 7. Last was last summer, but only from the GW down the FDR Drive to the Triboro Bridge. Didn't enjoy the perpetual contruction along LaGuardia Airport on the Grand Central Pkwy, thankfully teh final paving should be finished in the next few weeks.

Last time thru Manhatten's streets was returning from the NeDiv autoX on a late Sunday afternoon last spring. Weekend's worth of crap in the car including a large bicycle strapped to the rollbar. The horrible road conditions were really the bother. I'd rather be in a 4 wheeled vehicle with the bumps, holes, and dips than a bike.

I drove down Broadway w/ Al in Orange a nmber years ago when he let a friend display it in a shop downtown. I have some videos online somewhere.

I'd rather be driving on a highway than on the street. Traffic flow in a singlar direction. Road debris, like blown out tires, becomes a bigger issue. I can out accelerate and out brake nearly anything else and w/o a top i have awesome visibilty in the 7. I also toss some bright yellow rollbar padding on the top of the roll bar and drive with the lights on.

I live in a resort community and I don't even bother trying to take mine out anymore on the hot summer weekends, nothing worse than thousands of inattentive tourists.

Being retired I use the rest of the week for my cruising.

In a word, yes. Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, all driven multiple times in traffic w/ no problems (although I'd prefer not to, but sometimes it cannot be avoided).

Croc seems to attract trouble. ;)

I had some linke to those vids, but they don't seem to work anymore

I live in Los Angeles, have to drive through the big city to get out of dodge. Really fun to cruise Rodeo Drive in Mr Orange wearing a helmet, people run out into the street to take pictures while your at a light next to a Veyron LOL

Going through the downtown high rise district is pretty awesome too.

Tryin to find me a rich Saudi Prince http://www.websmileys.com/sm/cool/653.gif

LOL

My mom was visiting, so took her for the Beverly Hills tour in the 7. She was a good sport considering she recently had both hips replaced (it was her idea to take the 7). Squeezing her into the Tillets was fun.

There is literally "Carparazzi" who hang out on Rodeo Dr to take pictures of the exotics that show up there.

Speaking of Saudi Princes, one recently shipped his Pagani Hauyarananana (whatever it's called) and his entourages Merceds G-Wagen and a GT3 over just so he can drive around Beverly posing.

Driving a 7 wearing a helmet. So epic.

And good sense especially if your car has brooklands screens instead of a windshield. There is enough crap kicked off both our own tires and the cars in front that I drive with a helmet 99% of the time. The few short neighbourhood trips that I dont I always wear ballistic sunglasses instead.

How do you avoid being flattened?

Never had to worry about it. People ask me the same thing about driving my Elise and Miata before that but I dont really see much difference between them and the Seven. Inattentive drivers wont see an H1 Hummer either so size of car only really matters in the aftermath of the accident. With the much better stopping distance and agility of our cars I hope to be able to avoid said accidents instead.
