I usually lift the rear of the car as far up as I can with a jack after draining all oil and working on the sump. That way the oil sloshes forward and makes priming of the dry oil pump go much faster.

So I have added all my fluids and have all the wires reconnected except the ignition. I turn the key and hear the relay CLICK, once, but the starter is silent. Battery +13.5v to the relay but zero on the starter side. I was able to remove the relay but it took some figuring. It is(was) mounted to the fire wall/ bottom of the foot well with nuts and bolts. Whoever installed it didn't plan on replacing it.

Now I'm off to NAPA to see if we can figure what the application is.

The guy at NAPA used an old school BOOK to identify the relay. It's an Echlin Ignition ST236 (NAPA's manufacture). He didn't find any listed as "in stock" in the ATL warehouse, it's a Monday check with the manufacture part. As far as an application, it was used on Jaguar, MG Triumph, Hillman.

I am rethinking doing a direct replacement and using something more common at 1/3 the cost. I could use some help with the wiring. In post #42 I show the wire connections. I think the White wire is from the ignition switch. On the relay there are 0 ohms between that terminal and the case/mounting bracket. What might the Black wire connect to? +12v to boost the ignition voltage during start up? My Caterham wiring diagram shows the relay on the starter, that's not how mine is configured. :confused:

Now that it starts and runs, I found a hydraulic leak. Gimme a break (brake). I noticed a small amount of fluid on the rear tire. It turns out to be from the rear wheel cylinder. I have ordered 2 from RockAuto, but they didn't have a listing for shoes. I think I can find someone in the Atlanta area to reline them.

I notice an interesting piping arrangement. The left rear cylinder has the only bleed screw on the axle. The right rear cylinder has 2 pipes, one in and the other out to the left side. Odd.

Since I'm sure they haven't been worked on in a long time, I'm wondering how much trouble it will be to break them loose. Any tricks or magic solution, the cylinders are aluminum.

I think I have found a local shop that can reline the shoes. I think the drums are at their maximum inside diameter. The axle is out of an Austin Marina sold in the US from '73 to '75. In the UK the car(s) were the Morris Marina and Ital. I'm wondering if there is a possibility of finding new drums somewhere in the UK. I'm sure used ones could be found, but I already have a set. Ideas?

When I had the engine and tranny out of the car I did some insulation installation. I applied some thin fiberglass stuff with a reflective outside surface to the footwells and the tunnel about 2 feet in. Over the last weekend I went out for a blat to see if I could feel a difference. It was 92F and midafternoon. I would say it was a great improvement. After about an hour of 2 lane roads of the local horse farm area I noticed my feet were a little warm. This is a great improvement. Last summer I would have had a roasted leg.
