  1. Who at R&T owns the Seven?
  2. Setting up the bearing preload and the tooth engagement takes some skill. Just taking apart the diff and putting in the the new ring and pinion gears is fairly simple. It's getting it set up right that is tricky. My Caterham came with an open Sierra diff. Knowing what kind of HP I was going to get from my engine I put in a Quaiffe LSD. I took a class way back in the '70s on drivelines while in college and have set up a number of diffs but that was a long time ago. I elected to take out the diff and take it to a driveline shop and have a professional do the install and set up. I probably could have done it myself but my skills in that area were rusty and I didn't want problems down the line.
  3. That would have been spectacular but the office is on the second floor. Maybe they could have parked a couple of caravans under the window for it to land on.
  4. That was a lot more realistic than the last time they supposedly built one in a shop while the Stig drove some distance across England. Fun to watch but I was hoping Clarkson was going to make a few laps around the BBC building like he did with the Peel.
  5. If it continues after the engine has been run a few times there are a couple of things that seem to help. Prefill the oil filter before starting after an oil change. Change brands and/or weights of oil. When I talked to Bill Cardell at Flyin Miata about this a few years ago his cure was to start them up and rev the piss out of them until the clatter went away. Not sure I agree with that cure. The ticking doesn't damage anything, its just annoying and should go away once the engine is back in daily service.

  7. +1 on the Caterham oil pressure situation. Mine dropped off suddenly and I plumbed in a mechanical gauge to find that what the electronic gauge showed as less than 1 bar was actually a little over 70 psi. I've heard that it is the pressure sensor rather than the gauge that goes south. I haven't replaced the sensor but as long as I see the stock gauge come up to its "normal" position I don't worry about oil pressure. Same goes for the alternator light. It has glowed red from day one but as Mazda alternators are known for their longevity I haven't fixed it in seven years and 23k miles of driving. I did pick up the correct resistor last year but haven't got around to wiring it in. It must be working well because the original PC680 battery held up for those seven years, just being replaced this spring.

  9. The spacer http://caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_product=653 goes between the T bolt and the black mount for the spare tire. There is a shoulder on the T bolt that the spacer abuts on one end and the mounting hole on the black mount on the other end. The only thing on the car is the threaded hole that the T bolt goes into. Go ahead and send what you have and if the spacer shows up send that along as well.
  10. It's a sleeve about 1.5 - 2" long that goes over the T bolt and seats between the T bolt and the black tire carrier. I'll take it with or without the spacer. EM me your paypal address and I will get payment on the way. skipcannon@msn.com
  11. Do you have the long T bolt and spacer to go with it? If so, I will take it. Thanks, Skip
  12. Assuming I have the standard 44 liter tank like other SVs then that is 11.6 gallons. I have gone a little over 300 miles on a tank on a road trip but usually fill up at 275 to 280 miles. Highway mileage is 30 - 32 mpg depending on cruising speed. Around town it is 24 - 26 mpg depending on how many G-force fixes I give myself. My fuel range far exceeds my bladder range so I stop about every 100 - 150 miles. My back also appreciates the frequent stops to stretch a bit.

  14. I feel your pain. I put a Miata motor and transmission in my Caterham. The hardest and most time consuming part was the wiring. I spent about 80 hours on it with a six month time out when my eyes went wonky on me. I used a stand alone ECU from Link which used the Miata connectors. After a year I converted over to a Hydra Nemesis which didn't come with Miata connectors so I started over again and spent about 30 hours sorting things out. There is a box of leftover Miata wiring and connectors out in my shop. I find it handy when wiring up other things.
  15. Good to hear you are reserving some spots for the people across the pond. I hope some of the Brits from the GBB can make it, they were fun people to travel with. I'm signed up and am going to have a hard time waiting for it to happen. I can't recall ever signing up for an event more than a year in advance.
  16. Looks like a good excuse to me. What is it?

  21. Great writeup on your new enterprise. I'm looking forward to purchasing a bottle of your bourbon when it is ready. Will you be able to ship it to another state?
  22. Gotta go buy some Lotto tickets. I'll get back to you with a wire transfer as soon as I win the Lotto. Or maybe I will just rob a few banks.
