Here is the link to the story of my California drive. I turned out to be a sun-up-sun-down dream drive. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/511871-california-guys-need-some-p-car-guy-travel-advice-3.html I also had a great time driving a 350z convertible from Pheonix to Vegas and back. Maybe some of these Porsche driver road recommednations from my other post will be helpful. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/534052-driving-route-advice-pheonix-vegas.html

Bruce, for an extra strange vegas experience, go to the Gun Store (http://www.thegunstorelasvegas.com) and fire a fully automatic Thomson Sub Machine Gun. I did the WW2 package with my wife and it was a unique experience to say the least. Back to the topic, though, enjoy the Canyon, if even just making your way there and walking the ridge. On a recent trip to California, I rented a Hertz Corvette (435HP) convertible for about $200. Perhaps you should rent a muscle car and blast your way across the desert to the Grand Canyon!

Ever see that movie "Brazil"? Its an amazing film, but so creepy in its true but distorted view of modern working society that I had to turn it off the other day. Anyways, I've confirmed today that there is no way to "hide in the machine" just like the lead in the film. I had a discussion with my executive this morning and it was subtly clear that even though I'm a top performer in my current role, eventually the organization is going to want me to move to another department so that new ideas can be brought to the group. I know thats probably right for me and right for the organization, but its not fun to be forced into action by the "man". Thats life in Capitalism. I view work as a social contract, I guess the guys paying the bills get to write the rules.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm just finding it strange these days. I've kind of levelled off in my career and am facing questions about what's next for me. The next level is executive and would require a kind of commitment and work/life tradeoff that I'm not sure are the right choices for me. I've got young kids and a wonderful wife and its strange to be 40+ and starting to think "I'm good now". Perhaps it was losing a spouse to cancer at 37 that has reset my priorities. I just don't want to lose my current balance in search for the more money and "power"

I'm 20 years in the Canadian banking industry (age 42) and increasingly bored with the rat race. Of course, you could shoot back, that in this economy, I should shut up and be glad I have a funded pension and a steady income. I'd love to be able to find a viable income from something more closely timed to my passions like motorsports. Just curious what other folks do and whether they also are doing their job as a means to an end, like I do to enable the other joys in my life like family and hobbies

Sorry, just to clarify, if I seal my filler cap, I will only have the crankcase vent into the dry sump tank. Is that kosher?
-
I recently read that it would be better to vent the rocker as well as the pressure in the rocker system can inhibit the flow of oil up into the head. Now that may be overkill unless you are running a high rev racing engine.
-
sounds really cool
-
I guess I will just push harder on the right pedal
-
green and silver car with slicks is new top dog in my books!
-
In terms of the wetness on the carb side, I'm starting to think that the oil condensation from the filler cap is more apt top collect on the cooler side of the engine where is more stuff to condense on.
-
Learned a few things tonight. My oil filler cap is vented which contributes a lot to the underhood soot and smoke. I'm also starting to think the pressure sender reads wrong. The sender sits on top of the aftermarket oil filter housing. I suspect the pressure is pretty high there. I checked the flow into the dry sump oil tank. If I really has 80psi in the system, I would expect it to gush, not pour.

I just don't think I'm getting all the beans out of my super sprint engine. Its running fine on the weber 40s and it revs cleanly, but it just does not pull with the power I would expect from ~100hp. Should I get a colourtune and a weber tuning manual and play with the settings to see if I'm running too lean? I know I should not expect too much from a crossflow, but at 525kg, she should have more go, I think. Thanks

Can you show us the stereo and speaker placements?

The car came from the US so I bet it would be OK to bring back. I once did the math...this car has pretty much the same power to weight as a modern Porsche GT3. Thats a lot of go for not much $$ I think he is just getting stung by the weak economy. If you have a modified Porsche itch this is a great car to scratch it with. Driving it makes you feel like Vic Elford in a 917 down the Mulsanne straight. Engage warp 9! I drove her one night and now she is the affair with the redhead that I will always remember The original owner took an 82 shell down to bare metal and built it up to an awesome spec as part of a post divorce self indulgent exercise in "because I want to" . I bet there is over $60K of work on this car. Jim, good pick with the wife!
-
As an FYI. The 3.6 ltr conversion alone on a 911 is ~$15K. You get a modern reliable ~300HP combined with the simplicity and tactile handling of the mid 80s Porsche chassis. Oh, if only I was a rich man with a multi-car garage and a more understanding spouse......

I'm posting this for a friend. He is having trouble selling his car up here because everyone is looking for a stock Porsche, which this is not. It is the ultimate hot rod 911. Huge 993 Varioram engine stuffed into a galvanized SC chassis. This car absolultly flies. If you folks know anyone who is reaching middle age (look in the mirror) and wishes he had a toy in the garage that he could pull out on a Tuesday night or a Sunday morning and make him forget all the troubles of modern life, this is the car for you or them. This 911 is all about power to weight. I’ve driven it before and its like being fired out of a cannon. The sound it makes is like all the great LeMans racers all packed into one and placed right behind your back. There is a long and storied history on the car back to its transformation from bare metal chassis to its current state and it is immaculate. I almost bought it a few years ago its just that I already had a 911 (which I then sold to buy my Caterham) James has dropped his asking price to This car is guaranteed to change your perceptions of acceleration and make you grin like a mad-man. thanks will check it out. The hood underside is very sooty so I think its oil burning off.
-
But...there is no smoke from the exhaust and the car runs fine.
-
Its a real mystery to me. The exhaust side of the engine is perfectly dry. The intake side is mist wet from the head gasket down on the intake side, mostly at the front around the distributor. My car is dry sumped and runs very high oil pressure. 70-100 PSI. I checked the breather hose that runs off the block above the fuel pump and it is lightly blowing crankcase fumes. The car only leaves a tiny bit of oil on the driveway, but does smoke under the hood when hot. There is a little burst of smoke on start up, but

Oil is clean. Guess I better get it done at the beginning of next season. Only 90 days here till snow
-
So other than a dirty engine and a bit of smoke, should I really care about a seeping head gasket? I also assume this is best left to a professional given the need for tight tolerances and torue requirements? Thanks
-
Is there a seal I should replace? On my crossflow there is a leak from around the distributor. Thanks for the advice

Beautiful Birkin Nick. How did you manage to get it licensed in Canada? I assume you in Canada. Why don't you tell us more by posting in the Members Ride section?
