  1. I was showing my wife our retirement savings last night. I've got a current plan to retire in 10 years. Her comments is that we should take some money out of the market to buy a ski condo and enjoy it and also rent it out. Later sell it for profit if we need the money for retirement. My gut tells me that no matter how you slice it, this is a bad idea. I don't like the risk of 2nd property prices even in this healthy canadian housing market. Also I think it will cost more to carry than simply renting whenever we want to go up north. Lastly, I don't want to risk my early retirement plans. The other side of the argument is the lifestyle benefits while the kids are young. Am I just a cheap bastard???
  2. Key challenge for Canada is the excessively difficult DMV/transport canada process. I think if we had a less restrictive process, there would be many more on the road.

  5. keep in mind it is the smaller drivers development track. In my mind that makes it actually better. The big track at Mosport is very high speed, has poor surface quality in some areas and has some very scary concrete barriers. the drivers development track has tighter turns and is perfectly attuned to a classic seven chassis and drivetrain
  6. Sounds great....thanks for organizing! I guess this spring its time to change the old cracked tires for something sticky (Toyo R888)
  7. Here is the look I'm shooting for. I also plan to do a pair of yellow tripes from nose to tail I'm going to swap from clam to cycle fenders and cover the cycle fenders and rear fenders in the carbon fiber wrap along with the stone guards. The body will be wrapped in matte black. For now I will stick with the Tulip wheels until something more interesting pops up. Hopefully all in I will be less than $1,000 bucks for the full conversion. In terms of reversability, I'm going to get green cycle fenders so that if I decide to go back, its just a matter of removal and I'm back to green and shiny.
  8. Good to see the Lotus Seven is the purest of all minerals
  9. lovely car and a great price. Where were you 6 months ago...! Someone will get a great deal
  10. Hi, I have a live axle (Ital) caterham. What are some common wheel options for these axles?
  11. Is it as straight forward as getting the fenders and new wing stays and bolting them on? In terms of the cycle fenders, I have seen someone post the use of an aircraft industrial adhesive to affix the fender to the wing stays to avoid bolt holes. Any other recommendations? Thanks
  12. Great minds think alike I may need to trim it back a bit around the header exit hole.
  13. From what I can tell the vinyl wrap can be pulled with heat and patience over even the toughest curves like a headlight bucket. The idea of a low cost colour change certainly is enticing
  14. I've been drooling over all the different colour configurations of the various rides in the group and I've come to the conclusion that a vehicle wrap would make a fun spring project. I checked around and professionals want ~$2000 to do a vehicle wrap. I'm thinking about trying it myself and have found a place in the UK ( http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk/vehiclewrappingvws1.asp ) that sells the stuff in bulk. I think for about $350 I can get my hands on the required materials I'm going to plan it out over the winter and give it a shot (with or without a conversion to cycle wings). A couple of layouts come to mind: Matte Black Matte Orange Forest green with yellow stripe Gloss Orange I wish they had Gulf blue!
  15. Another option I'm considering is trying a DIY vehicle wrap. A seven is a pretty straight forward slab sided shape. The only challenge will likely be the hood louvers and nose cone. Might be a fun winter garage project.
  16. What do you think it would cost to have a Caterham S3 chassis painted? I really like the look of a solid colour body, clamshells and nose cone. Is preparing and painting an aluminium body especially expensive?
  17. I've always had a soft spot for a tr4. I saw one the other day on YouTube that was supercharged. I'll take one in BRG with a surrey hard top
  18. I can probably get a bunch of Porsche 911 guys as well thru a Rennlist forum

  20. Crazy Jerry! Quite possibly the most sickening display of suicidal riding I have ever seen. I don't buy that this guy has any kind of unique riding skills. He is just a complete tool!
  21. As part of completing an off season tune up parts stock-up, I'd like to source the following parts that are correct for a 1700cc Kent crossflow motor. Can someone share their recommended spec and store: -sparkplugs -Distributor cap (side take-off) -Plug wires -Coil

  24. Its a great british car mag. Anyways, a great editorial from Chris Harris about the car manufacturers have lost touch are are focused on speed over driving involvement. I wrote this in response as a letter to the editor: Chris, I couldn't agree more. Faster is not always better and I'd take it a step further. Recently, I sold my immaculate 84' Porsche Carrera (forgive me Chris!) to get even more connected with the sports car driving experience. You see, I live in Ontario, Canada; a nanny state where the fine for speeding 30mph over is a 6,200 GBP fine and a 7 day vehicle impound and license suspension. Like many of your readers, I sit behind a desk all day and have a busy family life, so when I get in my sportscar, I need maximum experience for every mile and MPH. I found my heaven in a bog standard crossflow ford powered Caterham imported from Japan. Now every moment of driving is a physical and emotional driving immersion. The engine is smoky, the gear shift and steering wheel are on the wrong side, I'm jammed into the cockpit, my head and torso are frozen, my legs and ankles are roasting and I'm going deaf. But I feel alive and it's no longer about the speed, its about the sensation.
