I was given the chance to do a single race in a Lotus Cortina as i swapped my Lotus 7 S2 - we both wanted to try each other’s cars out. The chassis was quite flexible, even with a roll cage, hence the wheel lifting. But you never really felt the front wheels lift unlike other historic cars with chassis like a wet noodle (e.g. Holdens, Ford Falcons, Galaxies, or the later Capri, …). You did know when the inside rear came up as that would cause the suspension to make crash noises as you hit max droop. it was quite underpowered, you drove it like a Mini - never ever lift - maintaining momentum was critical. On bias ply tires it would easily rotate from rear offsetting the understeer you could get by stuffing it into a corner too fast with too much throttle. Remarkably forgiving chassis. You could get odd extreme steering angles and you could bring it back. I don’t remember brakes being that effective - but that’s about normal for anything in the 1960s. I cannot get a 1965 Mustang to stop today with modern pads but you did not need brakes on the Cortina whereas you do on the Mustang (or Galaxy if we are thinking period competitors - oh hell you needed brakes on the Galaxys!). For its period it was incredibly successful - bridging the mini and the Galaxy. The mini needed more power for its chassis. The Galaxy had power - oh Lordy did it ever - but it handled worse than a bag of potatoes and brakes were just words on a spec page. it was fragile in period. Designed to last the length of a sprint race in the UK. Most of this has been engineered out now in historic race cars although you still see the odd road car come down with the usual reliability afflictions. The Cortina’s success came from its ability to bridge its competitor’s weaknesses and be a better allrounder. Drive one if you get the chance. It was a super car of its age.

The Prisoner colors are just such a classic good look. My suggestion is you drive it as it is. Then put some 13 inch wheels with good performance rubber on it and drive it again to experience the improvement from such a massive reduction in unsprung weight. The 'wagon wheels' at 16 inches always made a Caterham look ungainly to my eyes and they were very heavy.

Not enough is made of this important point. Always flush new builds to remove production residues and always flush between different types of coolants.

I always found the duties were selectively enforced in the past. Sometimes I would get hit with a bill and sometimes not. Also Fedex, UPS and DHL would be similar in their inconsistency. Mixed minds about it. From a policy point of view, this exemption actually should be removed as it does distort the US economy. However, personally I like it when I do small orders of parts. Large parts orders like the half a shipping container I brought in last year will always get duties applied.

I see a couple of BAC Monos regularly on UK track days. Same Duratec as a Caterham but a more purist open wheeler design. Not sure what gearbox they use? Its sequential. Incredibly accomplished cars. Function over Form. They can be highly strung - they seem to have a lot of gremlins.

I had the same questions as you a few weeks back. I have seen a few of these for sale in the US lately. Asking in the $300s used. They come in as rollers - so kits.

@Anaximander Bob - Do you know from your Stalker experience?

The more I have thought about this with my early Range Rover experiences, the more I realize that you need pre-OBDII as this was the inflection point when electronics in cars started going nuts. It also is the point where emission control laws in the Soviet states started to conflict with the objective of keeping cars on the road long term. Those emission laws were designed to remove old auto stock from the roads.

Have not heard that expression before. Usually only used with wayward sons?
