  1. Simple Sevens has SB2138 as with another owner, not William Hughes. It was last for sale in April 2018 according to that website. There is a typo that refers to 2178 but the rest of the page refers to 2138. SimpleSevens: Jim Gordon's Lotus Seven I would echo everyone else as say it feels like your classic scam. In addition to the for sale listings and weekly summary (I will restart in early Jan), have a look at the for sale listings on Simple Sevens. SimpleSevens: Lotus Seven Related Items for Sale John (he is on USA7s but I have forgotten his ID here) does a great effort to support the integrity of your original Lotus 7s and knows a lot about the cars located in the USA. If you are looking for one, his site is a very useful resource.
  2. Apologies for going off topic but Is that a Fiat 124 Spider in the background?
  3. Yes thats exactly why I was experimenting with the Bose earbuds on track. My helmet has ear cups intended to provide sound insulation. I thought the mic may just work in that environment. Will try again when weather is better in a few months.
  4. I remember Dad having one of those when I was growing up. His died of rust decades ago. Absolutely bullet proof - nothing ever fails. Incredibly well engineered. That is a wonderful classic and I love that you are using it on a regular basis.
  5. Never knew that - hysterical. The V8 in my previous X5 was a great engine but gee it ate oil. Usually added a quart every 1000 miles. Same rate from brand new to when I handed it off. I used to keep spare oil in the car all the time. No issues at all so far with the X7 and I am 8000 miles in.
  6. I have tried a number by borrowing from the various instructors at NJMP - Stilo, Sena, Peltor, and Cardo. There was another brand I tried but cannot recall it. None of them worked as the mic picked up all the wind noise. No issues in closed cars though - all were good there. I am intrigued by skydiving mics - will be researching them.
  7. I have a major soft spot for Land Rover products, having had an 1983 110 and a 1982 Range Rover in my distant past. @Bruce K I liked the new 110 when I drove it. Felt good. Thought some of the materials and finish were a bit cheap. Price was outrageous. Similar spec to my X7 was going to be $35K MORE than the X7. Had some residual concerns around quality which I never got comfortable with. In the end I went elsewhere - price the main reason - as I thought the value was not there despite the car. But I have always admired the Discovery/LR3. I know the body on frame construction makes them heavy, which is why they are not the most economical but the comfort and ride are excellent and their capabilities as a tow car are excellent. Food for thought - the X7 does 25mpg around town compared with the LR3 at 20mpg. Similar weight but the engine technology has moved on.
  8. I think we all need a daily driver to be practical. Something that carries loads, deals with pothole ravaged roads, and gives pause to some badly driven Mommy-mobile. I changed mine over this year. I have had 10 years of BMW X5s, my last being the 2019 X5 40i with the brilliant 4.4L supercharged V8. It made the portly SUV a serious weapon around town. Need to get across an intersection - boom - done. However, this year as the X5 came off lease, I went for the X7 as it has a better towing capacity and takes a full complement of tires in the back. Somewhat sadly its the Inline-6 model, instead of the V8 in my previous X5. But for all that I am not missing the V8. The X7 is nicely cushy on the bad roads on my commute to and from Newark Airport and will protect me from the suicide e-bike delivery guys in downtown. The improved refinement from 3 years of work by BMW is really noticeable. It also works well as a pit vehicle doing shuttle runs from garage for bits and pieces. Fortunately the grille is not like the BMW M4 which looks like I dipped my ass in ink and backed up onto the front of the car. Someone might ask, why two blue cars. Because there are so few options. BMW has white, black, silver, charcoal, titanium, moon shadow. and every variety of silver and gray under the sun. But it also has one blue so that was my only possible choice. The seats are actually a dark espresso but the iPhone decided to render them as baby poo brown.

  10. I have a new set mounted on my UK "dry" track day wheels - first day looks like March 13 next year at Silverstone. The other Caterham guys looked after by TFL all rave about how good they are. They prefer them over slicks. I will see when I get to try them for myself.
  11. I have just looked up photos I have of other S1's and they all have a join/weld/something in that location on both sides. Looks unusual enough I would be asking for a clearer pic/explanation.

  13. I have all of them to be honest - use them on flights to cut down on the noise. The latest is the Quiet Comfort II ear buds. The catch is that you only get 5-6 hours of battery life before you have to recharge. Given I just got off 17.5 hour flight that was an issue. Should be fine battery length for seven driving though.
  14. Time to share another project car. 1982 Ferrari 400i. Yes it has a V12 with 5 speed gearbox. I think of these as Daytona/365GTB experience for 10% of the cost. Found one on Bringatrailer which was being beaten up by the usual uninformed peanut gallery. They were asserting it needed a valve job (head off) and had been in an accident (because it had a color change), etc. (not true). History was not known plus incomplete service records. Clearly some deferred maintenance which I could deal with. Peanut gallery were hung up on mileage at 120,000 miles. It even was featured on Jalopnik as the world's worst Ferrari: Treat Yourself To The Best Version Of The Worst Ferrari (jalopnik.com) So I bought it fairly well. I then got a renegotiated price as the alternator conveniently failed before transport and they are not cheap via Ferrari (but are cheap if you source the same one as a GM part via Napa...). History is now fulled defined and documented. I am good at research so it just took time. I know all the owners since new. I have all service history paperwork since new. It had no accidents. The color change from Blue Sera to Rossa was done by the original dealer at the request of the first owner buying. Door card has been pulled off to verify the original color inside. Interior is all original - just needed a very good clean plus some electrical work on a few dash switches. Door locks and handles were messed up - replacement is Fiat 130 part. The true mileage is 71,000 miles. One trick to these cars is that they were never intended for this market. So they were bought in Italy and imported as one-offs. To Federalize they just slapped a MPH/mile stick on the dials and did nothing else. The odometer clicks over on km but the label says miles. The red exterior does no favors to the styling. The styling on these cars only work - and work well - in dark colors as the crease lines are shown best. I have plans to take it back to its original navy blue color. The photo shows it as looking somewhat gawky and ungainly - its not that way in real life. Engine/drive train are all in good order. The trick with these gearboxes is never stress them when cold, particularly 2nd gear. Always wait for them to warm up fully. If you do need to drive when not up to temp then low revs, nice slow changes and skip 2nd gear (i.e. go 1st to 3rd). The plastic bits on the fuel injection needed replacing - that was the worst job. Plus it has pop up headlights I have another similar era V12 engine in a Lamborghini Espada and the experience is very different between the two. The Ferrari is sewing machine smooth. Quite precise and "finger tippy" to drive. More of a city car than intercontinental GT car. The 400 is an injection era car and it does miss out on the earlier model's weber intake noise. But its smooth and refined in traffic. Far quieter than the Espada. I let @S1Steve loose in it once - what were your impressions Steve? Interior is the one from the 365GTB from the early 1970s. All lovely detail touches that were lost in the move to plastic in the 1980s. Currently off the road while I wait for a radiator after I lunched it while doing a full bore acceleration run to prove it was "now reliable" (famous last words). Covid has messed up Italian supply chains sadly. Where is @Bruce K - time for you to share a car.
  15. Is that the Buick 3.8L V6 unit you are referring to? Hows the frame strength? These were reputedly a bit of a wet noodle for strength but I have never seen one in person close up.
  16. I have tried it it with the Bose headphones - worked fine blocking out the wind noise. I have been trialing the new in ear Bose headphones under my helmet on track and liking the result. The killer for the intercom I found was the wind noise on the mic above 50mph. I some times instructed on track and I could never get the intercom to work there above a certain speed - and it was inside a closed helmet. Never went much further. One thing to be mindful of is that not all cops like seeing you driving on the road with headphones on. Check your driving regulations. Its banned in my home state. Didn't stop me trying it though.
  17. Perceptive observations. It was similar when I saw a Stalker gobble me up down a straight and I was in a 275hp Caterham! I would be curious about a cornering and braking comparison. Not all tracks allow you to hit 160mph so the lap time would be intriguing. I also would find that validates whether a car this expensive is worth the extra money for the performance gains. Doubt it. At some point you just cannot put power down (yes I know about my current build...don't remind me...)
  18. Still one of my favorite photos. However, you are only in the running for the longest flight in a Miata award. @Boxologist also did a similar leap in his Miata in rural eastern PA one day on the local Lotus group drive. Launched over a deep ditch, cleared through a hole in the shrubbery/hedge while airborne and landed in a freshly plowed muddy field. I think @11Budlite was there that day in his Birkin? He came around the corner to the sight of me sprinting back along the road to find Jon. We may never know the winner. However, I'd prefer to be deep in mud than s%$t and maybe that gives you the moral victory! Thanks for sharing the photos of the Corvette - you have not aged in the 12 years since you last educated me on how to drive a CO canyon!
  19. I don't store my car at home anymore. Its just not possible to drive a Caterham around the NYC area. Road quality is horrific and the drivers just too aggressive/too stupid. So I keep it at the weekender. I don't take it out in winter - not much fun in the cold. Its street tires are ZZS plus I use those as the wet tire for track days. My UK 420R also has ZZS for wet/cold days on track or backroad driving. I have driven Spa-Francorchamps in snow/ice/rain days on ZZS and survived perfectly well. I will do trackdays in winter in the UK - its a little warmer than my US climate. I find the ZZS a perfectly good tire for a Caterham all conditions. But that does not stop the need for the driver to have some common sense with the throttle usage. I find I can get a ZZS up to 110-115mph before I feel aquaplaning on track in heavy rain whereas the ZZR is in the 90-100mph area. Hoosier slicks..40mph...
  20. I have used ZZS on track in snow. Yes they lose grip in cold weather. All performance rubber does. Sensitivity with throttle becomes key. Se7ens can be tricky to drive in the rain, snow and cold temps as you want a bit of weight to create some heat in the tires and the one thing a se7en does not have is weight. So expect kitten in wet bathtub experience in cold weather - front and back end can step out more readily than normal. But that means you can have more fun....

  22. To kick this off I will share my 1992 Range Rover. I used to own one of these decades ago but it was an earlier version with the 3.5 V8 with carbs and 4 speed gearbox. It was brilliant and defined what an SUV could be. Fairly slow by today's standards it had amazing ride, incredible suspension and was very comfortable. The glasshouse on these is huge so the interior is airy and light. Compared with the somewhat agricultural alternatives on the market at the time (Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol, full-size pickups, Suburban/Tahoe, etc) this was a generation ahead. To re-kindle my past car, I picked up a Spanish market 1992 Range Rover Classic. 2 doors. 5 speed manual. 3.5L V8 with injection. This was the last iteration of the classic body shell with a better engine and drivetrain combination. It was imported as "fully restored" but that term in Spanish translates into American as "basket case." It did not run properly. Clutch was dead. Interior had been trashed. Paint was abysmal on the hood but was surprising good elsewhere. Plus the wiring had been done by ferrets. To get it to the next level, it was delivered to Congleton in upstate Vermont. This is a driver quality refurbishment - not concours. The look we are going for is a sort-of Range Rover CSK resto mod look - article attached to this post to give you an idea. So it will have the traditional Marine Blue Land Rover color. Ro-style wheels in silver with the matt black on the wheel 'scallops'. Will go for LED headlights as the standard look ones are very dim. Some sympathetic rust removal - all Range Rovers rust. If they don't have it then they are lying! New clutch and a lot of engine work. Install an aftermarket air con. New suspension - it drives nicely now. Brakes refurbed. It will end up capable of being used as a daily driver that is slightly more interesting than the usual types of SUVs. The paint needs to be fixed in the above photo. It is ok on all panels but the hood. Needs re-painting on the hood but the rest may be salvageable. Interior was a disaster as I got it. This was the "restored" look from Spain. This level of destruction is good as I wanted air con installed. The original Range Rover installation option was not available -parts were unobtainium and the wiring harness had been FUBARed. The photo below shows the scale of the original HVAC system lurking under the dash of one of these. So an aftermarket one has been installed with some compromises in tandem with the original HVAC installation. Probably the worst bit of this entire project. Interior is being prettied up. Some wood trim elements to give it the CSK feel over the standard acres of poo brown el cheapo plastic - standard for the era. Interior is being done in pale tan "pleather", it would have been vinyl in the day. Because I am notorious of marking up any pale colored leather seat with blue or black jeans, the seats will be chocolate leather that contrasts with the interior but will be durable with my usage. Work still going on but should wrap up sometime next year. Over to someone else to feature one of their cars. Range Rover CSK article.pdf
  23. Most of us have car interests beyond just our enthusiasm for se7ens. This thread is intended to showcase that and share with others what other interesting cars we have in our garages. Many people here have a variety of automotive wallet destroyers beyond their se7en and the diversity will be interesting to see. Some guidance for posting to this topic: 1. One post per car. 2. Give us an idea what gives you your enthusiasm for this car. 3. Definitely post some photos. 4. Can include currently owned cars, past cars or even your daily driver (unless it is a Toyota Camry as they are kitchen appliances and not cars as enthusiasts would understand them). 5. We are not looking for a long list of your past cars but instead a bit more detail around a car that you owned/still own that has meaning for you.
  24. Thank you for the kind invitation. This is the kind of invitation where you would turn up with a 6 pack and spend an enjoyable time chatting about cars on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Wish I was local to do that! Is your driving season over now? When do you get to resume? Late April?
