If you havent bought the haltech I would go with the stock ECU unless you have ITB Nope there was never a Focus anywhere in the world with VCT on the Exh cam Tom
-
I would cut the very bottom off your PCV and take the plunger and spring out and put a 3/8 hose on the PCV install it in the breather cannister and run the hose up over the top raid hose then down to the ground or to a catch can/bottle this will be cheap and easy What are you using to tune this engine , stock ECU or after market ? There wasent a Focus that ever came with a VCT other then the SVT Focus and the SVT Focus VCT was on the Intake Cam where yours should have the VCT on the Exh Cam Tom

The CPS is 2 pieces one that bolts in from the inside and then the sensor that bolts in from the out side , you must be VERY carefull not to get a automatic inner CPS bracket or you will be pulling the trans again , you MUST use the inner bracket for the FlyWheel your using Focus Flywheel must use the Focus bracket , ZX2 flywheel must use the ZX2 bracket The black cannister is so the bottom end of the engine can breath and MUST be left in place , if you want a cleaner looking one a Co. called C-F-M sells a small billet one that looks good and does the same job , I would NOT run the hose back to the intake but to the ground or a catch can I will also have the VCT Elim for the SVT and ZX2 / Contour back in stock next week so you can install adj cam gears on both cams Tom

This is the timing tables from a stock Ford ECU , it was a base to show the timing on a stock Ford Zetec through a stock ECU That 2 deg is at 100% load so if you got to 100% load at 2500 which you cant do with out boost you wouldnt need much timing at that load and RPM Keep in mind the best way to do timing tables is load vs RPM not TPS vs rpm , Ford stock ECU (and most others) use load so your looking at load not tps , top row being 100% load bottom row being .100 load or idle Tom

One of the things that SUCKS about the emerald (like most standalones) is you dont have so you cant log a knock sensor I have probly tuned more Zetec engines then anyone on this site and I can tell you that no 2 Zetec engines are the same , with out a way to tell where your knock threshold is there is no way to get a perfect cruise/wot timing map A dyno will only do the WOT timing map and in most cases tuners try to tune the Zetec like a Mustang and get WAY to much timing into them This is a Ford ECU timing I just finished today as you can see the Zetec does not take a lot of timing loke most think they do , cruise this engine is in the .450-.700 load area at 2100-3500 rpm so only in the 14-17 deg range , the Emerald changes this some along with many other things but dont get sucked into the 30`s + timing because they wont like that much RPM 1000 - 6500 across / .100 to 1.000 top/bottom 6 6 6 2 11 12 12 17 16.5 21 23 7 7 7 3 12 14 14 14 17.5 22 24 8 8 9 5 15 14 15 16 19 23 25 8 8 8 7 9 16 17 15 20 18 22 14 8 7 15 10 14 19 16 18 19 23 19 12 11 16 16 13 19 18 20 21 26 35 19 17 19 19 18 20 20 23 25 28 36 30 30 36 36 36 36 36 36 36 36 38 38 38 38 38 38 38 38 38 38 38 As you can see some timing in the 3,5,7 range at 2500 and .600 - 1.000 load this more in the take off range , doesnt mean your Zetec will need the same thing but add timing in just a few places and drive , see if you can feel a diff worth the amout of timing you added if not take half back out and drive again , do this in small areas and slowly and you will be fine , fueling the same way , shoot for 14.7 cruise and part throttle and 12.8 WOT Tom

http://www.focus-power.com/view.php?showme=Home Where I am at in the world right now I dont have pictures of the 55 to put up That is my White 2000 Turbo Focus and the black SVT in the back ground is my 2002 SVT Turbocharged Focus 2000 ran a best of 10.95 @ 137 mph DOT Tires full interior and A/C , ATX 2002 SVT Black with stock engine and my turbo kit ran a best of 12.9 @ 113mph on DOT tires full interior with A/C 6 speed 55 Ran a best of 9.60 @ 154mph also DOT tires 33x21.5 ,4 link ATX All have hooking up issues because of the DOT tires but like driving to and from the track Tom
-
I think I would , It would look nice sitting between my Street 2000 Turbo Ford Focus 723HP and my Street 55 Chevy 1200HP 572 Inches LOL Tom
-
A fellow builder and love what you have done , I built a 723HP Ford Focus 2.0L Turbocharged ATX Trans street car, Ran very well at VIR and did the 1/4 in 10.95 @ 137MPH on DOT tires I have to agree just because it makes 700+ HP doesnt mean you have to use it some times I think people must think its on the throttle or off the throttle and there isnt anything in between , It sure is nice to have it and not need it then need it and not have it I would love to build a 300+HP 2.0 Zetec or Duratec in one of these cars but it would need to be for the right person as I understand that kind of power isnt for everyone Tom
-
YOU dont need that much TQ in a Caterham , that is all you had to say , that I can understand and respect , It isnt for everyone that I understand and respect For those that are curious about a Turbo and more TQ/HP I am interested in doing one Tom
-
Sense you want to be that way I`ll be your huckleberry , I dont arbitrarily comment about adding HP with turbos and I know the consequenses and that goes for lawn mowers the the blown Alci hydro engines I use to build , I know how to make TQ/HP and know the consequenses of doing so how the driver uses his right foot is a whole different discussion Who said anything about BIG HP those are your words , show me some one making 260-280 pound foot of TQ on 91 octane fuel with a Caterham Zetec or Duratec , turbos do far more then just add HP , I build for TQ thats what gets you dont the track , HP gets you to the track A Corvette after you telling me how well the Caterham out does a GT3 in the corners because you have a long track like VIR you give up the Caterham for a corvette or in your words find a "better suited" track for the Caterham?, why not add a little more TQ/HP to the Caterham and have the best of both worlds and run at the bigger tracks Then why pay 30,000.00 + for a Caterham to go to track days why not a 3,500.00 used KIA with a good set of tires , your not racing right ? Is it ego? Again you used big power , I never said anything about big power but 280-300 pound foot of TQ would be very nice compliment to the Caterham I think Tom
-
Thats how I feel and why I jumped into this thread , a track like VIR with the long straights (guessing sebring roebling is the same?)I see the Caterhams hold better than there own in the corners then get blistered on the straights to then see them get lapped in 3-5 laps , small tight track like MSR Houston would be a whole different game and you wouldnt need the power so back it down to adding only 40-60HP The nice thing about turbos and todays technology is you can have a boost controler and set it where you want it , with the wireless remote switch on the steering wheel you can go from 8psi to 15psi and back at the flick of you thumb or go fancy and different boost in different gears or different boost at different RPM or both LOL Tom
-
Do I really need to know what a car is "about" to make statements about adding a Turbo or more performance, I have drove several Caterhams/Berkins and I see where there appeal is and like I said with 180-190HP to the wheels with my built engines and I still feel they can handle more power I have asked Caterham/Berkin owners with 170-180 hp to the wheels if they felt the Caterham/Berkin would handle another 75-125 HP to the wheels and they have all said yes and with out loosing its handeling ability , you can even buy 250+ NA Caterham engines do they cause adverse effects in the way the car goes around the track ? Not that I have seen Turbo isnt for everyone and I know that, I mentioned Focus because thats what I do most ( Focus-Power ) and where I cut me teeth on the Zetec in 1999 Tom

I can do the tuning like I said , I would rather use the stock Ford ECU over anything out there and I can make a set of 96lb Injectors idle run and drive like the stock 19lb that came in the Zetec , AEM EMS cant touch what the stock ECU has to offer and to me the stock ECU is easier to tune with , the one part about the AEM EMS i do like is the tuning on the fly other then that ...no thanks if I get to choose , I tune all software tho I have tuned so many stock ECU Zetec engines on my dynojet dyno that I can remote tune (via Internet) NA or Boosted Zetec and never needs to go to a dyno , I tune SCCA winning Caterhams this way and have for a few years now This isnt the 60,70,80 or the 90 as you know turbos have come a long way in just the last 5 years , I am not a fan or most any factory turbocharged cars as they tend to have small quick spooling turbo on there cars and you get a hugh hit of power at x rpm vs a turbo that starts spooling at 2500 and hits full boost at say 3400 and making 280hp Superchargers in my opinion are a wast of time on a 2.0 engine , SC like the jrsc was a joke , Porweworks same thing on the Zetec engine total waste of time and money I am not some wanabee kid that thinks about one day having a turbo and going fast You can look around here http://www.focusfanatics.com my name there is the same as here , I have built my respect in the Focus community and would like to do the same here As for the duratec and not needing boost to get that kind of power your correct UNLESS you want to run 91 or 93 octane and keep your Caterham a daily driver then those 12-1 UK engines wont do you a lot of good on our crappy gas , Duratec with boost making 300hp you could run 87 even , try that on a UK 280-300hp Duratec engine I am NOT trying to sell anything or promote my buisness I am just responding to whats being said and giving my opinion , I am semiretired and typing this from my beach house in Progreso Yucatan Mexico , I do the tuning and building because I enjoy doing it more then anything. I charge people for what I do to keep everyone honest LOL Like I said I have always wanted to Turbo one of these cars and have said that to every person that owns a Caterham I would just find it interesting to do and build and feel the Caterham can handle 280 to 300HP with no problem Tom
-
Well stated , sanity has never kicked in for me , I learned a long time ago that just because you had a lot of HP you dont have to use it BUT you cant use it if it isnt there I feel HP is 1/3rd of the process It takes A good driver well set up car HP/TQ Tom
-
Please let me state I am not trying to argue with any one .. Yes I have driven a Caterham but never in competition , I love the cars I do not own one , I have built Zetec engine from stock to making much more power and seen what the drivers did with another 90HP and they loved it coming back and saying they wished they had another 40HP , this coming from my Caterham customers I love track driving but I cant drive a steak in a watermellon so me coming to run against some one wouldnt do much good and would prove nothing but he is faster in the corners and i am faster down the straights , why not make th Caterham faster in both , just because my Focus makes 723HP does not mean I have to use 723 HP A 300HP Caterham Zetec could run at 200 , 230 , 250 , 270 , 300HP use the HP/TQ as needed when needed for the track conditions , bigger track use the 270,300hp , smaller tighter track use the 200-230 hp a little common sense has to come into play here as well Are the na-sayers saying that a 180hp Caterham wouldnt handel the same making 200HP or 230 with a turbo on it ? Tom
-
SC on the Zetec make no TQ and its TQ your after I am really shocked at what I read here "MoPho Track days are not a race, so why do you need to blow by GT3's on the straight? What does that prove? Make them give you a point by in the corners, that is much more impressive Driver > hp/money " Lets all just go to the track in Kia`s then if power isnt needed and what fun is it to only be... fast in the corners ????? please tell me you dont believe this how is only being fast in the corners impressive and please tell me that you dont think those Caterhams could out run the GT2.GT3 if they had proper tires and were not scaired os scratching there cars on track day My 326HP 331TQ Turbocharged SVT Focus 3200lbs will pass GT2 , GT3 at VIR but I have no dreams that with a proper driver and good tires that I could come close to running with those cars in competition I have built 180-190 HP to the wheels Zetec and yes I know what thay can do , I will never understand people that say they dont need that much HP , nice thing about turbos is you can lower the boost if you dont need it , remote switch on my steering wheel drops mine from 24 to 16psi 500hp to 280 hp at the flick of my thumb Turbos that make 300HP can spool at 2800 rpm now add trip ball bearing to that and drop it to 2500rpm sence most dont go below 4000 on the track where is the lag I think 270-300HP would be a perfect compliment to the Caterhams ability to get around the track For those with the Duratecs turbo works even better on those and I am playing with getting things working so the 2.5 Duratec out of the Fusion will bolt into the Focus and the Caterham As you can tell I am passionate about the Zetec/Duratec and turbos , I dont mean to come across like a dick Tom
-
Like you said you have to know what your doing , If some one wanted to make 250HP (I only talk HP to the wheels) then I would NOT do piping , IC and turbo that would make 500HP , I would do a turbo that would be quick spooling and good to about 300HP and maxx out about 330hp It comes down to knowing what the customer wants and its the combination of things that work not just throwing parts/money at an engine Tom
-
I have built dozens upon dozens of Zetec turbocharged engines and turbo kits , I can tune the stock ECU with no issues and have built many Caterham Zetecs as well that run pritty good even some in SCCA I have an inhouse dynojet dyno and machine shop with the ability to build a custom turbo kit for the Caterham or anything that comes along I would like to do this on a Caterham with a stock Ford ECU as I think there better then any ECU out there for less then 2500.00 -3000.00 Any HP isnt an issue I have taken my Zetec Focus built engine to 723HP daily driver stock ECU and my SVT Focus all stock origonal engine to 326HP and 331TQ also stock ECU Lets do this ? aidanparte curious why you dont feel a turbo will suit Sevens well ? Tom
-
I am very interested in turbocharging a Zetec or Duratec Caterham , I have been looking for a customer to do this on for a few years Whoos looking ? Tom
-
What are your RPM goals , I have built and raced hundreds of the Zetec Engines and unless your going past 7400 a dry sump really isnt needed , C-F-M has some billet oil pump gears that help a little There are a lot of good drysumps out there as kits for the Zetec Tom
-
More hope for the next generation of Sevens
1turbofocus replied to JohnK's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I feel the 2.3 Duratec is a very good choise for the Caterham , they make very good TQ , all Alum and many parts to upgrade them with Tom -
I am glad I could help , With the checking I have done I have yet to find a Ford ECU in a Caterham with any Ford Engine that had any tune changes in it All of them were knocking like crazy (knock sensor pulling timing) and running slightly lean which I would expect with the better flowing header and Exh A big problem is the knock sensor in a lot of the ZX2 / Contour ECU codes is turned off from the factors so there engines are not protected by the knock sensor add running lean to that and it isnt good Tom
-
The ECU has adaptive learning but not sure is that is what your talking about Closed loop is for idle and part throttle and open loop os for WOT or anything past 550 counts TPS , Air fuel for CL is set to 14.7 and OP is set for about 13.2 depending on your ECU code The ECU will not learn WOT OL fueling so when anything is changed (header , intake etc) you have to set your WOT fueling I am very good tuning the stock ECU remotely if you need any help , if you want to do your own tuning a SCT Pro Racer Package would be a good start My Dyno that I own is a Dynojet so I only talk HP/TQ at the wheels because in the end that the only place to me its important Tom
-
Ok , what kind of bridge do you have ? Not sure what point you were trying to make ? If you do some looking before insulting you will see my Engines , tuning is time proven , If you would like more information all you have to do is ask Tom
-
If you have the ZX2 head with VCT the STG3 Exh cam will not work the VCT heads take a special ECH cam , the best thing to do is switch over to a Focus head it is a direct replacement and flows the same as the ZX2 The best ported head money can buy is the Ford Racing head , there are some other on ebay by s Company that claim better flow but have never been able to produce any better HP/TQ then the Ford Facing head You dont have to go to a ported head if it isnt in the budget just a stock Focus head works and will make the same power as the ZX2 head Surface it and go to 10.0 compression and gain an easy 8-10+HP depending on mods , you will have to run 93 all the time and a good tune but well worth the cost You fuel pump should be fine but I would look for a set of 30lb Inj , the Focus SVT has 30lb and the Focus sites (focusfanatics.com) have them for sale all the time at a good deal You wont see 200HP at the wheels , maybe you were talking flywheel Tom
