I have a few questions Are you running a o2 sensor and running closed loop at idle and part throttle ? Do you have a wideband air fuel gauge installed ? If so what is it reading ? Hands down the best plugs for the Zetec is Motorcraft SP463 gaped at .050 Tom

Is this street or track car ? If track car have you thought about the 2.5 fusion head ? Tom
-
Wow , 9.1 NA will have you WAY down on power , What do you want for them , I could use them do Turbo 2.0 and 2.3 Builds all the time Tom

To me easy and cheap way to set up the Cam clearances is DO NOT cut the valve tips when doing the Valve Job , When you cut the seats and the valve seats you raise the valve up twords the cam , this will make 90-95% of your clearances to tight , cut the valve stem as needed and use that to set clearances , you can also move the buckets around to help keep from buying more , Make sense ? Tom

I talked to a Crane Engineer today and he stated Crane no longer makes the Duratec Cams and hasnt in some time so the only way to get any is being lucky and finding some old stock on the shelf somewhere Tom

I have a couple buckets of these , let me know the size you need .000 ? not the part # thats to hard to read on some Tom
-
They do , I have been running them on my street (572 CU IN ) and dirt track engine for more then 20 years , springs changed about a 2 dozen times and no issues , My 720+ Hp Zetec Turbocharged had them on it for 7 years and sold the engine and he ran it another 4 years and sold it to some one else same Crower Tit retainers , I have built thousands of Tir Ret heads through my machine shop over the years and never an issue Alum Ret , short life span Tom
-
My apologizes , I said duratec but had Zetec on the Brains , Crower , Burton , Kent or Piper , Crane might have some left hard to say If you cant see the issue for the pitting with the Valve cover off and cam out checking the rest of the engine wouldnt show anything , problem would be in the top where the cam is Tom

Your Temp sensor should be in the thermostat housing right where the thermostat housing and head Tom
-
Zetec under race conditions have high oil temps in comparison to previous year engine and oil temps were use to , Cooling your oil for more oil psi isnt the solution and I doubt it would add and higher oil psi , The engines I build the Customers tape off the oil temp gauge because it scares them to death but the engines run for 2-3 years before a refresh As a rule of thumb you want 10psi for every 1000 rpm , I recommend Mobile 20-50 full Syn Tom
-
Im guessing this is a Duratec ? I would look into the Crower STG3 cams or the Comp Cams stg 3 , both are great cams , great for racing and good for street , I have a 2.0 Duratec , 11.1 , Stock plastic intake manifold and Focus stock TB making over 200HP to the wheels in a Focus , Would also recommend Adj cam gears and a little dyno time Valve seats , Valve wont cause your worn lobe issue , things that will would be , Valve springs binding , Improper Cam adjustments , Bad Cam grind , Pitting from rust Tom
-
New Spk Plugs wouldnt hurt , I would only use the Motorcraft SP463 Plugs , gap them to .050 and make sure you have a 180 deg thermostat A wideband air fuel gauge in my opinion would be a must have if racing it and look for about 12.8 A/F anything over 13.2 A/F and let off the throttle Tom

The PSI Relief valve is in the oil pump on the front of the engine , I also run 20/50 Mobile Syn in all my engines street or track ,I would take a look at the filter , cut it open , I would check cam caps and make sure one isnt loose , rule of thumb is 10psi oil psi per 1000 rpm I would also confirm your oil gauge is correct Tom

That isnt the case with any of the Focus Engines Tom

Ongoing electrical problem - anyone want a challenge! ;-)

Try running your AF gauge ground out to the Batt or block , eliminating it grounding to the chassis anywhere , might not help but very easy to test , If that doesnt help move the + side also to the Batt as well which would eliminate the AF gauge going through anything but the Batt , if it helps let me know and we can try a few things connecting it back to different locations Tom -
Get a old 6 cyl Chevy pushrod and a set of dial indicators and do it old school , I never trust those pins I have seen a few thousands off in the cranks alone Tom

If people would stop buying Caterhams that use the “EFI_EUROPE” / ECU Model “Euro_8” or any locked ECU/PCM either the builders would stop using that ECU/PCM or EFI_Europe would stop locking them For the people running MAF , HANDS DOWN the best ECU is the Ford ECU that your year engine came with if Zetec , SVT , Duratec , If you run a MAP sensor what I do is get the EURO Ford Focus ECU that runs MAP and I change them over , Im not a big fan of the MBE either Stock Focus ECU has more speed and way better tuning / datalogging abilities then any Standalone I have ever used short of some of the $3000.00 + ECU Many people worry about the PATS Security on the Focus ECU but the Focus Mexico ECU/PCM does have PATS turned on and no chips in the Keys Tom

Is the wire +/- with key on or key off ? I would get it running right then test and make sure the Alt is doing its job and dash voltage light doing its job and if they are tape it off and tuck it away Hard starting is a tuning issue Tom

If the Zetec or SVT guys have a stock Ford ECU I can help the hard start and make the engines safer and make better performance The Focus , ZX2 , Contour , SVT use a system with a Fuel Pump Driver Module and if this isnt used and the FP are hard wired to the switch then it creates issues , Mostly cranking issues You can rig a switch to the FP where you crank then flip the switch and it works pretty good that way , its closer to how the stock ECU is set up which turns the fuel psi off after 1.5 to 3 Sec after key is turned on till it sees 400-450 RPM then FP turns back on If your running a standalone there is setting in there to correct this with crank time , IAT ,ECT etc As well as the list above needs to be correct , I feel a wideband air fuel gauge in the Caterhams is a must but there rarely added , this would help a lot with issues like this Tom
-
There is a lot of standalone ECU out there these days some good , some bad , some you can datalog and some you cant , To me a ECU that cannot be datalogged is worthless and who ever bought it and installed it should be ashamed , if you cannot log you cant tell if your engine is safe or making the best performance it can One , A one Tune fit all mentality is moronic in this day and time What I would look for is ease of use for Tuning , any company that wont allow you a free download of the Tuning software and datalogging stay away from , I would look for a ECU that has the ability to adjust and datalog the knock sensor , In my opinion this is a must but most dont have Call the company , see how easy they are to get by phone and email as well , if you cant reach them easy and having an issue what good is it Do this and it will narrow down the list quickly Tom
-
NC isnt much easier , they also test OBDII but not sure about what year it has to be When you say " have the codes removed from the ECU " This is easy , does it still have to pass the " Readiness " code test through the OBDII port or does it just have to have NO codes showing when plugged into the OBDII port ? This is very important because it means 2 different things Find this out from an inspection place and we can go from there Tom

If you have the stock SVT ECU I would recommend getting the SCT XCAL4 Flasher I sell and my Custom Tune , With the Flasher and logging I can help track down any issues with the sensors , see what there reading and either Tune any issues or help you track down issue You get the XCAL4 , Full Custom Tune , Free Tune updates as you add more NA mods , shipped for 462.00 , there are not many people that know the SVT engine and ECU/PCM like I do There is a log of scanners out there that dont read the SVT Black Oak ECU/PCM properly Tom
-
Adding a MIL/CEL wouldnt be that hard to do and wouldnt require it to be a special light , simply get a pinout of the wiring , find what pin the MIL is and connect a wire and run it to a small light and ground it , done As for the codes you do have I can turn those with my custom tune and greatly improve the Performance of your SVT engine Tom

Whats your WOT Air Fuel after 3500 ? Whats you timing look like after 2500 ? Pictures of under the bonnet ? Porting doesnt do much at all , the Ford Racing head was the best one out there and they stopped making it , even then it was hard to get the HP vs the cost , Cams would be my next move and adj cam gears Tom
