To Montana or Not to Montana

Recommended Posts

So I'm in Pennsylvania and purchasing a car from NC. Has anyone had an issue with insurance or the state titling a car in Montana? Should I just go that route first before trying PA. My biggest thing is ease of registration and getting the car on the road ASAP. I'm not as concerned with other "advantages" of the Montana LLC approach.

All help appreciated.

I would suggest going to a local tag place and ask them about transferring the title. If they think they can just submit the title and register it in pa, then you might be home free. Once titled, you can take it to any State inspection site and since you'll probably do less than 5000 miles, apply for the emissions exception. I believe in Pa, now, to register a Specially constructed vehicle from new, you need to have it inspected in one of the designated "special state inspection" locations prior to titling. Insurance with Grundy or JC Taylor is fairly straight forward as agreed Value policies.

hi dan, I've just done a car last year from ill into pa, and just bought a seven from Arizona and am about to get it transferred into pa. if you are picking it up there you want to get a temp tag, giving you 30 days or more to be able to drive the car , even if you are trailering it.. if you live in pa you'll have to register it here so you need to have it inspected ( by a special inspection shop listed on the DOT web site if it is listed as special construction or kit car , etc , etc. ) .if it's regular title you'll be able to just do fast tag and regular state inspection . either way fast tag will have all the forms you need. special inspect is usually $150.00. I use BLAST FROM THE PAST in Pottstown pa. the list will show you who's close to you. for insurance I found infinity to be pretty good overall for both price and coverage (they gave me same coverage as my truck and mini clubman on vintage policy) there are one or two companies that won't restrict the number of miles you drive, but unless it's your daily driver how many miles do we really put on these cars ? be sure and bring a check to tag service to pay Harrisburg for taxes on purchase of car, if any tax was paid in montana you may be able to deduct from pa taxes, they want title, bill of sale , proof of insurance ,even a statement from seller if as in my case miles differs because a used speedo was installed. if you get special inspection you'll get paper work back in about two weeks and can get tag the same day. if you get temp tag you can drive car to inspection and use it till paperwork arrives. have a safe trip and post some pictures, bill c.

Grundy recently changed underwriting criteria and so will no longer insure out of state vehicles owned by LLC's with write ins of individual names for driver/user liability coverage (well you are sort of insured for property loss but you have big gaps in liability loss coverage that you don't want to risk). Your better bet is Hagerty or American Collectors which do allow this (not sure about JC Taylor). I prefer Hagerty as they have better insurance carriers behind their MGA program (Nationwide or OneBeacon)

You will also need to add the name of the LLC and list all your individual vehicles on your excess liability/umbrella policy to ensure the cross coverage.

I insure my Westfield with Grundy and when I spoke them them they were surprised to learn I lived in the state of Montana and didn't just register a car here! Once they found out I actually lived here all was good.

Has anyone used an out of state titling company to get a title? Would that be easier to "clean" the title then to register in Montana?

Ever since the "Titles Unlimited" vs California fiasco, most if not all states watch for such paperwork, and can in some case flag the title, and send the car to the impound until everything gets straightened out. Guilty until proven innocent in those cases. I do not suggest that route.

As for the PA title process, it's simple, easy, and spot on as posted above. While living there (I also used Blast from the Past), I went through the process with three Birkins, and over a dozen Cobra replicas without an issue.

Going to use blast from the past then and title in PA. You guys are great. Glad I paid for the membership.

I also recommend using "Commonwealth Auto Tag" on High Street in Pottstown, as I have them well trained when it comes to kit cars :D .

Dave and the Blast from the Past team were OUTSTANDING. I recommend anyone in PA use them. Good call Bill, Dave at BFTP also recommended Commonwealth Auto Tag. Thanks to them I was able to get out and about driving yesterday.
