I want new wheels

greetings . . . my Caterham has 5 of the 16" HPC wheels that were standard in the 90's, and I'd like something less modern . . . BUT i'm sick and tired of the Minilite look . . . does anyone have 5 wheels (13", 14" or 15") that are something different? Cosmics? Revolutions? Compomotive?

 

i need 4.25" (108mm) PCD.

I had some adapters made to use 4 x 100mm, 38mm offset wheels. 205/50-15 tires fit nicely under the front cycle fenders. Far more choices and less expensive than 4 x 4 1/4" wheels. I can swap back and forth with the wheels on my Miatas. They have been on the car for more than 25k miles with no problems.

Sorry, no drawing. I took the car and one of the Miata wheels and tire to a machine shop and between us we figured out how thick the adapters needed to be. The bolt circles were known and a few days and IIRC about $200 later I had the set.

Have you looked at the Apollo diamond cut wheel that Caterham supply?

Its a little different to the standard designs we always see and it fits a Caterham off the shelf without looking like the usual silver straight spoke designs that are all the rage.

Otherwise I like the Mike Barnaby range that can be built to suit a Caterham without needing hub adapters.

There are a number of stock wheel adapters available online, like these. I got mine on eBay at a cost of $90 shipped for four. They are the 4X4-1/4 to 4X100mm (Miata wheels), and are 1" thick. Pretty standard stuff and work great. I used to have a Spec Miata race car and had some extra wheels so it was the easiest way to maximize my dollars. I use Enkei 15" wheels and mounted some Toyo T1R radials 195-60R15 (I think). The wheels came from Goodwin Racing at a cost of around $90 each and are reasonably light. When I'm on the track, these wheels come off and the stock spun aluminum 13" wheels, 6.5" front, 8.5" rear, are mounted with Hoosiers. The Caterham wheels are the lightest wheels I ever found.

 

For guys looking for cheap race wheels, Aero wheels from Summit Racing are available in 13" with a 4X4.25" bolt pattern and cost around $65 to $75 each. Bassett also makes wheels in these sizes. width is available all the way up to 10" with different back spacing.

Hey everyone, good info. I like this idea of using the adapters as well. Wondering about the offset on a 15" wheel for a Caterham SV? Some of them have wider rear wheels which I think would be a good look. Currently they're all the same width, the 16" "Super Seven" 5 spokes and could definitely improve the look with some new ones.
